  1. Star - Ha ha, no, I don't think I'll be following in that guy's footsteps. Aniyn - I'm definitely convinced that pants are a must after a day of wading through thorny plants and bushes in shorts. Even 90 degree heat won't deter me!
  2. Hey everyone! As a new cacher, I was just wondering - what clothing is appropriate to go caching in? As a follow-up, are there any items other than a pen and my items that I need to bring with me?
  3. I was in the same boat earlier today on my first ever cache - I finally got within a stone's throw of the cache, then spent about twenty minutes crashing through the brush before I turned and saw the cache (a small Altoids-like container) nestled in a guardrail. Oh. Remember to look carefully in the most obvious places before dismissing them! Also helpful are the logs of more experienced geocachers - try reading what they're posted about a certain cache if you're having trouble!
  4. Ah! I see! So I need to first get the mapsets I need, then load them to MapSource, then transfer them over to the unit? If this is right, thanks. If I've misinterpreted what you've said, I guess I'll know when it doesn't work.
  5. Hi all. Finally got my GPSr (a Garmin eTrex Legend Cx). The only problem is, I'm having trouble putting maps on my unit. I have installed everything on the CD that came with the unit, and have the GPSr connected via a USB/Micro-USB. I even have the "MapSource" program open, but now I'm stuck. How do I put maps on my GPSr? Does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I'm VERY thankful for any help whatsoever. -ADavid09
  6. I should think that some of the cheaper things you could pick up would be geocaching-related merchandise. Maybe a t-shirt, GPS carrying case, etc.? That would be a cool prize, in my opinion! Who doesn't like free stuff!?
  7. I have a friend who will use the same response whenever people ask him what he is doing, is up to, etc. Maybe I'll try it out on the trails. Q: What are you doing? A: Minding my own business, how about you?
  8. Finally got my hands (well, kind of) on a GPSr. Won an ebay auction for a Garmin eTrex Legend CX, new and in-box, for $115.00 (w/ free shipping). It'll be here over the next 1-6 business days. Anything in particular I need to be aware of when trying to get myself comfortable with this unit? For owners of this unit, how has it worked for you? Thanks!
  9. Wow! Thanks you, everyone, for the great response! I really appreciate the warm welcome, suggestions, and advice you've provided...See you out there!
  10. Hey guys. A purchase that I thought was a lock turned out not to be, so I am currently in the market for a handheld GPS. I am brand-new to geocaching...what do you veterans out there reccomend? I HAVE gone geocaching before, but as more of a "spectator". I would like to spend no more than $200 USD. What should I look for in a product, and what are some examples of good GPS's? Thanks for any and all suggestions!
  11. Hi all! I'm from the Piedmont area of North Carolina (around Charlotte) and am currently waiting anxiously for my Garmin eTrex Legend set to arrive in the mail. I have only been caching a few times, mostly as a "spectator" - I would hike around and watch as a family friend did the actual searching. I really enjoy the outdoors and have been obsessed with treasure hunting my entire life. Even if the treasure happens to be Mr. Potato Head parts, which is what we found the first time I ever went! So I've got a GPS on the way, and I've read the FAQ possibly a dozen times in the past two days. Anything you veterans can tell me? Any help or advice is GREATLY appreciated! Thanks!
