  1. Night caching in Warrnambool, Victoria, Australia.
  2. I don't know about others but my sarcasm detector went off when this was posted. I just LOVE sarcasm My sarcasm detector did not ping at all. Sarcastic comments state exactly what is meant but in a highly caustic, sharp manner. blg723, you merely sounded like a teenager baiting his mother. For the record, I have cached the E.T. Highway, long before the power trail came into being. It was a great drive back then. Mine was the only vehicle on the road from the turn-off all the way through to Rachel. I stopped for a cyclist about 20 miles out of Rachel to offer him water and/or a ride as the weather was turning bad (freezing rain and snow). He had ridden all the way from Reno, NV through Death Valley, CA and across to the Grand Canyon, AZ. He was on the tail end of a six month trip of a lifetime, heading back to the real world and corporate life. I can't imagine sharing that road with power cachers on the job.
  3. Whatever gave you the impression this is a dirt road? The ET Highway is a sealed two-lane HIGHWAY.
  4. While it may be true that "pretty much the whole state is open to grazing" it is equally true that there are many areas here where motorized vehicles are prohibited. These areas are clearly signposted. That people choose to disregard the signs speaks to me of ignorance and arrogance. I'm not rapt with desert living; I much prefer the beauty of the PNW. But even I know from experience that there are wonderful ecosystems in the desert and flora and fauna that should not be trampled. Last Sunday I cached on Kyle Canyon Road (just outside of Las Vegas). Not 50 yards from the road I startled (and was startled by) a burrowing owl. This beautiful creature flew from its burrow and landed just a few feet away from me; it proceeded to bob up and down and make guttural sounds, presumably to draw me away from the burrow opening. At the time I was walking slowly on land that was in places crumbling under my feet; I did not see the burrow until the owl had flown out of it. I can only imagine the damage I would have done to the land, to the flora and to the owl habitats (there were many of these burrows in the area) had I elected to plow over the desert in a truck in search of a few caches. Please, show some respect for the desert, for the cache owner, for the people of Rachel who enjoy the extra revenue geo-tourism brings to them.
  5. Try the Las Vegas Geocaching Meet Up. You may have more luck there.
  6. Belleterre, re ANVHOTM, absolutely! I'll be up for a hike for sure - or maybe even a rafting trip if my hand/wrist is sufficiently healed by then. Email me closer to your travel date if it's still a go...
  7. see my analogy above. what you describe is equivalent to heading for a T5 cache involving a 30 km hike, starting off into the trail and then turning around heading back after 100 meters. if you consider that to be a DNF, then that's fine, but i don't. again, this is my interpretation, and you don't have to agree with me, but i also don't have to agree with you. I think you may have missed the point. Key words highlighted. Making it to GZ is hardly the same as turning back 100 meters into a 30 km hike. I doubt anyone reading this thread would log a DNF in that scenario.
  8. Thanks, everyone, for the good wishes. Perhaps we can have a splinter group ANVHOTM - you can come to Vegas and hike Red Rock Canyon with me! []
  9. I'd love to join but I'm on the move next weekend - I accepted a job with Expedia in Summerlin, NV (Las Vegas). I'll sure miss hiking with you guys!
  10. Another successful AHOTM with some in our group celebrating 250, 500, and 1000 finds. WTG! Glad to see Dug made it afterall (with just one of the dogs); it was great we were able to meet up with you on the trail. The little cacher was still rearing to go after a 9 mile hike - what an awesome accomplishment for a five year old! Thanks for the laughs (knock knock jokes included) and the great company today - and thanks for looking out for me: I went there and back without injury! edit: updated distance hiked
  11. Add two more to the list! My friends Antje & Brian will be joining us
  12. *grabs the popcorn, sits next to knowschad*
  13. Hey, I didn't say I couldn't do the CITO!
  14. Congratulations to 2lashes for find # 3000 at Phobias #10...Culmination. Good job, guys!
  15. Congratulations to lythhansen for their 1000th find on 22 January at Groundspeak HQ. Well done!
  16. Really? Your contributions to the forum lambaste last week of the misguided soul who requested monetary donations for cache maintenance are still fresh in my mind. To quote Carol Beer: * COUGH *
  17. I was ever so hopeful to make this trip... But, the healing process is a slow one with a broken wrist. I tried to hold a trekking pole a few minutes ago - no strength and all pain put an end to that. I still have several weeks in a cast ahead of me so I'll aim for the next outing, be it HOTM or AHOTM... or both! I'm sure you'll all have fun on Sunday; I look forward to reading your logs hydnsek, you behave... there's no jinxing allowed in 2010!
  18. What a sweet coin - I like the message! I, too, enjoy icons that closely match the coin. I vote C. Thanks for the cointest
  19. Land Sharkz based in Vancouver, Canada, sells the cloth camo tape. These guys are reputable business people who love caching - and I love to support them! US customers are welcome and well-catered for. Check out their website here
  20. I'm out - at least for Dec/Jan... I'm the one who fell and broke her wrist during the AHOTM on Sunday...
  21. If this is Snowshoe 101 I'm definitely interested Edit: oops - I didn't read your post correctly the first time. Will this snowshoe hike be OK for beginners or is it just for the pros?
  22. All confirmed - I'll be meeting B+L south of Tacoma and traveling with them (thanks guys!). Regretfully Ibrahim cannot make it (work demands) but he wishes everyone an awesome time and a successful assault on the Green Beret...
  23. If we can tee up a ride Ibrahim and I would love to join you. Watch this spot!
