  1. Gosh there are a lot of them in my area! Here's one: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...99-d04664b3d01a Here's another: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...d8-f0c293082ecd
  2. I'm sorry as I'm sure this has been covered but I can't search for 3 letter words and can't find it in the FAQ's stickied. Simple question though, what's an E.G.G.?
  3. I finally bought something, and it arrived today! Wooohoooo! In time for Father's Day at least. I never said I was fast. I bought a Garmin etrex VistaCx and it is great so far. Of course, I haven't actually *done* anything with it besides turn it on and put in my house and walk to the road and follow the path back to my house (maybe .5 mile) but that was a pleasure. I'm manual reading and seeing what I can do now, and am very happy to have finally made a decision and purchased something, and I think I'm going to be very happy with my choice. Thanks all for the detailed pros and cons, you were all very helpful.
  4. I still haven't bought anything! It has been raining a lot, which really dampened my desire to get out, but I intend to make a decision in the very near future. I do appreciate all the input, and I'll end the suspense when I actually purchase something!
  5. 134, rural WV, 25504. There are surprisingly quite a few, and if I expand the search to 100 miles there are nearly 400.
  6. You see the problem I'm having??? Too many choices, and everyone has different reasons for loving the one they love.
  7. I saw the nuvi205 for $189 sale, almost walked out with it but came home to do more research and reading. Hubby already made one hasty purchase which is not working out for me at ALL, and so I'm going to buy myself a new GPS for mother's day. The one that hubby bought is great for driving directions, so the one I will purchase doesn't necessarily need to be strong in that department. I do live in a mountainous region with a lot of tree covered caches, so that is an important consideration. I would like it to be simple to get started, with the option to add on things as I become more familiar with the world of geocaching. However, the starting simplicity is more important than the ability to do more because I have spent so much time messing with this one that hubby bought and I am so beyond frustrated - I just want to GO already! I have been reading and reading and reading but there is sooooo much information here. Someone give me a clue, and I apologize in advance because I know this has been done but I am sucking with the search function apparently.
  8. No splashy, I can't see any of the waypoints I've added, but the preloaded POIs are still fine. Everything looks fine in POIedit. Obviously I've done something or hubby has done something but now even the 7elevens won't show. I didn't update the 7elevens, as I renamed my POIs "GeocachingPOI" so before this debacle I could still see an occasional 7eleven as well as my lovely POI icon. I had it working beautifully, and I am so frustrated because I don't know what happened! I had gotten accustomed to the lady's British accent telling me, "You are now entering a non fully coded area and may receive wrong driving instructions" which is what it says when you go off road. I'll play around with it a little longer as I won't be able to get to the caching again until next week anyway. Will let you know if I figure it out, in case anyone else is ever gullible enough to buy a no-name GPS from Hong Kong off of ebay!
  9. assuming you have the means to purchase another gpsr, why don't you just say to him something like "honey, i know you meant well, and i really appreciate it and all, but this gpsr is just too much trouble, i hope you understand. i do feel really badly about it, but let's just put it down as a lesson learned and move on. i love you". I've got to agree! I wasn't going to reply, because I couldn't help with the technical aspects of things, but I've been reading the thread thinking "Who buys a no name GPS off of ebay from Hong Kong?" I'm sure hubby meant well, but it really seems like its more trouble than it's worth at this point. I think a mother's day gift to yourself is a PERFECT idea! There are lots of GPSr that you can get for a really reasonable amount of money that are actually made for what you're trying to do. Geocaching is supposed to be fun, not a PITA! (I personally can recommend the DeLorme PN-20 Great reception, and paperless caching almost right out of the box. If you can make it through all the stuff you had to do to make yours 'work' however briefly, I'm confident you'll rock the PN-20. Really reasonably priced too (and there's even a good deal on them at JR.com now!) *edited because I can't spell * That'd be my hubby! He is the single most gullible person I know, which is both endearing and frustrating depending on the day. I think I may take your recommendation on the DeLorme and treat myself. It'll save him the trouble of buying me something and I'll get what I wanted in the first place.
  10. My name is Stella, and I'm pretty Super! Guess mine was one of those "self-explanatory" ones.
  11. Here's what I tried so far: Resending the file to the GPS system (the backup file I had on my desktop from POIedit) A soft reset on the GPS Moving things from one folder to another (and eventually back) (in the memory card of the GPS) Downloading a new csv file from that site linked above and trying it again like before from scratch Nothing! It just says No Search Results on the POS GPS that I am ready to throw in the river... The GPS just doesn't recognize the files anymore, all of a sudden? This thing has been so frustrating and I do truly truly wish hubby had let me make this purchase myself. Maybe I'll give this one to him and buy myself a mother's day present.
  12. So tempting to respond........ I have no idea though. I know, right? Poor hubby looks really, really bad in this thread.
  13. I hate that I'm back again, but here I am. I keep saying I'm going to the pawn shop "tomorrow" lol! Any idea why all of a sudden it just stopped working with the 7eleven file? Should I try again with a different file? I've been going along just fine and had all the local ones that I planned to get to in my system and now it just doesn't work. Hubby did have it for the weekend but he swears he didn't do anything other than input a hotel address and drive there.
  14. I had posted a question a couple of weeks ago about this same topic. I'm a n00b with only a few finds, and while I was fairly sure that the cache had been muggled (because it had been muggled before and there were remnants of stuff around, not to mention that it just *should* have been where I was looking) I went ahead and logged the DNF. Someone came after me and said they signed "remnants of the cache" and logged a find. A few days later, the cache owner confirmed that it had indeed been muggled again, and he had rehidden it in a slightly different location, so now I get to go try again! Bonus, my kids loved that spot, and I don't look like an idiot for "logging" something that wasn't there.
  15. I a newbie too, and my husband just commented the last time we went out that we really suck at this game. I go with my kids too, various combinations (they're 17, 13, 8, 5 and 2) and we've found 6 out of 9 attempted. We usually look until the kids get bored.
  16. I took 2 of my sons today to a cache near me, and the logs have it being muggled at least once and being found in the open in addition to the muggling. At any rate, I found the hole which matched the coordinates and the description, but it was empty. There were a couple of things lying around that may or may not have been part of the cache (army men, little stickers, etc.) but they weren't IN the hole and it was a ball park so they *could* have been random litter. At any rate, I logged it as "did not find" and said in my log that I thought it had been muggled, but being a newb and not really knowing what I'm looking for... I guess I won't know for sure until someone comes behind me and checks? Is logging it "did not find" what I should have done?
  17. ROFL... that's one of my favorite stealthy techniques... "aimlessly" poking at stuff while on a fake phone conversation... Doesnt work very well if you have to get down and look underneath things though! I suppose you could "drop" your GPS, unless you're on concrete in which case I don't recommend that.
  18. I am really (really) new to this as well, but in the weekly Groundspeak email newsletter this week it had a clip about "Caches along a route" which seems like it might be what you're looking for.
