  1. All of the sudden it doesn't let me upload from the cache webpage. I can save the file as a GPX & load the file to GSAK, and then to GPS. The prompt tells me to upload the current plug in - although I already had it, but still the same message. I have a Garmin Vista HCx, and have never had issues in the past. Help!
  2. I could load many coordinates (cache along a route), but don't want to print all my possible caches.... I am kind of new & like the print outs (easier than dragging along my laptop, which I have done in the past). I have GSAK configured to give me the hint, but that space is limited (unless I can get more than 2 lines of info). I have a eTrex Vista HCx and have been GCing since June (altho winter caches have me stumped and I have been going through withdrawal.... but the snow is melting ) Also I would love to get someone to help me out with how to use some of my other features that my GPS has, which I am sure there are a few. Thanks All
  3. I am relatively new to GC (since June 08 & only 1 winter find - what do you expect in MN ). anyways this would be my first trip out to the Sun City West/ Surprise area, AND I definitely need to pick up a few. I will be taking my mom and dad along (see if I can get them hooked ) since I will only be there 4 days.... can someone give me some general direction to find a few - what part of town would be a MUST SEE - I'd prefer not to wander for 4 hours on one cache - although back in MN that was common occurrance .... I ran a PC, and can go off of that, but thought I would also throw something out here. They are over by Pebblebrook GC & I know we were going over to White Tank Mtns .... I'll be out Feb 19-22 Feel free to email me direct: sunshine999299@hotmail.com I am so looking forward to temps above zero....
  4. It is an "Operation Enduring Freedom" coin, and that is all that it has on the one side the otherside is just brushed gold. As I said I got it from one of the vendors listed on the GC website as a place to order trackables. The TB idea is great, but only two problems, I have sent off 2 and both pretty much went MIA right away - so not exactly wanting to send another out - a little dull setting one out and it goes no where. Second problem is how to attach the TB?
  5. Now you are taking all the fun away from us newbies.... As I zone in on GZ .... 261ft...200 ....165 ....98 .... oooops a stream, or can we consider it a creek, where are rocks so I can cross, is there a fallen tree? Shucks, that was a nice little hike .... back up & around (then again aren't we all out here just for the hike in the great outdoors) Guess that is why some folks can rack up 20-30 finds in a day and I can manage 7 or 8. Personally I do enjoy the journey, as well as, the hunt. Happy Hunting Everyone
  6. I am also new, & to be honest since it's just me, I generally don't take anything unless it is a TB or coin But I always leave something. I get my swag from the dollar isles, happy meals, co-workers that collect pens and other goodies. The best fun I have is when I meet families on the trail and get to talk with the kids, and ALWAYS have a supply of goodies with me - reminds me of halloween. This was really fun here in MN with the State Park Challenge where families could "borrow" GPSs and try GC. To see an 8yo master the GPS and the parents wide-eyed looks were priceless, welcome to the era of technology
  7. If I get close to GZ and see other cachers in the area already, what is the etiquette? Can I walk up and join them in their search, should I hang back & after they find/ log and step away, then come over or just leave all together and come back another day. This hasn't really happened yet, but I have passed folks either coming or going, and I just got to wondering. Thanks
  8. I did buy it from one of the vendors listed on the GC.com website. It goes back to me not realizing the difference, and therefore not asking when I ordered it. Ahhhh, the lessons us newbies have to learn
  9. I thought all geocoins had tracking #s, and it was up to the owner if it was put out as a trackable or a collector. A trackable being something that is kept in circulation, and a collector coin being one that someone gets to keep. So I bought a geocoin, and it doesn't have a tracking number, which I didn't notice until after I got it (and had it for a few days). Since this is my first Geocoin, what is it that I am missing? I am not really finding info on the FAQs or out here under the Geocoin forum - at least not on a newbie level - so I am out here in the general newbie forum. THANKS!!
  10. It was mentioned that GSAK isn't free. It is free for 21days. After that you can continue to use it for free, but you get these "Nag" screens they call them encouraging you to pay a small fee. I am relatively new to GC, and have found GSAK to be very easy and gives me tons of info, easy to import and export. I just discovered I can save caches to HTML, so I can access everything while I am off-line. Yes when I cache along a route or am out all day it is easier to bring my laptop. I am getting a new laptop shortly and based upon that fact that GSAK is only WIN based at this time, I will be buying one with WIN OS.
  11. I am hoping someone can help me. My brother is part of OEF, and recently shipped out. I got into GC this last spring, and have talked it up. He would like to try it while he is over there .... but I need some help in pulling it together. I do know generally where he is. Will someone that has been over there, please email me and help me. Thanks! sunshine999299@hotmail.com
  12. So the suggestions go from one end of the spectrum to the other. The only thing that is agreed upon is to not leave "broken" toys in the cache. I like the idea of "practical" items, I don't cache with kids, so generally don't take anything but just leave something. I get my swag from the Target $1 aisle. I guess I was always ok with not taking anything, knowing that some family would come along with kids and find this cool "treasure" I had left. I am curious, is it better to leave "treasures", or more practical things? I know I will now get a zillion responses. Instinct for me, is telling me to keep dropping the "treasures", but then will the next cacher, slap their forehead and say not another one with only junk.
  13. This is actually a very good question. When I first started, ok and still sometimes, I feel like it takes me forever to find the cache - anyways back to the topic, in the beginning I was so paranoid that someone would ask what I was doing. I am usually out on my own, no pets, no camera, no kids, trapsing around with my hiking shoes and jeans if I anticipate any bushwhacking. Now after a few months, I would welcome someone asking me, and giving me the opportunity to explain. But as someone mentioned before, you have to read the situation, if you think someone will destroy the cache or knock every tree down on the way to a cache, I don't share. I love families with kids - the young 6-10yr olds totally get the GPS, and coordinates, and caching - must be internet games or something. Anyways.... As time has passed, I don't get so paranoid as I dive off of the beaten trail into the underbrush.
  14. Heard about it from a TV Program over a yr ago - decided it was a great new spring/summer hobby to go with my camping. Came out here, asked lot's of questions - ok I learned you never ask outright which one should you get (50million replies later) - I went out & got my Garmin, and the rest is history as they say. I joke that it went from a hobby, to a passion, to an obsession - everything I do, I see if I can plan to pick one up or cache along a route. My family is so grouchy that I am generally rolling in late - but I explain I do have my priorities.
  15. Can there be duplicate tracking numbers out there? I grabbed it from a TB Hotel (Hostel), logged it as a find. Then someone logged it and grabbed it from my inventory, using the same date as me. I still have it in my grubby paws I don't get it, so now I can't drop it. Need some help. I did email the owner of the TB, as well as the person that logged the grab ~ so now what do I do next?
  16. I try not to wear shorts, but every once in awhile.... Since I always carry water bottles, and have a shop towel, and after coming out, I run water over my legs and then wipe them down, and repeat a few times. The stinging seems to fade pretty quickly. Folks think I am weird with so many water bottles, but there is a method to my madness
  17. OK. I will wait a few months and keep an eye on it. For future reference, you mentioned going and getting a dog tag printed, mentioned a note saying .... How do I find what the "blah, blah" part should be? Should the tag also be engraved with the word COPY? Sorry this was my first bug. Like I said for future reference. I was so excited to get the bug out there, and I guess didn't expect to see it not move right away. I know patience and persistence. Then again neither fits in well with obsession Only took a coupld of months for that to happen I appreciate all the input/ advise. i would suggest waiting a couple months before you send out the proverbial copy tag. What you could do is go to wal-mart or some place that does the pet id tags and get the tb # engraved on a pet tag, then attach it to your hitchhicker along with a note saying that this is a tb not a regular trade item, blah blah blah. that way you would still have your copy tag just in case.
  18. Is that allowed? I recently put out my FIRST TB. Dropped it at a TB Hotel, thinking that would be a good place to start. Well it appears it has already hit that proverbial graveyard. It's been three weeks since I dropped it and no log, and 1.5 weeks since I checked the hotel & it was MIA. So it would be cool if I could re-start it using the "copy"
  19. Awesome, thanks a lot! Now that school's over, I have more time to cache more and get more into the hobby - bought my first GPS today. I am also a newbie, and have now created and used Cache Along a Route 3 times and LOVE it. I use Google Earth, and GSAK. GSAK link can be found on GC.com, although it is a windows only application ~ that's ok for me tho ;-)
  20. I am going to preface this by saying I am a newbie.... but have really gotten into GC. We just found out that my brother is being called up and heading to Afghanistan, and since this thread came up on the search, figure I would try posting here. He is also new to GC.... Wondering if I can send a coin with him, or what can he actually do over there as far as GC.... Thanks!
  21. OK let's add 2 caches in a small regional park, where I got confused which one I marked as found, so I had to back track, and while doing that walked within 15ft of the other cache. It was when I wasn't looking at the GPS, ( #2 coordinates had earlier led me to the garbage can by the entrance - ok so I am a total newbie) and I was walking back to the car from my back-tracking and saw #2 sticking out about 2inches from under the porch of the old farmhouse on the property. Sometimes it does help to actually look around as you trek along.
  22. This is actually an interesting topic for me, although I am not even close to attempting of these caches (but a good one to save to favorites). I think my GPS does allow me to "project a waypoint" (Garmin HCX Vista). That being said, I would like to get a suggested website (not just do a google search, but one that will actually teach me something) to learn more about these orienteering basics - I know I am backing into this, but it would be nice to actually understand the process behind the GPS, instead of just following the GPS blindly. Thank goodness I can mark the location of my campsite, it saves so much time when I head off to take the scenic route Thanks in advance!
  23. I have a slot for it. What is it, what would I use it for? I have been able to load all my waypoints so far, so is it if I wanted a zillion waypoints - which I would never want anyways, since the GPS doesn't have a search feature... I do have the US Topo Map, would it be used for this? If that is a yes, how do I use that? Would that come up as an additional map when I am hunting for a cache? I don't want the entire US coming up when I am looking for one close by or even 100+mi away from home. I only want the topos associated with the cache I am hunting. If I should get one, any suggestions on brand, size etc. I have a Garmin HCX Vista. Thanks for the info!
  24. Is there a way that I can sort my "cache along a route" routes? For example on Sunday I am heading up to a cabin and am doing a PQ for that. Can I only pull up that PQ in GPS or GSAK? Rather than have it mingled together with other PQ? I'm going to guess no, but thought I would ask anyways. HAPPY 4TH EVERYONE!!
  25. Good Suggestion! Thanks! That also avoids someone running around thinking that the bug has to be at the old location
