  1. My geocaching aesthetic involves having this thread pinned, after all my forum contributions I'm entitled to it
  2. I'm using a PN-40 with GSAK and Windows7 with no issues. Like Pax said, make sure you can get waypoint transfer working via TOPO8 (to make sure you have no other issues with communication) and then work on sorting out the GSAK issues.
  3. pocket queries, pocket queries, pocket queries + good karma points for supporting the site Been a premium member for 6 years and never regretted a day of it (and the donuts are great
  4. Standard sd card. Or you could use a micro with an adapter
  5. I would consider myself a former Magellan fan having owned a 315, a SporTrak and a Meridian Platinum unit (all of which are still in a desk drawer). I now cache with a Delorme PN-40 but I do exactly what you describe wanting to do with a car GPS with my Nuvi 200W. GASK and the NUVI POI loader macro is just what you need! Makes it easy as can be to get 1000s of caches for a road trip into the Nuvi. The 200 series are the cheapest but the macro works with all Nuvis
  6. I agree with scotthsi, the best way to carry a Nuvi 255W is in your car It's not really a "outdoors" GPS. That's not to say that in a pinch I've not hunted a cache or two with it when I didn't have my handheld with me. A used handheld from ebay (maybe $50-60) might be a good choice if money is tight right now. If you drop or get your Nuvi wet you are going to be without a GPS at all or be spending money to replace it, so spending a little now as "insurance" against that might not be a bad idea. As an alternative otter box or pelican box that that the Nuvi will fit in is about $25. That would protect from rain and drops but make using the touch screen and issue. Best wishes and good luck with finding the solution that is right for you.
  7. Good excuse , good excuse ! I have an iPhone, I view webpages and I think I'd use it. Here's hoping for some rain
  8. Really? So, the next time I'm out caching and I find a difficult, well camouflaged cache, and I'm feeling happy and proud of my accomplishment, if I should learn later that someone cheated by logging a find that they didn't actually find, my feeling of accomplishment will be lessened? That's odd. It's against the law to wear the Congressional Medal of Honor if you didn't earn it. Why? Does the idea of people wearing it who didn't earn it diminish the accomplishments of those who earned it? No - and yes. The act of valor that the individual winner committed can not be diminished. When you see someone wearing that medal, you know that he is someone who did something very special. One of a select few. Now if you could buy the Medal of Honor at Wal-Mart and everybody was wearing them, whenever you saw someone sporting the medal you'd probably think he bought it at Wal-Mart. You might even dismiss a honest to goodness hero CMOH winner as just another Wal Mart Medal of Honor "winner". In that respect when everybody has one and you can't tell the difference between a legit wearer of the medal and a phony it can diminish the meaning of the medal - not necessarily to the recipient, but to the general public. That's why it's illegal to manufacture them, or wear one if you didn't earn it. Not to compare the act of finding a geocache with that of winning the Medal of Honor, but say Bob Q. Cacher bags bags a 5/5 cache that only 2 out of 100 cachers were able to find. He can rightfully feel a sense of accomplishment and pride. Now if a bunch of frauds log finds on the cache it won't lessen Bob Q. Cacher's personal sense of accomplishment. You can't take that away from Bob. However it can diminish the community's perception of Bob's accomplishment because people will be wondering whether Bob is just another phony. Bob doesn't deserve that. As the 2004 and 2006 winner, I can vouch that Briansnat's claims of wins in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 are true (though I felt that I should have won in 2008 but the he unjustly influenced the vote, not that I'm bitter)
  9. I've learned you're better off bad mouthin' somebody's momma than their GPS but if you have the patience to wade into the flames, there is useful info to be had.
  10. Well discussed herein previously, as a search will reveal. A design solution to provide compliance to the IEC 529 IPX7 standard (waterproof). Any other questions? how many strands of fiber are intertwined in a shredded wheat biscuit? Frosted or plain? On topic, the IPX 7 is a good reason not to have standard USB connection. My PN-40 has been soaking wet more than once wheile kayaking/caching in the heavy Florida summer thunder showers. I've never been concerned about it getting wet but a couple times I've thought I might have to worry about how well it would handle a lighting strike.
  11. PC vs Mac Chevy vs Ford Linux vs Windows Delorme vs Garmin As with any of the products above a lot of the difference comes down to personal preference. I prefer PCs, Chevy's, Linux and Delorme. Does that mean Macs, Fords, Windows and Garmins aren't as good? No, it just mean that my choices meet my needs. Nothing more, nothing less. So don't let yourself get caught in the flamewars while making a choice. I have a PN-40. I think it's a great unit and have had no problems with it. I've cached with it in the blistering Florida sun, kayaked in the pouring Florida rain and everything in between. There is a bit of a learning curve to the Topo software but the plus side is that the map are included as part of the purchase price instead of an added cost after the GPSr purchase. The downside of the PN 40 is short battery life when using alkeline batteries and numerous users have reported lockups when batters are low (again, I personally have never had a problem with it) Upside is there is a great user base who are ready and willing to help. They are part of the reason I chose to buy a 40 (the aerial imagery is another []. Find some local cachers with the units you are interested in, go caching with them so you can get real world, hands-on experience with the units and then choose what works best for you. Good luck and happy caching
  12. Same GPSr we started with. Then bought a Sportrak, then a Meridian Platinum. Now cache with a Delorme PN-40. My computer desk drawer is now a Magellan GPS Museum or cemetary depending on how you look at it.
  13. I gotta agree with Harry that I don't feel a toy cap gun is inappropriate (maybe we both grew up in the same different era or maybe it's just my NRA leanings that make me say that). The only thing inappropriate we have ever found was a pack of "raincoats" in a cache that was near an apparent gay hookup spot in the Keys (according to the note in the logbook). It appears somebody got bored waiting for a "new friend" to show up and started poking around (no pun intended), stumbled upon the cache and felt compelled to leave something with their profanity laced log. Also found a knife in a cache but did not think it was inappropriate. The cache required a 3 mile hike (1 way) with a 1500 ft elevation change so believe me there was no danger of an innocent child accidentally finding this one
  14. Cool. Gonna post some images so we can see where you've been kayaking? I will I did a little urban kayaking on the Pottsburg Creek about 3 miles from my house. The Pottsburg runs through Jacksonville Florida but once you get a half mile or so from the boat ramp you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. I saw a small gator (3'-4'), an owl, egrets, herons, river otters, turtles, about a 2' gar and a red tail hawk. Not bad for an easy 4 mile round trip paddle in the city. Just did get my Ram Mount on the yak today. $8 for the 1" ball that screws to the deck. I love being able to unhhook the arm from my suction cup window mount and transfer it to the kayak. In Fla all we have is flat water so I'm not eskimo rolling it or nothing but I bet if I did the 40 would be right there when I came back up. Man that thing is solid.
  15. I've never had a problem with mine and have had it for 5 months now. Use it kayaking almost every other weekend, multiple times geocaching including Geowoodstock 7 and caching/vacation driving from Florida to Chicago. I'm not saying the unit has no problems for some people but it's just that people with problems are more likely to post than people who have no problems. When was the last time you saw anybody creat a topic that says "I own unit X and just wanted to see how many other people weren't having any problem either" I don't know how many units have seen sold or what the complaint rate is so it's hard to say if the no problem to problem ratio is 1:1, 5:1, 100:1 or 10,742:1 All I can say100% for sure is I use mine weekly and have had no issues.
  16. What do you mean the processor can't handle it? I have a 200w and routinely set the alert distance to .5 mile (2 miles for interstate routes) with no problems
  17. Also make sure the tip polarity is correct . The Tungsten E charger I have clearly says Palm on it an shows output as 5.5VDC 500mA. Polarity is center positive. You could use a voltmeter to check your power bricks and see which one is 5.5VDC center + or look for that info on them
  18. I hope you found the article useful, it's a little dated but like me it's old as dirt. I can't say enough good things about Cachemate and my Palm. I used both for 5 years of paperless caching until about 3 months ago when I bought a Delorme Pn-40 gps.
  19. Is the map on the device but just not displaying or is the map wiped out? Can you just reload the map? Di you maybe accidentally click the turn imagery off box in setup? Have you tried the always helpful Delorme forums?
  20. I love my PN-40. I'll be sure and drop by to say hello
  21. A Delorme Pn-20 might not be a bad choice for you. About $150 at buy.com ($139.99 + $7.48 shipping). Comes with Topo7 maps, so no extra expense in buying them. Or you could get a basic Garmin etrex for $124.00 + tax at Wal-Mart.
  22. Wear plenty of sun screen and enjoy your visit (and caching) in our great state
