  1. GC.COM tape roll: Cool idea - I could really use that. Signal's head looks a bit too much like a refugee from a bubblebath cap for me.
  2. Nice to see others thinking along the same lines: I've also been pondering a laser cache, but primarily as a cache that could only be done in bad weather: fog/mist/drizzle. My biggest challenge is trying to find some mechanism, NOT obvious to muggles, that allows the cacher to point the laser over a distance of 50 - 500 (?) feet accurately to either a mirror or a cache hide and able to see the beam and/or destination. So far I've thought of plane tables or statues/monuments. Problems: avoid firing the laser where it could sweep at eye level; locating it where there is a predominance of cloud/mist/fog (tops of hills?); able to give clear-enough instructions that still maintain a challenge. Then again. any ideas on a cache that can *only* be done in bad weather? This empty cranium now open for filling!
  3. I read an article on Slashdot late 2003 that mentioned this thing called Geocaching. After a brief read I was busting to get out and try this sport. It sounded like a match made in heaven for someone who loves the outdoors as well as computing/gadgets. I trolled Ebay until I could get an eTrex unit with map display at a reasonable price, then had to wait ages for it to arrive by post. During the wait, I discovered the NZ Forums and kissed goodbye to many an hour reading the threads and following software links. Very helpful people there! The unit arrived and I was off hunting the nearest Dunedin cache. A lot of the Otago caches had been placed by Nemesis who seems to have a predeliction for prickles. In my mind it just added to the fun, but the other half and kids didn't quite get why Dad was so keen to charge off into the scrub with his latest techno-toy. Still, they enjoyed the "trading" part: finding something cool in each cache. Arguments ensued as to who's turn it was to select a treasure to trade. All adding to the fun. Phase two of a geocachers life has now hit and I'm now enjoying cache placing as much as finding! It's as much of a buzz reading other cachers' log entries on ones I've placed, as logging finds on caches I've found. And for those who wonder, "GSVNofixedabode" was a moon-sized starship (General Systems Vehicle) that wandered around the galaxy exploring - rather apt I thought [iain M. Banks, Culture novels]
  4. Hi Simon, If you're in Christchurch for a while there are PLENTY of caches to get to: quite a few of them being multis. Dunedin has a few - growing in number as we speak . One in the Queenstown area that I'd recommend is Tobin's Track. It's located in Arrowtown, a 15 - 20 minute drive from Queenstown and well worth a look (the town as well as the cache). Cheers, G.
