  1. There's a cacher in Essex has found 1000 without using a GPS. Personally, I wouldn't be able to find my boots without help. They're up to 2000+ now. They do it all by OS maps, dead reckoning and Grahame's outstanding mental maths translating 1000ths of minutes of longitude and latitude into paces.
  2. It would seem that I was accessing the broken server - all was well by Friday night
  3. Works fine here... Here too on IE8 and FF It's been working like a champ for me since the update and I generally like it. I'd prefer to see the "logbook" tabs on the cache page instead of having to click through to them, but otherwise I like it. For the record, I'm on Win7 32bit and I've done this on Chrome 13, IE 8, and FF 3.6 I've finally got a page to load with logs - another freshly published cache! I'm on Chrome 13 under XP(32bit) and FF 3.6.7 - neither have previously successfully loaded a page, until now!
  4. I take it you've actually managed to get a cache page to load with any logs on it. I've just tried to load a recently published cache (60 mins ago) and it's still struggling to find the reviewers "Published" log. At the moment this site is not fit for purpose!
  5. Has anyone managed to get a cache page to load any logs yet? I've just tried a recently published (60 mins ago) cache page and it has yet to find the solitary reviewers "Published" log. Sure not being able to read logs and share the experience of others is one of the whole points of geocaching? The site as it stands really is NOT fit for purpose.  It's a shame that this major SNAFU has totally outweighed all the other good features in the release. What was wrong with the logs the way they were?
  6. I second Gazooks comment and whilst you're in the area, consider GC2PDVP Pirates of the Sole Bay. A little homework beforehand and then a 3 stage multi - a proper treasure hunt and great for kids of all ages and sizes.
  7. There's been no problem with the Essex Country Parks being listed on here. Contact Michelle (sxparx) for further details.
  8. However Hasbro do have the monopoly and get very very tetchy if you mention the word or even have something that looks remotely like the board game. At my last employers we had on the website home page a circuit style board game in which the play went anti-clockwise as indicated by an arrow. The squares indicated the various insurance products we had on offer and the strap line was something along the lines of Insurance neednt be a game of chance; there was a big stress on insurance anyhow. Needless to say after about 12 months we got a threatening letter from Hasbro indicating legal action would be taken. Apparently the dice and the arrow (without mentioning the word Go) were the sticking point. To whoever picks up the new race round London challenge, just don't call it Monopoly. (Thinking about it I'm sure The Beek/Graculus would probably pick it up on the commercial aspect)
  9. I'm with you on the Earthcaches, Virtuals & Webcams, but for events there's usually a logbook to "sign" or otherwise indicate that you were there. (Some flashmobs I know have you sign a slip and place it in the bucket!) As you can guess I only count 6 types of caches (trad, multi, unknown, Wherigo, LBH & events)
  10. I think I'd prefer a correctly functioning site to an "I did something" sticker.
  11. Which one was that? Sidetracked - Shenfield
  12. I've an idea let's pretend the 18th August didnt happen - perform a complete rollback (we know that site worked properly) - delete all the challenges already done/accepted etc - fix the bugs in the new site - BETA test it - and then re-release the new site including challenges to a fanfare of trumpets!!! We'll have already gotten use to the idea of how the challenges should be used rather than the ill-conceived release examples and we'll probably all be a lot less miserable.
  13. In that part of Suffolk, you're spoilt for choice. The Bassett caches are superb but perhaps a little further north. Down Walberswick I recommend the Pirates of Sole Bay cache - great fun!!
  14. Hopefully that will convince them to roll back that little feature of the upgrade too. One lives in hope
  15. Service Unavailable HTTP Error 503. The service is unavailable. Too many idiots folks kissing that ruddy frog no doubt!!! <deep sigh!>
  16. My DNF loggings depend on how far away from home I am. If it's local then I'm of the mind that I've just not looked hard enough and I'll come back again. I'll probably only log a DNF on the 3rd visit or if I'm sure I've searched everywhere. If I'm away from home then I'll usually log a DNF there and then, in the hope that the CO comes back with a reply. In one instance of a missing Church Micro, the CO replaced it within an hour so I called back in on the way back. As for my cache hides, I have on which has approx equivalent numbers of Finds vs DNFs and I'm really not sure why? Even DrSolly had to make a 2nd visit!!!
  17. It may not surprise you to hear that I would much prefer not to see virtuals and earth"caches" listed on a geocaching site either. I have done a handful, but none of them added anything to my experience of visiting the location, to the extent that when I knew I was going within 5 feet of an earth"cache" last Sunday, I didn't even look at it, let alone log it. So at least I am consistent . Now where is the Like button when you need it. Some of the Earthcaches are informative but I've yet to find one worth going through the logging rigmarole for.
  18. I installed these on Chrome by mistake last week and was mightly surprised to find the OS map feature. It's brilliant! Thanks very much!!
  19. Perhaps there should be some drink related forfeit as there is with the Turtles?
  20. I read somewhere that a riot on your own is called a "tantrum".
  21. Isn't that why there are other listing sites? So the heavy concentrations of one become the empty wilderness of the other. As for quality vs quantity - isn't that why Terracaching came into being - for those hearkening back to the good old days of caching being a semi-secretive and geeky hobby before it became mainstream. Certainly the website interface is suitably geeky and unintuitive enough to scare off the casual user. But then we all play the game to our own set of rules don't we?
  22. Argh!!!   It's ORDNANCE!!!     Sorry my little bete noir
  23. Can recommend the Satmap with a 50K UK map card and a 25K for Essex. I believe there's a cacher working for Satmap these days so it's a lot more cacher friendly than it once was. However with these changes to POI data storage for geocaching you can't get many caches on the 25K SD card. It's worth scouring ebay et al for a second hand model and then pay the £25 for a full service & overhaul - which conveniently gets ownership transferred as well. It has its pro & cons - the immediate pro is the huge screen of OS map, the downside is forking out for other cards - but I'm learning to love the 50K UK map and it should be all you ever need. If you use it *a lot* the USB cover rubber seal breaks (currently stuck back with insulating tape) and the joystick toggle wears off - all sorted with the general service. I'm currently averaging a service every 1.5 years and it's about a 3 or 4 day turn round. As for enforced layoffs - well it used to be only when it went in for service - but now I have an Oregon as backup, for Wherigo's/Chirps and trips abroad.
  24. ... an archived cache called "P P P P Pick upa penguin" I know some of you hold collections of archived caches - I think this one was somewhere around Winchester - Marwell Zoo ??? A GC code would be much appreciated.
