  1. I think cell phones are great for geocaching, however, I also bring along a ham radio. You should get your ham radio license because ham radio is a very interesting and entertaining hobby, but also because it can provide communication when cell phones can't.
  2. You won't find a list; it would be way too long. You find virtuals mixed in the with the other regular caches by searching from coords or a zip code or something. They'll be on the list with everything else.
  3. Wow this one never does really go away does it? I remember a random portion of this from like a year ago. Gosh too much geoforums for me.
  4. I had an LTH (last to have) on a travel bug. It was a stupid thing to do- I gave it away to someone who said they knew about geocaching but apparently thought it was right to keep the bug. Now it's lost. I feel real bad about it still cuz it was someone's doll or something taking a trip. That was when I was a new cacher- it didn't ruin caching for me though, which is a relief!
  5. That's a good point. I wouldn't want some mean-spirited local to snatch up Enspyer if I changed my name.
  6. So sorry to hear of this...brings back a local geocacher's death here. My condolences.
  7. Yeah yeah that happened to me. Detonated my cache! How dare they!? It's now replaced in a tupperware container.
  8. I there is a local cache that has one of those motion detector Halloween decorations near the location of the the cache. So you're trying to be careful and all of a sudden you've got something going "ooooooooooweeeeeeeeeoooooooeeeee!" in your ear. People are always saying they jumped and screamed!
  9. I think it's rather universal. Hmmm...
  10. Our schnoodle is small but sturdy for caching. He generally agreeable, and stands out well with his off-white fur. He likes sniffing around and meeting other dogs on the trails. He's pretty smart too.
  11. They seem to have blown it up in the tree because the inside of the tree seemed a bit "chopped up". The tree is still standing though.
  12. Oh boy I posted slowly. And then the explaination was given. I can't get a word in edgewise...
  13. Particularly thinking of Cheers?
  14. Look at this- a topic about my cache! I guess we're covering most of the points already, but I would like to mentions that part of the intentional attraction was that this cache was an ammo box in a very heavily traveled area. It's the sort of place that most people in the area have visited at one time or another. It lasted just a bit over a year, which was I very good life span considering how many caches I've had go missing in much less conspicuous places. When placing it, I knew there was a danger of muggling but didn't consider the "bomb" issue. The cache was hidden a hollow area of the below tree on the water side: Edit: resized picture
  15. They are very compatible, I've found. The last two years I've gone Winterfest medallion hunting in Syracuse, NY, and I've combined it with finding caches and cache maintenance. Very convenient! (The closest I got was being at the right park too late two years ago...I found the cache there though!) Another hobby that works with geocaching is Amateur (Ham) Radio. We even have the Ham Radio and Geocaching forum here! Caching in groups can be simplified with handhelds, and the general atmosphere of discovery works well throughout ham radio. I'm still pretty new, only having been licensed last winter, after I'd already started geocaching, but I'd recommend both activities!
  16. Seems we found the other half of what used to be the geocache. We saw the Byrne Dairy cup but didn' think of a cache being in one of those, so therefore we didn't sign any logs. We found the lid to the cache, in what I believe was the original hiding place. Perhaps the next finder would sort out the cup and the lid and the log and get all of the cache back together in one place. With this pic: Oh, I guess I can say it- that was me about a year ago. I have since gone back, found the replaced container, and written in that actual logbook, so I think it's okay now.
  17. I never would have supposed those Jeeps required assembly by geocachers. I'll remember that each time I pick one up...
  18. Cool! I don't have the time to find 200 in a timely fashion. 10000 is superhuman!
  19. Interesting idea. It might be worth adding one of those as long as it wouldn't attract animals or anything (I don't think it would.)
  20. Unless you need specific permission, the pictures on the main page would probably be as good a bet as any. Also, try searching the forums (using the search button at the top) for something like 'cool pictures' or 'pictures'. A lot of geocachers have shared really great pictures on the forums.
  21. Any handmade items are special to find in a cache. If you left them in each cache you visited it could become your signature item that locals know you by. I would not be offended by any religious item in a cache, but views on that will probably vary.
  22. If anyone from CNY is disappointed that there aren't any SBUX caches around, they could consider adopting or retrieving one of these (of course only the archived ones). I enjoyed the SBUX caches I found and hope someone from Lancaster, PA will adopt them.
  23. That's really cool...I'd never heard of that before. Apparently there was one in the United States but it's missing now. I've never been to France so this isn't from personal experience, but in French class they teach us that French culture is to try to resist American influences and maintain the old French traditions/activities. If geocaching is perceived as an American activity that is only accessable to Americans, that could be some problem. Especially if someone searched and found not many French caches but many in America...
  24. There probably isn't the same use as AIM. There aren't people here at geocaching who have 20 screen names, like many people I do have on AIM. Even I have probably 5 or 6 sns, while here each of us has one. Plus, here, they could probably delete long-unused profiles while they don't seem to delete old screen names.
  25. Cool CNY Caches- This is a list of my favorite caches from the Central New York Area. It's constantly changing as I find more caches.
