  1. I've heard/read that it also has to do with the grade of materials used in manufacturing, most important, the time-keeping aspects of the devices.

  2. I'm probably grasping at smoke.

I was born in Morristown NJ, which, as BrianSnat said above, is fairly important when it comes to the American Revolution.

After that, we moved to Wharton, which didn't have much to make it's claim to fame. It was a town along the Morris Canal, and also had some serious industry early on (the blast furnaces, for instance). Other than that, it's a tired old town.

When I moved out of Wharton, I moved to Basking Ridge, which seems to have more Colonial history than Morristown. I guess the troops encamped at Morristown, while the generals lounged in Basking Ridge. In 19th century warfare, and before, one doesn't become a high ranking official based on skills, but rather based on financial worth. Lord Stirling had a pretty big estate there, and George Washington even had some significant military success here.

After that, I moved to Millington, which is now part of Long Hill nee Passaic. Off the top of my head, the only thing of interest is that the MGM lion, Leo, is buried in Gillette, just down the road. That's the lion that roars at the beginning of every MGM movie. I considered making it a virtual, but the grave has been obliterated, and the property seems to have been recently purchased, after about 10 years of abandonment.

I drone. Didn't I say I was grasping at smoke?

  3. I'm not entirely a 'homebody', but I don't often get out of NJ, so I guess I'm a little biased.

However, many of food-shacks at the NJ shore always make me think they're fairly regional. Of course, one can get a gyro at any diner, but for some reason, it tastes so much better in 95 degree heat, feeling your sneakers adhere to the blacktop, and trying to eat it without making a mess.

Which leads to the next NJ shore delicacy, funnel cakes. Same, you can find them anywhere, but I think it's just the experience.

  4. This ain't exactly regional, but Harolds New York Style Deli is something you probably can't get in NY. You're talking about sandwiches a few posts above, and you've never lived until you've tried to eat an entire Harold's sandwich in one sitting.

  5. While it all sounds very suspicious, all I gotta say is verify. If he turns out to be a hoax, at the level he's hoaxing, the admins can easily deal with him (block him, and the purge his records from the databases).

But themagicians log says nothing about meeting another cacher? I don't want to impose my own standards on others, but I find that the majority of cachers will at least indicate a chance meeting of another cacher, and then some, since the cacher claims to have meet the owner...

In any event, it should be childs play to verify this particular situation.

  7. I smoke. I make no excuses. I'm trying to quit. Aren't we all? Actually, I'm really really trying, cause I want to marry someone who won't marry me if I am a smoker. Good enough reason for me!

I tend not to smoke while caching. It has more to do with the discomfort of smoking after making some sort of physical effort to arrive at the cache site.

In my car, I have this thing that looks like a travel coffee mug. You put the butt in it, and flip down the lid, and it smothers the cigarette. I don't flick them out the window, mainly because of fear of setting something on fire.

Na, since I don't have a PC at home (it took a suicial nose-dive), or even a net connection anymore (w/o a PC, why pay $40/mo for DSL?), if it were me, you'd be waiting anywhere from one to three days for me to approve icon_smile.gif

  9. I voted "other". I wonder if approving your own cache would be a conflict of interest?

In any event, a little perception might reveal the mystery approver, especially if people have received mails from him/her/it. People have a tendancy to NOT change their personalities while changing pseudonyms, and things like spelling and grammar habits (amongst others) will often drift across. Unless it's Boblog. Assuming that they also post here, so you can compare writing styles.

  11. There used to be a pull-down list, at the bottom of every page, which would jump directly to a selected forum. I found that nice, since I might be reading some threads in the General forum, and decide to suddenly go to the Northeast forum, without having to navigate a jumble of backward links.

  12. I am looking for a cacher to help me log the Where's in a name cache.

My name converts into 29° 32'. Since my name is only four characters, that gives a whole minute of longitude to log this cache!

Some quick looking finds me either at San Antonio Texas or near Chongquing China. Since the Texas forums did not elicit a reply, I figured to try for the more exotic one.

Some quick searching finds that there is a a cache close to those coordinates, but nobody logged it (and it's a virtual hidden by a traveller).

  13. I'm looking for someone to help me log the Where's in a name cache. If you're not familiar with this cache, check it out. It's kinda fun. In short, you convert your Geocaching.com username a coordinate, and then find a cacher at either the long. or lat. of that coordinate to take a pic of the GPS and (hopefully) an interesting site.

For me, it's even easier. My username converts into 29° 32, with the decimal part open for discussion.

Seems that for the North coordinate, San Antonio covers that area pretty nicely, and you should be able to get a real interesting area to choose.

Contact me via this site, thanks!

Other cachers go through that stage and then settle down into hobby mode. They stay around, not finding caches at the same rate but caching nonetheless. They have moved caching into perspective; they cache for fun, not compulsively.

Wow, I couldn't have put it any better. This is exactly what I happened to me, and what I did. I haven't been doing this for very long, so take my perspective as you will, but when I first started, I was unemployed and was able to average at least one cache per day ("average" is the key word - I didn't cache on Wednesday or Sundays). After I started to work, I tried to keep it up on the weekends. Now, I cache when time and situations allow.

  15. Well, I know I can't beat 100+ logs, but Hitec Retreat is very close to me, and has almost 60 logs. I find that to be neat.

By the way, you are not so very awesome. (not flame, just a cultural reference that I wonder how many people will understand)

  16. Well I am going to agree with Orange's statement completely, regarding being turned off by snow caching. Which may explain my most recent inactivity both on the forums and caching.

This is a shame. Hart's been hiding caches around Morristown, and I'm aching to get there, but each time I get set to go... Argh.

But I did find something to keep me occupied during the times where I just don't want to go out. This is an online game which existed long before UO or EverQuest (1996 was the commericial release). It disappeared for a few years, until a 3rd party purchased the assets. I played it for two years, and when I found out it was back...

  17. Now that I'm thinking about, I am reminded of another gross misunderstanding of how to use apostrophes - contractions. It really makes my flesh crawl when I see this particular error.

Where people will write "wan't" and "differen't", under the poor knowledge that "any word which ends with 'nt' must contain an apostrophe".

Do a google on "wan't", you may be suprised how many hits you'll get.
