  1. I loved the gnarly exposed roots of the tree at this cache
  2. You could try some of the military collector websites / forums: those people can be almost as obsessed about containers as, well, us. I picked up this big puppy for an island cache and only took a day or so to get my answer from a Collectors Forum:
  3. Dang! I was browsing the site for a few months before my GPS arrived and I signed up to log my first find. At #165780 I'm haven't got an elite 5-digit (or less) number, but it would have been nice to be below 150k
  4. Wow! And you survived being at the same event. I'm impressed at TK's restraint!
  5. Hi Sierra Tomb Raiders, Have a look at this thread in the NZ GPS forums (gps.org.nz). You might want to bump it to get an update as the Auckland community are quite active in cache placements :-) Cheers, G.
  6. Love these threads getting bumped and reminding me to post. While not as high as many, this one was still nerve-wracking for me!
  7. I look at the storage containers in supermarkets thinking "Hey, good cache box!"
  8. I suspect, along with the food, a pointy object (or two) was used to make it means it probably wouldn't get published.
  9. Gidday TeamPEZ, You'll find most of the Kiwis lurking in http://forums.gps.org.nz/index.php and there should be one or two more than willing to help. And Gen.Custer has been known to act as guide in the Rotorua area and is part of www.kiwicaching.org. Cheers, G.
  10. Hi Applewomyn, Hope the stay is enjoyable! There's a current thread here http://forums.gps.org.nz/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=4002 on caches around Queenstown that may be of interest, and a list of upcoming event caches around the country here http://forums.gps.org.nz/viewtopic.php?f=3...52&start=60, but I don't think any are planned for Q'town at present. Cheers G.
  11. I put one together when I first started caching to go along with my Sig. item (folding geocube). It's really showing it's age now but did get a few interesting conversations started about geocaching Caching Cube Screensaver (780kb) The saver shows the cube tumbling over the screen wiping from pic to pic - ones that were on the cube. Oh, and the cube itself...
  12. And you are encouraging people to play in electrical boxes why? So what happens when some kids looks for your next caches and thinks it is the same hide "technique" and dies from an electrical shock? Will you still think your container is so cool? Very clever, although I agree there is that danger of encouraging people to start searching live equipment. To make this one 'perfect' a very small geocacing logo, GC#, or even 'pnpur' added to the bottom corner - or anywhere discrete but visible - would be wise. Still keeps muggles at bay, needs a good look (but no touching) to confirm the container, and doesn't ruin the fun element.
  13. Probably from this bloke's Army Surplus store.
  14. Haven't done any for a while but my folding cubes end up taking close to 2 hours each although I tend to do a batch of them for each stage: cutting images one night, assembling cubes another, applying sticky labels yet another.
  15. My 14 & 18yr old "children" sometime still come with me - though normally only if the caches are a good size. I got them hooked on the unusual/strange treasures that could be found 3-4 years ago and they still get a kick out of finding odd things for trading. However, after dragging my 75 yr old Mother through some rather steep and bush-clad gullies, as well as a few thorny hunts she tends to decline the offers these days
  16. If you do a google search on digital camo there's a heap of info out there, but primarily it comes down to two basic forms: hide by blending in; and hide by breaking up a visually recognisable object by breaking the axis of symmetry. I've tried a few variations that work in different environments: black is always good for blending in!
  17. news clip on the night To put the event into some context, in the past week or so there have been at least two bomb threats phoned into the courthouse only 200 or so metres away so when someone (already jumpy) watched some 'dodgy' activity on a CCTV camera they called the police. Police thought this must be Strike 3 so acted with full caution. A local cacher who worked nearby spotted the activity, came out and talked everyone back down to planet Earth. I suspect the police took cache & contents away to at least have something in hand at the end of the day. A radio station followed up the next day with a very good short interview with Pivotal - the cacher who assisted in defusing the ...situation. [edit]And before there are any smart responses from those who listen to the clips, that's the way we pronounce it down here!
  18. Good discussion on NZ GPS forum. Here's the cache, GC13MV5. Luckily, a nearby cacher spotted the assembled police from his office, printed off the cache page, and dashed out to defuse the situation...so to speak. It worked!
  19. A friend's recent log. A body but not murder, just sad circumstances.
  20. So how are you actually joining ? My tracks actually have names not just "Active Log". That is the only difference i see. Why will my join not become selected after i highlight the tracks i want to join ? I had been Cntl-C copying each track segment 'Active Log nn1'; opening the new track, clicking on the <end> point then Cntl-V; close the new track, back to 'Active Log nn2'; and repeat. Now, shift-click all the track logs I want, and right-click to get the 'Join the selected tracks' option. Then rename the new track that was created.
  21. It's advertised as IPX7 on the Garmin site. If it doesn't meet that strict specification then they're guilty of false advertising, no matter what Garmin says you "shouldn't do"! Given the expected use of this unit, that's just dumb. The more I read about the problems the more it seems the Colorado is something Micro$oft would deliver, not Garmin!
  22. I spent a few hours joining up a large series of track stutters (walk in light bush, 60CS) last night. Then saw this thread, and checked the menu. When did that appear!!??!!
  23. UK Contour maps, but not of roads or auto-routing I believe.
  24. I spotted a post referring to NUVIs and how to get them to produce live tracking on a PC. I wonder if someone with a Colorado could see if the same trick works as apparently there's a lot of Nuvi DNA in the Colorado's makeup.
  25. I always take mine on the plane now and don't even ask now. My only hassle was one time, after a couple of brief discussions with one of the cabin crew, my GPS went to the flight deck for 15 minutes as the flight crew wanted to have a good look at it. I was left behind
