Release both fingers as soon as the logo appears.
-
Put your finger on the top left corner of the screen and keep it there while pressing the "Power On button". When it powers up it will ask you if you want to Start in the Maintenance Mode. Answer "Yes". Select "Clear Waypoints". The nivi 660 will power up normally after you answer "Yes". Do not press any other buttons if you do not understand what you are doing. The Nivi will delete all Favorites and reset all controls to factory default so you will need to adjust them to your desires. You can of course delete them one at a time but with a PQ it will take a while. I do this with each caching trip so I can see the icons on the screen.

I'm glad that someone now agrees with my post #34. What a great feature this is, much better than the google one. If anyone sees a bug in it, now is the time to speak up. Thank You Geocaching.

Try setting up a new Rote and PQ to see the results

It appears to me that a change has been made in the CAaR issue. I now notice a sliding bar to select the miles along with a sliding bar for the number of caches on each side of the route. I did a PQ and it appears to me that the issue has been solved. If true I want to thank those responsible for the fix and a great feature. Would someone else check for results.

I created a route between Ocean Springs, MS to Lafayette, LA starting first with 1/2 mile (returned 87 caches), then 1 mile (returned 98 caches), then 1 1/2 miles (returned 125 caches) and finally 2 miles from the route (returned 102 caches) of unfound caches by me. The cache return from 1/2 mile to 1 1/5 seem reasonably correct but problems arise with the selection of 2 miles or greater with the cache return reduction and nothing returned on the final 60 miles of the route. The higher mileage selected after 1 1/2 miles produces a much lower return with the next higher mileage selection. Other routes might produce different results I must say that this feature is a great addition to the Geocache page and is greatly appreciated. It appears that most of the work has been done for this great feature and it might be a minor fix to correct this problem. Thank you.

Thank you Jim. I read all the post but since no one has recently been talking about it I thought it was just me. You are right, this is such an improvement over the other method as the routes allow change so easily but without proper results it is of little value. Maybe this will bring it to light again. Thanks

Am I the only one having trouble with this new feature? I can generate a route (BTW, great method) but am unable to get many caches along the route unless I select .5 or so. If I select the larger mileage limits I get only a few caches. What am I doing wrong? Thanks

What is the current status of the new Caching Route Feature? Am I doing something wrong since I only get a few caches along a route when I know there are plenty or is this feature still being worked on? The last attempt was yesterday. Thanks

Garmin Nuvi - True Paperless Geocaching
Leftygator replied to pilotsnipes's topic in GPS technology and devices
I have never had that problem (don't use that feature) with my Garmin Nivi 760 but I do have other problems on my 760 with the unit voices breaking up, multiple alerts for the same cache and unit hanging up requiring a reset to get working again. This happens on both Pilotsnipes and jjreds Macro and do not feel it has anything to do with the Macros but the firmware of the 760. Problems generally happen when the alerts go off if they are too many caches within the limits that are set. It got so bad for me that I went back to my Garmin 660 and the problem went away. I find if you use "Daniel" as the voice the problems are better. I am no expert of this and the above is just my opinion. Are other users having problems with the 760? Ken -
fixed in v7.2.7 j Thank you so much for your prompt attention to this situation. I just downloaded the new version and update the PQ to the POI and coordinates are posted on the Nivi but are not correct. This is what appears on the page. Lat=30.345533 Long=90.005 Edit - converted decimal degrees to decimal minutes in v7.2.8 j My hats off to you Sir. Tested and running great. Your Macro just gets better and better. Thanks so much.

I have just noticed that if a cacher put a corrected coordinates in the log entry it does not show up on the cache page transmitted to the Nivi Unit. See GC1MQ42 See the entry dated Feb 21, 2009 part of which is posted below and note that the coordinates are not included in the Nivi page. February 21 by mbooda (2355 found) N 30° 20.732 W 090° 00.300 Difficulty could stand another half-star, given the thoroughness of the cover, and especially the offset. My waypoint represents where we found it, about thirty feet away from the zero. I also want to thank you for all the hard work and valuable information that you have provided with this Macro. Ken

Ken, if it uses a default tone I'll add a "silent" soundfile to be included in the tools. Let me know. j I had a chance to use the "Tourguide (No Sound)" and no sound was heard as expected. I set the Distance to 4000 feet thinking I would see an Icon (no alert sound) at that distance but the Icon only appeared about 600 feet or so from the cache location. I did notice that the female voices were stuttering pretty bad but when I switched to Daniel it was much better but not completely gone. Again, thank you for your help.

v.5.9 Added alert type "TourGuide (no sound)" j jjreds, you are the man. I have followed this thread from the start and cannot thank you enough for what you have provided to the caching community. Even if this does not solve the scrambled voice problem with my 760 I really Thank You for your effort to help. Now I am waiting for an opportunity to test. My best to you. Ken

The 760 continues to give me problems whenever 3 or more caches are in the area. I would like to see the visual of the Icon displayed on the screen without the alert or even a delayed alert if it would prevent the unit hanging up or the voice shuddering. How do you program the delay? Can we turn off the alert and still get the Icon of the cache? I have also tried Pilots Macro with the same result on the 760. you should be able to turn off alerts for a database by selecting "no alerts" for "Alert Type?" j When you turn off the Alerts, you also turn off the Cache Icon when within the range selected. Is it possible to have an option to allow the cache Icon to appear within the distance selected and not the alert (which causes problems on my 760)? Hopefully this might allow the visual presentation of several caches within the area to be of assistance and doing away with the alert which scrambles the brains of my 760. I really appreciate your hard work making this such a valuable tool for caching. It's a shame that Garmin put out a unit which will not function as my 660 did on this Macro. If this is not possible or a problem I understand. Thank You

Thank You. I never had any doubt that the fault was Garmin but what I was doubting of why I was the only one reporting a problem with a 760. My 660 does not have this problem so the problem rests with the 760. Garmin are you listening? Here is an individual (jjreds) that spends his time and effort to make something useful that allows you to sell many of these units and you should listen and fix this problem.

I am still having trouble with my new Nivi 760 with multiple alerts, voices that break up, routes that disappear. The other day I received 15 alarms for five caches (no spoiler pictures) that were in the general area. When these alerts go off you cannot understand the voices. I have upgraded my Nivi to the software Version 4.6 with no change. The unit seems to work ok when only one of two caches are in the area but when you get multiple caches it just goes nuts, even to the point of having to reset it. Are there any other users of the Nivi 760 out there having problems or is it only me? Again a high density cache area is when the problem appears. Previously I had a Nivi 660 that jjreds Macro worked great on that unit. Something must be wrong with the Garmin Nivi 760 to do this when the other Nivi units work well.

I sent some screen pictures of the process and Catch pointed out that I had a path wrong on one of the screen. Thanks to Catch the pictures are now working on my 760. I will test the other problem that I have at on my next cache run at a later date.

Over the last week or so I have been reporting that I have been unable to get spoiler pictures on my new 760. The pages are downloaded and all appear to be working but I do not have the ability to select to view them. Have tried several things to get it to work but have been unsuccessful. Today I hooked up my 760 to the Macro and then selected the 6xx as the series to to use in place of the 7xx series to process the Macro. This works and I am able to view spoiler pictures without a problem. I do receive the "Image" button and can select them on my 760. If I process the Macro using the 7xx series I DO NOT get the "Image" button. Listed below is the other problem I am having but do not know if it will be corrected by using the 6xx series in place of the 7xx series. I will need to go on anohter caching run to see if it makes the 760 work better. QUOTE(Leftygator @ Dec 31 2008, 05:45 PM) I took my new Nivi 760 on a caching run yesterday and it was not a good experience. The Nivi locked up a few times and had to be turned off to get it running again. The voice directions were broken up many times and hard to understand. The selected route was complete turned off and had to be reset several times. On two occasions the person selected on the Nivi went blank and the defaults had to be called in to be able to select another person to give directions. All of this seem to occur with the alerts going off and confusing the Nivi. I could be wrong on the alerts being the cause, but the problem seems to occur after an alert. All of the above problems plus the previously reported Spoiler problem. Is anyone else out there using the Nivi 760? If so how about a report on your problems. I previously had a Nivi 660 and did not have any problem.

My 760 works perfect with this macro. It locked up often earlier, but that was corrected in a Garmin SW release some months back. Thanks for your reply Catch. What Version software is on your 760? Might is 4.6. We may need to compare notes on screen outputs if you are willing. I'm glad to hear that the 760 is working on yours. Are you also getting spoiler pictures? Again, thanks for your reply. Maybe I can figure out what I am doing wrong.

Hmm, I have not sent you any email.... So Sorry for posting the wrong name. It should have read "Cache O’Plenty" and not Catch who have been exchanging emails.

Thanks for your help. Para 1: No on the GO button page for a little Image of a picture. Para 2: Yes I have three of each file located in the C:\gsak\POI_Loader\POI Data so everything seems normal there. Para 3: This may be the problem. After hitting the Run Spoiler Macro button at the top of the large window next to Waypoint I have the following: c:\Gask\Tour Guide_Tools\POI Data.loc This may be the problem. What should it read. My email is okray@cableone.net. I appreciate any help you can provide. Ken The .loc file is just a temporary file and gets created whenever you run the spoiler mac. It contains a list of the gc codes to be run by SpoilerSync and is deleted by the macro. Catch and I have compared pictures via email of the 760 screen presentation of the spoiler picture and they are different. I have the actual pictures stored in the file but the right side of mine seems to be cut off and not allowing the thumbnail to be presented. I would post them here but just do not know how. I have installed the latest software, version 4.6 and am up to date in that area. I have also attempted to check the same blocks that Catch does to make everything equal. Are there any more 760 users on board having problems with spoilers or am I the only one?
