  1. quote:Originally posted by Rubbertoe:How does MobiPocket look on that higher rez screen? I've been wondering if it is an incredible difference or not... between that, and hearing that a lot (read: most) of the PalmOS software doesn't support the higher resolution screen yet - I'm just not sure I'm ready to jump to Clie. Mobi has a high-res version specific to the CLIE. If you install MobiPocket from their installer, it'll ask you what kind of device you have. I've seen other software which has this feature. As for other software not supporting the high-res screen, so far, I've had no troubles. Sony has a control panel called "High Res Assist", which allows for older apps to work under the higher res screen. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  2. The Sony CLIE is the top of the line. Any CLIE model has twice the screen resolution as non-Sony models (320x320 vs. 160x160). The color screens are transreflective, which means you can view the screen in any light condition, something which TFT screens have a hard time doing. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  3. When I first read the subject line, I thought it had to do with a cache that didn't go over too well. You know, like "they disapproved of my recent behaviour". ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  4. They (PBS) often rerun these types of shows, sometimes ad nauseam. Search your local listings. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/longitude/ ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  5. I bet people who sign the logbook on both sides are people who use regular notebooks in such a manner. And the reverse - I sign only one side, because that's how I use a notebook. Anyways. My first hide went underwater recently, and everthing was soaked. I stood on the logbook to squeeze it out, and then stuck it in the oven. Since people only signed on one side, the pages didn't bleed too badly, and the logs are still readable. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  6. Just thought I'd mention that there was an interesting program on Nova last night (saturday oct 26) called "lost at sea - the search for longitude". It talked about some of the problems of navigation and how Harrison was able to solve the problem. Near the end of the show was a brief discussion of GPS systems. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him. 7. And I'll offer the flip-side: I prefer bank lawyer style pages. Often-times, I print out the cache page, and find that 'jazzing up' the page will cause things to happen to my printer. This is not a flame towards anyone, including AD. For me, it's the info, that's all that matters. It's just that if there were such a thing as a techno-Luddite, I would be one. I'm as plain-vanilla-out-of-the-box-primer-gray as you can get in techo-regards. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  8. "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" is probably closer to a letterbox, huh? All we know is that it is under the big W. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  9. I have an analog speedometer in my car, so it's hard to tell, but I noticed that it's +/- 1 mph, which is close enough for government work. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  10. There was another thread quite some time back, I think it was titled "what's in a name" or somesuch. In short, my name is from Tolkien. Azog is an Orc chieftian who took Moria and eventually ended up killing Thror (grandfather of Thorin, of the Hobbit). Azog branded his name on Thror's forehead, the icon of which is my avatar. Probably not an ideal role model, but I've been going by this name since like 1988 or thereabouts. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  11. I'm gonna agree with the Leprechauns here. Regardless of that, I usually sign the paper logbook with just my name and date, and sometimes the time of day. I carry a personal logbook, where I log the cache name, date, find status and possible trades. Here I also list anything of interest. I use this logbook to make my logs on the website, but it's not verbatim (since my personal logbook is a mass of stilted grammer like "stick in ground, red tape", but it'll jolt my memory when I do submit my log). ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  12. quote:Originally posted by GrouseTales:At one of my caches, about 75% of signatures in the log book do not appear on the GC dot com page. This is mostly due to a local resort sending people on a treasure hunt to find my cache without using a GPSR. That sounds like a neat story. Any elaboration possible? ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  13. I don't care either way. My take on the non-commericalism aspect is that you don't plant a cache which forces you to patronize a specific business (go to Wendy's on Route 46 in Parsippany, buy a #3, and talk to so-and-so about the secret phrase). Business cards (flyers, etc) can be ignored, and you don't need to interact with it to claim the cache. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.

  16. quote:Originally posted by Brown Dwarf:I've been happy with surplus decontamination kit containers. They are olive drab and about the size of a very large wallet -- room enough for a Rite-in-the-Rain pocket notebook and pencil. With the colour, they just about vanish with almost no cover. Any surplus site ought to carry them. I've hunted two caches which had these containers. I really liked them. What's a good source? Criminal's armysurplus doesn't seem to have them. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  17. quote:Originally posted by StayFloopy:I might add Everglades to the list but I think it would be the easiest of the lot, requiring only about 50 feet of watery crossing. Hmph, not when I went. I decided to try it the day after heavy rains. What was I to know? I was up to my knees for more than 50 feet. There's a lot of new construction in the area. If a seeker is willing to spend time finding the ideal parking, I suspect the approach is a lot easier now. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  18. I've logged several no-finds for level one difficulty. One was verified missing. One was a virt, but the hider reverified the coordinates and I found it later. And finally, one looks like it may be in a place where it shouldn't be, so I've written it off. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  19. Way too fast people! I found it almost immeadiately after I posted my message, which is why I tried to delete it. Whew! ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  20. ach, since we cannot delete messages, I am editing this.
  21. Get a firebox and a combo lock. Hide three caches where, each cache gives you one digit of the final cache's combo lock. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  22. quote:Originally posted by Olar:I'm convinced that had I been born 20 years later I would have strayed towards an IT career of some sort. Back in 1975 I bought a 64 and immediately taught myself Commodore basic and had a ball with it writing little programs. I should dig it out someday and see if I can remember how to boot it up. Cheers and a tip of the hat to all IT people that make it all work. 64 didn't exist in 1975. Perhaps a PET? I had a PET-2001, and I think the date stamped inside was 1978, but it's been a long time. I got a VIC-20 in 1982, a few months after it was introduced, and when the C-64 came out a little while later, I was very envious. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  23. Personally I would just let it die. I've had some logs which may have reflected badly on me, and while it may have bothered me, I realize it's just not worth it. ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  24. I get an error when trying to click on the "Watch this cache" from the cache page, and the from Manage Watchlist from the My page: Error Type: ADODB.Recordset (0x800A0CC1) Item cannot be found in the collection corresponding to the requested name or ordinal. /my/watchlist.asp, line 93 Browser Type: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1) Page: GET /my/watchlist.asp ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
  25. So. Nature may have claimed one of my caches. As soon as I read the log, I suspected that it have been washed away. The seeker was standing in the river, but the river was about 50 feet away when I placed it! So much for my first cache hide What do I do with it now, until I can verify it's existance or demise? Do I leave it active, or temp. disable it? I might grab a pair of hip waders and see if I can get there. I've always wanted a pair of those anyways. I suspect the waters won't recede for quite some time... ---------- Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be also be like him.
