  1. In older versions of iOS you could turn off location services (the GPS) but took this option away in iOS 5
  2. Are there any plans to add an option within the app to turn saved lists into PQs? As planning a caching trip is easy to do on the iPhone or iPad when I'm at bored at work (on call wrecker driver) using the app, but if I then want to add this list to my gpsr each cache has to be added individually with lots of clicks backwards and forwards between the app and & the website. Thanks Dan
  3. Hi there thanks for that, I came to that conclusion just after asking the question, I was just hoping there was an easier way, thanks anyway. Dan
  4. Hi all, last night I made a saved list on the iPhone app, is there a way to make this into a PQ so I can transfer it to my garmin GPS ? Dan
  5. Hi if you have a smartphone already the cheapest way is to get the geocaching app & use your phone, if not have a look on ebay for a Garmin Etrex (the yellow one) its a basic unit but are very reliable, Ive just had a look on ebay & theres loads on there if you can one for less than £30 youre doing ok, as you can buy a brand new unit @ www.handtec.co.uk for £46.99. Hope that helps Dan
  6. Just a thought how about return the etrex 10 spend a little extra & get the 20 instead, the colour maps make all the difference over monochome Dan
  7. Give the 10 a miss & go for the Etrex 20 a lot more features for not too much more money
  8. Both gps to go caching all day, smart phone app for I'm somewhere new are there any caches here.
  9. Why would you have a smart phone & not have it connected to data ? Surely no data turns it into a semi dumb phone.
  10. I think that's one of the down falls of the etrex10 and only having a basemap whereas the 20&30 can use osm or paid maps.
  11. If you have a look around online a lot of sites still have the etrexH or try going second hand on ebay.
  12. Hi all just a thought for this thread as its getting a few pages long now and difficult to find who needs a mentor and who is offering to be one. Could we start a list of cacher's willing to adopt a newbie which you copy and paste into your reply and simply add your username and location to thus keeping it up to date & making it easy for a newbie to find someone near them ? So to start off: UKDAN - Hastings, East Sussex
  13. Hi there I had a problem recently with connecting etrex H to my mac, I gave up and bought an etrex 20 which has mini usb connector and the mac wouldnt see it, so I then bought a copy of windows xp so I could dual boot the mac but couldnt get boot camp to work. So I then tried xp in virtualisation through virtual box which worked but still couldnt see the etrex20 so bit the bullet & bought a cheap netbook running windows 7 starter and can now connect gps easily also has the benefit of being able to run gsak. Total cost for not programming by hand is £385, I did buy everything new so costs could be reduced by buying 2nd hand. Hope my experiences are of some help. So I would say once you buy mac ... you only go back once all else fails !!! Dan

  15. Hi there have just tried connecting the Etrex to a friends windows xp machine and both the Garmin and the sd memory showed up. So have decided to buy an xp disc & CoA on a well known auction site and dual boot the mac which will also give the added bonus of being able to run Gsak. Thanks for the responses everyone thread closed. Dan
  16. Ye the USB symbol is coming up on the Etrex but I'm not seeing it on the computer, like when I mount the memory card seperatly in the USB card reader it appears on the desktop as another drive. Also when using the Garmin web updater program it says connect device and also has a button to add gps, which you click & it comes up with no devices found. And Etrex is in mass storage mode. Dan
  17. Hi all I have just upgraded to an etrex20 from the good old yellow. The problem is my iMac (intel running snow leopard) doesn't see it when I connect it up with the USB cable. I've downloaded all the Garmin software from their site ( communicator plugin & web updater etc) but the computer still doesn't see it or the micro sd card, which I have mounted seperatly so as to put the TT maps and PQ's on. Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated. Dan
  18. Caching with the iPhone is very good due to the features of the app, but if you want to go for more than a few hours then a gps is essential due to battery life.
  19. Hi there personal favourite is Hi Tec boots my first pair lasted nearly 5 years of regular use (all the time when I wasn't at work) and only got new ones because the soles became smoother than a. After a bit of shopping around on the high street I paid £40 for the new pair in about June last year. Hope this helps Dan
  20. Hi all I want to start using gsak but have a mac at home, so Im looking out for a cheap laptop to use for caching & surfing the net when at work. So was wondering if anybody is running GSAK on a Windows CE net book ? thanks Dan
  21. thats where you are wrong my garmin took about 10 mins to lock on first time I switched it on, but that was cos it thought I was still in the UK, once it worked out it was looking for different satelites then it was fine, and the iphone had no problems at all. Dan
  22. hi me & wife went to nyc last year both have iphones, but this would also work with android phones or ipod touch, before we went we got a couple of pay as you go sim cards and put those into our phones so we wouldnt get charged for roaming. then put the phones into airplane mode with wifi on. The handy thing about nyc is there is starbucks everywhere with free wifi so you can still use the geocaching app or do a pocket query, also right next to central park is an apple store with free wifi. Dan
  23. Just a thought but if you wanted to go for paperless caching on the cheap without changing you phone, you could try a used iPod touch with the GC app and the Garmin Etrex. Only downside you wouldn't be able to do a search unless you're near a wifi hotspot, but it worked for me when I went on holiday to the USA earlier this year.
