  1. and so I says to myself... Self, I says... who gets out and sees more of the countryside than anyone else you know? And my self responds back to me... oooh, oooh, I know.... how about the geocachers?!?!? Anyways... Keep your eyes out for the following area where two kids removed from their home in New Hampshire may be buried... +++++++++++++++++++++++ Authorities searching for two missing New Hampshire children were focusing efforts on the 190-mile long strip of Interstate 80 stretching from the Ohio-Indiana border to Joliet, Illinois. The FBI said investigators were searching for a rural, grassy area that could be located up to 10 miles on either side of Interstate 80. Details about the site the FBI is searching for in the Midwest include: Five or six cement cylinders standing on end, approximately 4 feet in diameter and height. A 6-foot fence with a rectangular pattern in the immediate area A mound of gray or white rocks that would be used in drainage applications. An old-fashioned silver and green hand-lever water pump. An irregular cement slab, 4 or 5 feet in diameter, on the ground. Several large shade trees, similar to willows with limbs extending to the ground. A nearby eroding embankment. A tan or yellow building within view of the site. Additionally, Jay Fallon, FBI supervisor in New Hampshire, released the following information about the approach to the site: Exit I-80 westbound and make a right turn at the end of the exit onto a two-lane paved roadway, one lane each way. Take another right turn onto another two-lane roadway." Fallon said the road may run parallel to I-80 and "has a yellow line down the middle, which may have a dotted yellow line." To the right off this roadway is an opening in tall grass. The grass may be 3 to 4 feet tall, green at the bottom, tan or brown at the top, with seeds at the top." There is a downhill slope from the roadway, then an uphill slope to the opening in the grass, Fallon said. The grass may be "somewhat matted down" from other vehicles traveling through it in the past, Fallon said. ++++++++++ While the above information is available from many sources, to protect Jeremy, et al from copyright concerns, I'll admit that this was cut/pasted from the CNN website.

  3. I guess it depends on your map... but I just checked the one I've got and it seems Alaska is in the upper left hand corner. While I've thoroughly enjoyed multiple visits there, I've yet to do any geocaching on those trips. I have on the other hand cached in about half of the states in the contiguous 48, and can honestly say that the Great Northwest does indeed have some of the best geocaching... and geocachers!. Somehow it just doesn't seem fair though... I mean, shoot! It seems like the best of everything is found there! And, somehow, I'm stuck in Illinois! _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... Get Lost! _____________________________________________________

  7. Well, I figure I ought to get my 2 cents in before Jeremy crawls out of bed and locks down this thread too. quote:Originally posted by Team Sand Dollar:... have the most (not always good) to say on the forum. Also, those who are not able to get out as much may have just as much to contribute as some experienced cachers, and because they want to contribute and/or participate in the hobby, they are willing to share their thoughts here, instead. It keeps them involved. Or, if they aren't the type to want to spend all day in the woods, their counts may be lower and yet the social interaction very important to them. et al quote:Originally posted by Team Sand Dollar:... feel they need to hide a cache before they have done enough to know a good hide from a "I've got to hide a cache" hide. Interesting note on the growth of this hobby... there was a time when we were begging everybody to get out and place caches... quality wasn't important... there just weren't enough to keep the active cacher busy. People who waited until they had 100's of finds before hiding one were known as geosites... a combimation of geocaching and parasite. This is no longer a consistent problem... some places may need a few more... but some locations have more caches than quality cache sites. As someone who will always be more active at finding than placing caches, I am thankful for those who do get out and place them! Even the lame ones! Even the ones that are a tenth of a mile away from another cache (and in this part of the country, you don't see anything different about two spots that close to each other!). It just makes me appreciate the unique, well thought out caches that much more. That said, I'd also like to throw out a disclaimor... in my mind, newbie and lame cache shouldn't be assumed to equate to each other. There are probably a higher percentage of lame caches that are placed by newbies than experienced cachers, but I think this is more related to the fact that the individuals who don't put the effort into the hobby end out dropping out before they get the high counts... other newbies DO put the thought into it... and eventually become some of the better experienced cachers. We all start(ed) somewhere. quote:Originally posted by Team Sand Dollar:... will not except comments from experienced cachers and take them as criticism. This is probably more dependent on the individuals personality as well as the way the criticism was offered than it is on how many caches they've found or placed. Regardless of how active someone is, if they are happy with a cache that some would consider lame... telling them what they did wrong... or what they could have done differnt isn't going to matter... and will probably convince them that YOU are the one with the problem! ...Different strokes! quote:Originally posted by Team Sand Dollar:... Of course the way these forums work, only the teams with the least number of finds will answer. 9. Sorry... it's at work (YES! I have a Winnie the Pooh calendar on my desk at work... and your point is? ) My scanner is also currently out of commission. I'll try to have it up in the next day or two but no promises! 13. The chance of meeting someone on a hike to a cache is pretty slim. More often than not, one of you will already be at the cache and/or one will be leaving when another one is on the way to it... if I come upon someone else already at the cache site, I let them make the decision whether they want me interfering with their hunt. If someone comes up on me, (which has happened at least a couple times) I have no concerns about working together and despite having 400+ finds, still enjoy watching and learning from the way they search. (Unless of course it's Jeepster, then I hope the Mrs is there... otherwise there'd be nothing I could possibly learn! ). I've never encountered anyone when we were both heading to the cache site, but would just discuss it with the individual and see what (s)he thought. My preference would be to work together. _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... Get Lost! _____________________________________________________

  17. I doubt this is anywheres close to a record either, but since you asked... I logged at least one cache in each of the nine days from August 16 thru August 24th. ___________________________________ Edit was to add the following: 2, 3, 10, 5, 7, 5, 11, 8, 3 [This message was edited by Walkin Stick on September 26, 2002 at 05:44 PM.]

  19. A new feature wish list? OK I'll byte... How about these two: 1.) (Related to Clan Fergusons suggestion...) The ability to view the STATE MAPS without displaying caches that you've already found. 2.) An 'official' ranking that shows who has the most finds. I know of two unofficial rankings... The Sweden page seems to be more accurate but not updated very often... Dan Millers' gets updated more frequently but is not consistently accurate. Even if these concerns were corrected... what happens if/when the indiviuals responsible for these rankings quits geocaching? _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... 20. Did you find the cache? (ie... Just about the only way you'd get ME to a hockey match is if someone hid a cache at the rink!) _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... Get Lost! _____________________________________________________
  21. Almost every time, I take 'most if not everything' and leave the same 'most if not everything' as I peruse the contents. Other times I'll 'take only memories and leave only footprints'... sometimes if I can't get my footprint inside the cache, I'll leave my fingerprint instead! I'm thinking the problem isn't that I didn't take and leave something... just that I haven't always logged it correctly... Sorry... I'll try harder next time! _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team.... Get Lost! _____________________________________________________

  23. I don't know, I kind of like the one where you turn your head away from the departing individual and in a real quiet voice just kind of whisper: Phew, I sure am glad I don't have to worry about THEM beating me to a cache any longer! FYI... My first programs were punched on paper tapes too. Geez! That was a long time ago! _____________________________________________________ Support your local rescue team....
