  1. Hey, I used that exact fish in one of my caches!! My cache was very similar to yours in that I used a PVC pipe capped on one end and then used a rubber plug with wing nut (I forget what it is called but I found it in the plumbing section) to allow it to be opened but remain water tight. What I did was take out the stuffing, placed the pipe inside his mouth (had to cut a hole in the mouth) and then used a metal bicycle chain as the "Fishing line" zip tied through the mouth of the fish and then attached to a tree to prevent the container from floating away in the current of the stream. Keep in mind that the PVC pipe will be buoyant causing your fish to float to the surface. I had to place some heavy chain (left over from the line) in the tail and then cut a slit in the tail of the fish to allow the air bubbles to escape allowing the fish to sink. I did some testing in a 5 gallon bucket before getting it just right. I had pretty good success with it although it eventually broke away from the chain. I need to make repairs to get it back up and running. Let me know how it goes!! Edit: Very nicely done! I might try using your technique for mounting the pipe for my next incarnation of this cache! Keep in mind that the screw off portion will probably not be waterproof and will eventually leak water. If an O-ring of some sort can be installed that might help things.
  2. Here is my favorite tree climbing cache. After several people logged a note or DNF because they didn't dare make the climb, I really enjoyed this log by two friends which this is their only find:
  3. I use Microsoft Word. Just go to the mailings tab and select labels and there should be a drop down list of all the different brands/ types of labels. It will format the page for you.
  4. A local cacher who I am friendly with but doesn't have many hides had suggested archiving some older caches and then place a new cache, with the same name (+" redux", "return of", etc.), description and maybe change the hiding spot 50 ft or so. This was because the old cache doesn't get visited much anymore and it would allow the locals to revisit the cache area and have a new cache to be found. It would also allow me as a cache owner to enjoy new logs. At first it didn't seem like a bad idea but if I did archive the cache in order to place a new one, I would want to make it a completely new cache and location although proximity issues might limit how far from the original location it could be hidden.
  5. I actually just got finished ordering 10 more of these containers last week. I had good luck with them so far. The material does seem to be a bit thinner than the preforms but they appear to be larger in size which I prefer. I do add an o-ring to the container to help with waterproofing. I also use this large bison tube like container from dealextreme and liked them enough to order more. Edit: And yes they do take forever to arrive from overseas.
  6. With $7.95 shipping and $1.33 tax (I am not even in there home state of CT but they are charging it anyway) that would be $28.23 or $.94 each.
  7. I too have run into this problem and made a point of putting the number first on my 20 cache series.
  8. That is because Northern NJ has the best bunch of cachers in the state!! Whoop Whoop!!
  9. You do not want to go there: New Jersey is home to more scientists and engineers per square mile than anywhere else in the world New Jersey has the highest or 2nd highest (haven't seen the 2010 Census data) per capita income in the US We're smart and well compensated geeks. Any wonder why there are so many caches (and the need for more reviewer help?) Here Here!! Way to stand up for our great state! Don't let anyone talk trash about us.
  10. Please don't. One of the things that makes caching in NJ so good is the lack of "lame" caches. (Queue up the LPC debate) I'm sorry we hold our cache placements to a higher standard. But we like it this way! I have to agree with this. We have our share of LPC's and drive up micro's but I have so many nice caches near me in parks, reservations and in the mountains to keep me busy for years to come. It is easy to avoid the lame ones if needed. I have been spending some time in Watchung lately and have been having a great time. Some really great caches there.
  11. My current favorite is Who's Watching You!! Three creative stages that were a blast to find. After finding this cache I relized that the final was mentioned in the "Pictures - Cool Cache Containers" thread. I'm not telling which one it was.
  12. More reviewers can't hurt though I do agree that OReviewer is doing a fantastic job up by me. Welcome aboard Cotton Malone.
  13. One of my containers is attached to a large wooden garden sculpture which weighs about 40 - 50 pound and was very awkward to carry. I took my son's jogging stroller and loaded the sculpture on for the .25 miles trip down the trail to GZ. While the stroller did the trick it was a bit of a tricky ride down the trail with the sculpture falling off a couple of times along the way. I hid the cache during the week in the early afternoon and I did not meet up with anyone along the trail. On a couple of my caches I have needed a ladder to place them so you could find me walking down the trail with a 6 ft ladder or my Telesteps. Never had any problems with passerby's. Just look like you belong and are doing nothing unusual and you should be good.
  14. I built a birdhouse that was placed in a nature preserve that also had birdhouses in it but none were in the vacinity of my hide. One cacher commented on how they thought that it was part of the park. I placed perches and drilled 2 holes that did not go all of the way through the door and then painted the holes black to give the illusion that they were holes. The unique feature I added was one of those plastic owls that start hooting when it senses motion. I placed it behind a plexiglass panel to discourage someone from taking it as swag. Open door and a friendly owl greets you. After being out in the wild I see that the local wildlife has spent some time investigating this container as there are scratch and bite marks on the roof but it still remains in good shape. A fun cache to make.
  15. I guess I have "dirty cached" one time on a local 5/5 where the one stage I could not find the clue that gave me one digit of the final. Based on the hint and the math problem used to deduce the digit, I was able to figure the digit to be 1 of 3 possible digits. I plugged in three sets of coordinates into the GPSr which ended up being right in line and maybe .2 miles apart and figured I would go to each one until I found a likely spot. Ended up finding the cache at the first set of coordinates. I actually had some friction with the CO before seeking this cache (unrelated to this cache) so I didn't mention how I arrived at the final in fear he would try to justify deleting the log. I did email the next set of cache finders as to where they found the info for the stage I couldn't find and none of them has gotten back to me so I am guessing they got some help from a friend and didn't find that stage either. Or maybe they don't like me.
  16. And I have never seen so many PMOC in an area before. WOW!
  17. Had a similar thing happen to me. Here is the cache I created from it: Is this cache yours? I am guess that there was a proximity issue when first placed and the owner never returned to retrieve it.
  18. I have this cache located 34ft up in a tree Climb Tree, Find Cache - EXTREME!. I love the pics of the cachers up the tree.
  19. How does this sound. Someone come up with a replacment container identical to the original, put it in place and then log a "found it" and say "Hey, it looks like the cache thief brought it back out of the goodness of his heart. And he even filled it with some great swag!" Since there was nothing left on the original container identifying it as such then who could prove otherwise?
  20. If the decision is made to replace the container I think it should be an identical container that can be decorated nicely with the Planet of the Apes theme on/ in it. It will never be the orginal but still make it something special to visit. Cache owners replace missing containers all of the time. I can understand why they would need to be consistent with the archiving of this cache as they have done with the other APE caches.
  21. So I guess I did something wrong? slukster's log - Walk Through Water! (be sure to view all three pics and the CO's response)
  22. Some of us have called it the three cache monte. That is what I was looking for. Thanks.
  23. I was surprised not to see anything mentioned in the "DNFs and Log / Container Replacement Policy" section of the ET Highway Info Page saying it is acceptable to swap the containers as you go rather than replace them as you found them (what was the phrase that was coined to describe this activity?) It had been mentioned in the forums that it was an accepted practice by the cache owners.
  24. I lost my Garmin Legend HCX after leaving it on the trunk of my car after a nice caching day in the Adirondacks. Didn't realize it was gone until I got a call from the park worker who found it on the side of the road. It definately was a good idea to change the welcome screen to include my name and phone #'s.
