  3. If you find a cache with empty candy wrappers or spent napkins (of any kind) in it (or anything else that you recognize as "trash")... do you have only the choices of trading for it or leaving it? I don't think so! If I find something that I am 100% convinced is trash (and/or offensive)... I'm going to help the cache owner with cache maintenance. I will remove the items that I am wholly convinced are garbage... and will not feel obligated to replace it with something of equal value. Shoot... I replace it with air... which is probably worth more than the trash I removed. I hope everyone does the same! Note: I'm not saying that religious tracts are garbage... I'll let you make that decision! ------------------------ I honestly do not believe that I am the only person who does a mass pull on cache coordinates and then searches with that information (and nothing more) in hand. This theory of... don't go after any caches that you feel are going to be offensive... is bunk! The first time I saw the descriptions for probably (at least) half of the caches I've found... was when I went to log them as found. I've seen this same argument on (potentially) commercial caches. It's getting old. ----------------------- If people are going to start putting religious tracts in caches... what's next? Bibles in hotel rooms???? _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... Get Lost! _____________________________________________________
  4. quote:Originally posted by Geo Quest: While I'm at it, how 'bout I quote it for you? "Amendment I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances." Just out of curiosity... What does this Amendment have to do with what a group of geocachers decides is/isn't appropriate to place in caches? As best as I can tell it prohibits the Congress of the United States from making that decision... but no where does it state that any other group of people can or can't make a similar decision amongst themselves. _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... 8. There appears to be some sort of parasitic infestation in the forests, parks and other natural areas around here that was in epidemic proportions this weekend. A rather strange creature. Seems to be attracted to light and/or fires after dark and clusters around open bodies of water during the daylight hours. It seems to be an extremely sedentary creature. More often that not, when you see them, they are moving VERY slowly if at all. During the day they seem to want to rest on the banks of rivers or lakes (often, but not always, clutching some sort of stick). During the evening they seem to position themselves close to open fires but rather than continue to circle it like most insects (or a geocacher closing in on a cache) would, this creature just positions itself near the flame and then continues to rest. Interesting side note... they only appear to infest the natural areas for two or three days at a time (usually on weekends)... resting all the while... and yet, at the end of this short period they seem to appear rather exhausted. (Go figure!) They appear almost human. I know they can't be geocachers because I've never seen a geocacher rest that much at a time... and these creatures seem to (on average) leave considerably more litter than they remove... obviously not a geocacher trait. If anyone can help me understand this odd creature... or has seen it infesting other locations... I'd appreciate hearing about it. Oh... and while it may be interesting to study these creatures... I'd recommend you try to avoid it when it's migrating... It doesn't seem to move much faster while migrating than it does when clustered around a flame. Gawd, they were everywhere this weekend!!!!! _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... Get Lost! _____________________________________________________

  11. I'm not sure how I missed this thread 2 weeks ago... I just stumbled across it while doing a search on... of all things: Jenni. After reading Jeepsters remarks, I'd like to take a moment to defend myself... no really, I would... only problem is... just about everything he said I did that day... really DID happen ... but he makes it sound so much worse than it seemed at the time! Oh well! In answer to the poll question... I don't read the logs... which is probably part of the reason why I don't put much in mine (including T.O.D.). Based on this thread, I may have to start spending a little more time reading them. (and... I'll try to remember to put a time in them also.) Oh by the way... Since Jenni usually does lead the way to the cache... and since she is a water lovin' Golden Retriever... maybe it wasn't an accident that she took me for a stroll down the wrong side of that river rather than going to the cache! Bad Girl! Bad Jenni! _____________________________________________________ Eagles may soar but weasles don't get sucked into jet engines! _____________________________________________________ The early bird gets the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese!

  15. Jenni has never had a problem with car-sickness and she has logged considerably more miles than most. (10 trips from Illinois to Oregon and back and 100+ miles almost every weekend for 11 years). The few times she has had a problem it was always after ingesting something. (Twice it was due to something she ate... twice after ingesting large amounts of salt water... she hasn't figured out that the Pacific Ocean doesn't go down quite as well as the water found in fresh water lakes and rivers.) So... I would agree with DonnaG that that might be part of the problem. I HAVE found that Jenni does want/need considerably more to drink when were on the road than when were stationary though. So, you'll probably still need to keep plenty of fresh water available. Good Luck! _____________________________________________________ Eagles may soar but weasles don't get sucked into jet engines! _____________________________________________________ The early bird gets the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese!
  16. I especially hate the signature lines! I keep telling my other two personalities that they should take them off of our posts... or at least... between the two of them... decide on only one... but NOoooooo! So I live with it! 17. At 11 years of age, Jenni is finally to the point where she tires before I do... but she still starts the morning a lot more enthusiastically that I ever have (or will). We've always spent the weekends exploring and/or hiking... geocaching has just given us new destinations... but one mention of the word 'auto' and she's heading for the door. 18. How far would I drive for the pupose of geocaching? I wouldn't. I guess in my case you have the stimulus and the response reversed... I don't drive so I can geocache! I don't hike so I can geocache either! I love roadtrips... and hiking... and exploring new locations... and exercising Jenni (my 11 year old Golden Retriever)... and would do all of them even if there wasn't an ammo box or plastic tub sitting in the woods. 20. Totally off topic.... but the expression in your topic has me wondering... if someone on the other side of the planet is half a world away... Is someone "a whole world away"... sitting in your back yard? Nevermind... I guess I was in a whole 'nother world when I asked that! Come to think about it... if someone IS sitting in my backyard... I guess they probably are... oh nevermind! _____________________________________________________ Eagles may soar but weasles don't get sucked into jet engines! _____________________________________________________ The early bird gets the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese!

  22. Hey guys! Actually you're both right! After going like crazy since mid-December, the last few weeks have been somewhat slow for me... partly due to the weather over some of the recent weekends... partly due to the distance that its getting to be to the nearest caches... partly due to overtime at work... and most predominantly, due to a root canal I had recently (not to mention the medication afterwards and the pain before it)... you really don't know how jarring a road trip is until you do it with an irritated nerve ending at the end of a tooth root. But I also found 5 last weekend... including Markwell's Cachiversary... located in one of my favorite parks. I still say GREAT choice of parks Markwell! There's a couple new ones in the Bloomington area... but I'm on a winning streak at "the boat" so I've been to Peoria three times this week... A streak initiated when I won $2000 in Joliet last weekend. Since then I've won $30, $20, and $100 in my 3 trips to Peoria... I guess you'd say I was looking for a different kind of cache (cash?) this week. I'm guessing I'll be back out, at least looking for a couple tomorrow. I haven't decided which way I'm going to head... but I'm off the medication... and the weather is supposed to be partly sunny and near 50... Sounds like Geocaching weather to me! _____________________________________________________ Eagles may soar but weasles don't get sucked into jet engines! _____________________________________________________ The early bird gets the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese!
  23. I'm not much of a people person... and not interested in one-on-one dialogs... but if you post a question here, and no one else responds to it... I'll help where I can... 24. Hey all! Just a couple quick questions... One is rhetorical, neither really important, but I'll ask anyway... 1.) What the heck is a T-SIP???? 2.) If we're now dividing states by terrain, climate, and ecology can we honestly call the "Great Northwest" only one region? Shoot! Shouldn't Oregon, for example, fit into a MINIMUM of three regions? Just a thought. _____________________________________________________ Eagles may soar but weasles don't get sucked into jet engines! _____________________________________________________ The early bird gets the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese!
  25. OK... I can't say I've never read the hints or descriptions... but usually, when I'm heading out... I'll just grab my GPSR... which I've already loaded with all in-state cache coordinates and go with nothing more than that. Since most of the caches I search are 100 miles (or more) away, it doesn't make sense to review them (or the cache descriptions) when I get back home... I may never get a chance to hunt for them again. _____________________________________________________ Eagles may soar but weasles don't get sucked into jet engines! _____________________________________________________ The early bird gets the worm but it's the second mouse that gets the cheese!
