  1. Okay I will join the fun. I thought you were selling a GPS that was bitten by a dog. Good choice reporting the bite to the authorities. Too many people put their pets above other peoples safety and comfort and will not control them appropriatly. Enjoy the hunt and maybe keep some dog treats with you. Apparently a dog will not bite the hand that feeds it. (treats that is.) G
  2. Sorry to hear you lost an ammo can. It's always the good ones that disappear. How come the plastic raisin containers or coffee cans never go missing? Keep placing as we all appreciate the contribution. Take Care. We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children.
  3. Have not tried this yet but have heard he does a good job on topo's. http://www.ibycus.com/ibycustopo/#Detail
  4. Thank you everyone. I will give this a try tomorrow. G
  5. Hi There, I have been asked to see if it is possible to load multiple addresses on to a Nuvi unit in one upload. I of coarse do not have the abilities to program something like this. (or anything for that matter) I was wondering if there was a program that would use Excel, word etc to program way points using Name, address & Postal/Zip codes. Thanks in advance. G
  6. Craigslist is a great resource. I prefer to look for units with cables, manuals etc to minimize the chances they are stolen. http://chicago.craigslist.org/nwc/ele/1230756763.html
  7. As others have done I also have logged FTF's at night. One of the best times I ever had caching was when we were on Vancouver Island visiting the in-laws and I turned to my NefU about 11:00 pm and said "Wanna go cachin'". He was so excited to be out caching at night and all the issues we ran across (failing lights) it made it a great adventure.
  8. If you bought a Vista that connects through a serial port, it is a discontinued model - no longer top of the line. You know that you are replying to a 6+ year old post? Thank you for responding to a 6 year old post. Not only was the original rant and responses a HOOT, but it brought back memories of Freedom Fries and Freedom Toast which were the most bizarre response to a nations right to decide when to, or not to involve itself in the "war" of another nation. I have friends and relatives who have fought in the Canadian Armed Forces and a wife who has spent time in the Forces and none of them ever understood why the deep fried potato slices were punished and needed to enroll in the witness protection program.
  9. Found a cache that had one of those spring snakes that fly out when the top is opened. Scared the heck out of me and then I couldn't stop laughing. I watched the cache logs for weeks for the comments.
  10. One of the first caches we found was soaked and in a zip lock bag. Great spot but the kiddlets were quite disappointed by the soggy mess, I tried to contact the owner after logging a needs maintenance with no response. We watched the cache for a while and noted the disappointed logs so we decided to kidnap if not adopt the cache. Replaced the container, log book and swag and since have been rewarded with great logs from Noobie and first time cachers. We also keep a fully stocked cache repair kit to keep the joy alive when needed. Archiving would probably have been easier but I always seem to go in the hard way when going for a cache anyway.....
  11. I will triple the offer, $3. But is in Canadian so about $1.50 USD. What does 5:00 have to do with it?
  12. Our first caching trip we brought my a bunch of my in-laws (who all are now caching BTW) and when we found the cache we realized we did not have a name to sign so my 8 year old daughter said "Since we found it, we should be The Find Its." As most times with the girls; if it doesn't hurt anyone and it sounds fun we go with it. So we did. G
  13. Hi There, We use our 76CSX Primarily for caching but I have used for driving directions when out of town. My wife and I used to be avid ocean Kayakers and wanted a GPSr that we could use once the kiddlets get a little older and we start going out more often and farther out. It has great visibility and also FLOATS. If something is going to get dropped outdoors I usually choose the most expensive, needed item so this was a must for us. IMHO G
  14. We always love coming across an ammo can as the kiddlets know there is usually good swag to trade for. I have purchased dollar store lock & lock knock offs and they have leaked in a very short time. The original Starfrit Lock & Lock are the best of the plastic ware in my opinion I would stay away from peanut butter containers as no matter how well you clean them animals may still be attracted to them, and a squirrel or raccoon can destroy a cache quickly, nor do you want larger wild life being attracted. Have fun. G
  15. We got into it to have something to do with the kidletts outdoors that the whole family can and does enjoy. If the circumstances dictate, as when I am traveling on business, I will go caching as time allows but rarely trade. G
  16. I just want to say, a Big "thank you all, again" for your answers, your care and help. I have sold the GPS unit back to the store (less restock fee) and, it is my decision to leave the Geocaching to those who are better at than I. Messing with this thing for 15 days to no avail really took the wind out of my sails for this whole game. Again, you all were wonderful and many kuddos. Happy caching : Urorious, Md Players, Michigan Cacheman, Briansnat, dandabradford. happy geocaching to all !! You may want to pick up a good second hand Garmin unit with a high sensitivity receiver (since x-mas there seem to be more on the market) and try it again. We start using the wrong GPSr and were pretty frustrated but my addictive personality forced me to continue and we have discovered the fun beneath the aggravation. The hobby is not for everyone but is really a great way to get out side and meet some really nice (mostly) people. It is too bad you had such struggles in the beginning as I have heard some very positive things about Magellan, such as the display of the cache on the screen, and that they may be working on a software fix for direct downloads from Geocaching.com but a Magellan user would know more then I.
  17. A great day caching is all we can ever hope for. My wife also enjoys the walk and will also participate in the hunt most of the time, but thinks I may be a little addicted at times. When we first started it was a great way to get out for a hike with the kiddlets, and they loved it, now I find myself doing weird things at weird times. This morning hit a cache at 5:00am on the way back to work from dropping my father at the airport. Last week I was out night caching while on a business trip, it was -20C (-4F) and I could only stay out for a couple of hours at which point my new batteries died because of the cold. The next day it was only -14C (7F) and I managed to grab one more at the airport before my plane left. I really think it is great that you both have the time and weather to be able to cache all year and are enjoying the adventure aspect of the sport. Keep having a good time and be careful, I hear it can be addicting. G
  18. X2 and they can be found on EBay as a bundle for about $150. Came with City Nav 2009, a vehicle mount and sd card. Good stuff! X3 I actually bought the HCx second hand after buying a 76CSx for a smokin' can't pass it up deal and when my girls and I go out they use the Legend and it does a great job. E-bay, Craigs list and the GPS Sale forum are great places to keep your eyes on. Welcome to the clan of the addicted and "Happy Caching.."
  19. 5 Ammo cans 4 Shiny coins 3 log books 2 Garmin Oregons And a film canister in a tree?
  20. I was looking into buying a PN-20 that was for sale here in Canada and found out that not only do the DeLorme GPSr's not have Canadian maps available but they are not in the works. SO if you are from Canada or will cache in Canada stick with the Garmin. Too bad because I thought the DeLorme looked it would be a great unit. I will wait for them to come out with the Canadian features and then will seriously consider one. G
  21. Check this out. http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/spo/926335164.html Graham
  22. I have run across the same scenario in our area. One of the first caches that we found was a wet mess in a nice spot. I tried contacting the CO a couple of times and have not had a response. He had been a member for about a year and a half and has not logged on for over two years. Finally I replaced the cache with a new container and swagged it up. I put the cache on my watch list so I can keep an eye on it. It is right down the street from our house so no problem maintaining it, and think that every positive effort made is valuable to any endeavor. Just MHO
  23. Welcome! And an ammo can for your first....I love ammo cans. It is a fantastic activity for the whole family. Enjoy the hunt. G
