  1. Well I just can not get it to work with the Mac but I did get it working on my wifes pc netbook. The driver disk for the serial to usb cable just seems to not be communicating with the Garmin communicator for some reason. The netbook will have to do. Thanks for any help.
  2. I forgot to mention that I am using the third party cable which has the serial plug adapter to a usb cable
  3. I have a new iMac desktop computer. I just downloaded the Garmin communicator software. When I push the "find device" button on the cache page it says "no device found". What can I do? I had this problem way back when i first started with my pc but cant remember how to fix it. I do have the usb plugged in. I have An eTrex high sens. Thanks.

  5. I understand now. Did not realize it was multi. I was doubting myself more than my reviewer. Believe me. Those guys do a great job. Thanks. I guess I will have to move it. But I will have to find the other one first.
  6. I just went and replaced a cache that I had from last year but had to archive because it was covered with some new concrete near it's spot. So I went back to do another because I really like the spot but there is a cache in the area. I used my gps to check the distance. It was .11 miles. This is within the allowable limits. Well my reviewer said it was too close. I am not sure how he measured it though. GC27ZEJ is mine ( he published and then did a temp disable to give me time to move it a bit) GC259D7 is the other one. Can someone please confirm this distance for me. I used an on line calculator and it came out to .11 miles again. Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
  7. I can't believe I missed that. Well yes I can actually. But thanks for pointing it out. Thanks.
  8. I know I can put notes in the log area, but as people add logs that note will be pushed down and out of sight. I need to put a permanent attachment in my cache listing about where not to go because some areas are getting trampled and there is no reason for cachers to go that way. So any info is good. Thanks.
  9. I had placed a new cache about 3 weeks ago. A week later I was informed of a group of cachers who moved a log near ground zero (actually behind the tree the cache was hidden up in) and found a hive near the log. The group was stung 26 times in total. I felt terrible and disabled the cache. I sought advice from our local Geocaching guru as to what I should do. He said reactivate the cache with a warning in the listing just in case of cachers with bee allergies. I also told people that the log and that side of the tree was not the spot for the cache. And not to disturb the log. I walked around the area kicking a few other trees and ground cover to see if it upset the hive. After I determined it to be good I reactivated the cache. I would say that if you can warn cachers of the bees and where they are than you should keep it listed. I did not want to move mine because it was a really interesting and challenging spot in the tree to find. Poisonous plants and encounters with wild life are going to happen when we Geocache. If we never placed caches in the area like this, we would not be able to enjoy this hobby.
  10. I am sure this has been brought up before but I need help now. I have it on my face neck and arms. I was hunting in the dark and did not realize it was there. Thanks
  11. I own 8 caches now. My reviewer is great. He published one after just 45 minutes after I submitted it the last time. But the longest took until the next day making it about 12 hours. I think most take longer though.
  12. A submarine? Hmmmm. How could I get a cache in a submarine? I will have to work on that. I will try to up it to a micro instead of a nano. That just would not be right. Now it would be perfect if I could get the submarine into my subdivision.
  13. Well I live in Michigan. When MI was looking to pass legislation to allow CCW permits some pretty big politicians and law enforcement officials said it would be like the "old west" in MI. After it was passed and the permits were issued and more people were carrying after a while those same anti's had to eat their words and some big time law enforcement officials came out and admitted that the crime rate went down and there have not been any negative problems to date. The funny thing about this is that I used to be against gun carrying. I did not see it value and thought just "rednecks" did it. Then I did some research because I hate being in an argue with some one and not know what I was talking about. So I wanted to find some negative info about states that issue concealed carry permits. Things I could use in an intelligent conversation. Well I did not find this negative info. Crime went down in the states with the right to carry. Very few bad incidents to speak of. So I stopped arguing about it. Then I got sick and tired of all the reports on the news about random shootings. Then I did some different research. Now I carry. My wife was a tough nut to crack because we have to young boys in the house. I told her to go and try to find one incident where a child was killed by a gun owned by some one who is a licensed weapon carrier. She came to our side after doing the research. We are a very responsible group of gun handlers. Most of us train in gun handling and shooting often. It is not a bunch of crack pots out there who want to go shoot some one. I hope and pray I never have to draw and god forbid shoot someone. Although drawing and shooting go hand in hand. I'm out.
  14. When I said it was unusual for my caches to go this untouched this long this is what I mean. I submitted two caches this evening. Now I know my reviewer rocks but he already had them published within about 1 hour. And both were found and logged tonight before it got too dark. That was quick. Submitted, published and found in about 2 1/2 hours. These two are located in the same park as 2 others I have and the park is about 2.5 miles from my sub. Hmmm. I think it is the proximity to the sub that is doing it.
  15. If I would have just stuck that nano onto a fence post some place or in a crack of cement or some other mindless hide I would agree with you. But that is not what I did. I guess you do not approve of the micro either. Any one can spray paint a small or normal size container and stick it behind a bush in the woods too. To say that either one is less or more creative or better just naive. If you saw the cache we are discussing you might not be so critical, but than again maybe you would. I could have used a bigger container, but it was not the size of the container that was the point of the find. It was figuring out how to get it. I was going to use one of those water proof match containers, but I wanted to save it for something else. Well thanks for all the input although I could have lived without hearing how inept I am because I can't seem to hide a bigger container in an urban environment. I guess I should go and start hiding ammo cans in the woods.
  16. I did not have to use a nano. I just used it because it fit into the little compartment I made. The whole sign is really the cache, but you just have to figure out how to get to and sign the log.
  17. He was not questioned. That was not the case. The cacher saw someone in their front yard look over at him. I would call that a muggle sighting. Period. Same as a park or any where else.
  18. I contacted a few neighbors closest to the cache sight. I told them about what was going on with Geocaching and that there was one on their street. None of them had a problem with it. I added a note in the cache listing letting people know that the neighbors are okay with it. I wish I could find a trail in the woods to put all my caches, but us city folk have to do urban caches too. I think making the find fun and interesting is the main thing about Geocaching. I have had good comment about my hides so far, so I must be doing something right. Every cache can not be an adventure into the wild. Especially when you have to maintain them. They have to be some what close to where you spend most of your time. Thanks for the input.
  19. Okay. it seems that people would be concerned about being spotted. I will stop after work on my way in to the sub. I am going to talk to the first couple house owners and let them know what is going on. Then I will note in the cache listing that the nieghbors are aware so hunt away. A bit of info about the cache spot though. It is tucked behind a sign on a telephone pole ( getting to the container is the tricky part. It is pretty obvious that the sign pertains to caching once you read it). There are always signs for garage sales and homes for sale there too. I would not think that if you were standing there looking at the sign that any one would think that much about it, maybe you could be getting some info off the sign. The closest house to the pole on that side of the street is a couple hundred yards maybe. By the way, he was not questioned. She just saw him and it was 5:30-6:00 am. That was probably the strange part.
  20. I usually get more people going for my caches. This is my last posted cache. Only 2 people have sought it out. I can not see anything in the listing that would prevent them from seeking it out. Can you folks look at it and see if there is any thing in the listing that would discourage cachers from going for it? I put a bit of work into this one and want to share it with others. The only thing I can see is that it is a nano and in the size discription there in not a spot for nano, (they should have added that when they updated the site by the way) so it is blank. Does that matter? Should I just change it to micro? The container is a nano but the spot it is in is pretty obvious. I just made it kind of tricky to figure out how to get to the container. Thanks for any input. Here is the listing, GC1FDE6. By the way I realize that it was only posted 5 days ago, but in my area that is a while to wait.
  21. It was a valid and genuine question and I'm not a crazy anti-gun person. For all the reports of people with guns helping people, there are an equal number of (if not more) reports of guns killing people, children killing people or shooting people with their parents guns, guns being wrestled out of people's hands and being shot with their own guns. But I think it's a cultural thing, there are a billion other ways to protect yourself than with a gun and I'm not a part of the culture that feels it's necessary to have a gun. Do you have any other reason for carrying a gun other than for your own protection? Because a man can protect himself without a gun if he has the desire. I suppose I can understand if you had one at home for someone breaking and entering but to carry it around with you all the time? How am I to distinguish you from a GOOD person packing a weapon or a BAD person packing a weapon? I'm not trying to turn this into a anti-gun thread, the opposite actually. I'm trying to understand the mentality of someone who does so, because the only people I've ever met who own guns are those who use them for hunting or farming, and never someone who carries one around all the time. I'm not trying to fight, I'm genuinely trying to understand your mentality, past the immediate (and in many cases - incorrect) thought of paranoia. Point 1, yes there are accidental shootings. But I challenge you find one involving some one who is a licensed concealed gun carrier or some one keeps the gun in a safe. I keep my guns in a safe that only my wife and I know how to open. My boys are also familiar with the guns. I mean that they know about and are aware of them. So it is not some kind of toy or thing of fascination for them. It is alway some jerk who left it sitting in a bed side table loaded and not locked up properly. Or some one who left it under the couch cushion. Something like that. Not responsible gun owners like myself. Point 2, never bring a knife to a gun fight. I will be armed with at least the weapon as the most armed criminal will come at me with. If I have a tasor it will not help much against a criminal with a gun. Karate, or a knife, or pepper spray will not either. If they have a gun and open fire in a restaurant or any place I am with my family I will be able to take action if I feel like I need to. And you will not need to know me from the bad guy. You will not see my concealed weapon until I am shooting the guy shooting other people. Than you will know the difference. I would never draw my gun unless I would save some ones life or prevent a rape. point 3, you probably have met other people who carry them around ( unless you live some place where it is not permitted of course). We usually do not tell people. You could be standing some place and talking to a concealed gun carrier and not know it. You would be surprised at how many states have the right to get a concealed weapon permit if you meet the requirements. There are not a lot of people who know I carry at most places I go. My mentality is that, I got tired of finding out about some one walking into a Wendy's, A Coney Island restaurant, a mall, a school ( although I am not permitted to carry into a school with a permit) or in front of a court house downtown or a church and shooting innocent people for no reason. Do you ever go to any of those type of places? I do. My family does too. The police can not be every place I go with my family. It is my job to take of them.
  22. Why would some one carry a gun on them at all times? That question always makes me wonder what people watch on TV or read in the paper. I assure you that you would find many more reports about people getting attacked by people than wildlife. The crime rate in this country is still rising. With todays economic landscape people will go to extreme measures to try too survive. I will be more prepared to protect my family and myself if it happens. I do train with my fire arm regularly. But lets not turn this into an anti-gun thread though. To each his own. But hopefully if you or your family is ever in need of help, someone legally carrying a gun is there to help you.
  23. Well the cacher made it back to sign the log before he went out of town. So he got the FTF any way. Thanks for all the input.
  24. This is what I have done. I asked when he would be back from his trip. No answer yet. I told him that if he can not sign the log before some one else than he loses the FTF right. I made a note in the cache page stating that due to a misunderstanding that the cache is still open for FTF. I might make a note on the cache page if this comes up from some one else. I do not think every one will have the same problem. I will also make sure I cover the spot where you can actually see the container at all. If you do not see it you might just keep looking. Thanks for all the great input.
  25. What he means is, I wrote on the sign " please do not remove this sign". I put it there so some one would not come along and take the sign down because they do not know what it is. Just like we put on any other Geocache container. Okay I guess I need to point out that the cache involves a sign I put on a pole next to some common signs you might find on a telephone pole. I do not want to get too in to the details but if you want more info contact me.
