  1. When looking for something you lost in your house your spouse says you're doing the drunken bee dance.
  2. FWIW we did not kill any wasps. The CO has taken it down and plans on relocating it.
  3. Thanks! Had to go manual. The auto focus had a lot of trouble. Also had to take it from some distance as the little guardians seemed to be pissed that we were there!
  4. When i was younger (im only 23, so this was about ten years ago or so) I got stung by a whole hive of bees, along with some other scouts. After that day, i got a phobia of bees, i guess you could call it. I just don't like 'em. If i had "found" your cache, i may have swatted it down and stepped on it to crush the nest. Or i may have just waited till winter to come back for it. Then i would have known. LOL. I just don't like anything that stings. Mosquitoes don't count. and what the heck is a "Blinkie"? do you guys mean Nano caches? Yup. I made a joke about it in my last post. Obviously a regional term (no one in my area says it), although I've heard it thrown around these forums once or twice. The OP only has about 35 finds, so it's pretty easy to find out what cache he's talking about, and the cache owner refers to it as "a magnetic blinkie". Whatever you want to call them, I guess the proper name is Mr. Magneto I learn something everytime I visit this thread! Here is a link to the cache: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/cache_detai...93-31d8f7db8893 I guess I thought "blinkie" was a commonly used term. WD-40 or brake cleaner are some good suggestions. I'll have to keep some on hand in our caching kit.
  5. Finding it and signing the log are two different things. Check out this thread >> http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=66648 I didn't realize there was so much controversy. FWIW I have signed the log of every cache I've ever found except for this one. If the owner wants to delete my log that's up to him I guess. There have been a few caches that I have made several attempts at with no luck. After about 3 misses I might log it as a 'DNF' and email the owner for a hint but I don't lose sleep over it. I'm not doing this for braging rights on this forum. I'm just a bit of a gadget geek that loves to camp with his family and Geocaching seemed like perfect way to merge technology and the outdoors. So think of me what you wish. We found that blinkie on my birthday with about 6 others on that outing. We had a great time and I thought I'd share. Carry on. Edit: OK by "signing the log" I originally thought everyone meant the paper log in the blinkie. Of course I loged it as found for the smiley!
  6. For 40 bucks you can't really go wrong. Consider it a test platform so when you want to make a big investment you know what features are really important to you.
  7. Wow! You guys are hard core! I thought "DNF" meant "did not find". Well, we found it. Anyhoo, it was quite an adventure. One of my kids has severe allergic reactions to, well, just about everything so I wasn't going to risk a sting. The owner of the cache has since taken it down and is looking for a spot less prone to infestation.
  8. Can she use the Vista? That is a very nice unit. My wife uses our Legend HCx. She hasn't learned all the features but if I download caches for her she can take the kids out not problem.
  9. We use our Legend HCx for all the same activities you mentioned. We have been extremely happy with it so far. Stick with Garmin. The compatibility with geocaching.com for downloading caches is a very nice feature.
  10. Great job! I was considering waiting for a Colorado when I purchased my Legend HCx. After reading about issues with the Colorado I'm glad I went the way I did. My Legend has been flawless so far.
  11. Amazon has them for $4.94 + $6.99 s&h. IIRC you can order multiple and just pay a single s&h fee. http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00...5109&sr=1-2
  12. Walmart has 2GB micro cards with the SD adapter for $15.
  13. Anyone able to use Verizon's VZ Navigator for geocaching? I just ordered a Blackberry Curve from Verizon and was curious if it will work.
  14. Nuvi 260 and Legend HCx. I've used them both for geocaching but the Legend is preferable. Hard to see the screen in the nuvi in bright sunlight.
  15. *Update* I purchased a micro sd card and tried to download maps from the map install utility. After I selected the states it said my GPSr was not unlocked for those maps. Any suggestions? I own the maps on my computer. Shouldn't I be able to use them on my Legend as well as my nuvi?
  16. Enerigizer Lithium batteries seem to last a long time.
  17. Lowrance has simulators you can download to sort of try it before you buy it. http://www.lowrance.com/en/Downloads/Product-Emulators/ Lowrance also has a free GPX to GPSr utility that you can download install. http://www.lowrance.com/en/Downloads/GPXto...ng-Application/ I bought a pair of Lowrance XOGs for my dad and father-in-law and was fairly impressed. Their hand helds seem nice too. Almost wish I had gotten the handheld for my father-in-law as he mainly wanted it for fishing. All that being said I went with Garmin based on what was said earlier. Great support from peer groups and easy to use self service support on the web. I also like how geocaching.com lets you download straight to your Garmin.
  18. We really like our Legend HCx. Accurate, rugged, reliable, gets satellite fix quickly. I understand that the pre-H models were prone to losing signal in thick cover. I can even get a fairly accurate fix inside my house! Basic eTrex models can be had for under $200. I'm interested in trying the paperless caching with my nuvi but haven't tried it yet.
  19. Spent a little more time with the XOG this weekend. Street maps are not as up to date as CN 2009. Went to a country club that was in CN but not in the XOG map. Takes a little longer to get a satellite fix and had trouble getting a fix during a thunderstorm when my nuvi didn't seem to have any trouble. Downloaded the newest firmware that's supposed to fix the problem. Takes about twice the time to calculate routes as the nuvi. 1GB SD is the max size card it can read as well. I also found the MapSelect website a little confusing. Still don't know how to download or purchace new maps. Loaded a Navionics map card and was very impressed with the detail. Especially the HD lake maps. Overall it seemed like a solid unit. Not quite as easy to use as the nuvi but has quite a few more features. For the price ($219 Walmart) it would be hard to beat.
  20. When you're navigating press the green bar at the top of the map that gives you turn by turn. Then press the "show map" button. This should allow you to see the cache location and zoom in enough to make it easier. We went hunting with our 260 for the first time this weekend. Although we quickly realized why we got the Legend first.
  21. I played around with them and compared them to my nuvi 260 last night. The street navigation and POIs are nearly identical. The XOG has MANY more lakes and waterways on it's standard maps. Even larger unnamed farm ponds show up. Text to voice is very good also. I don't regret my Garmin purchases for geocaching but these Lowance units are really great. They also have MP3 capibility at their price point. Cabela's had them on sale for $219 this weekend. I saw one place online that had them for $209 new and $195 refurbished. http://www.thegpsstore.com/Lowrance-XOG-Cr...m-P1700C74.aspx One drawback is that the internal batteries only last about 2 hours. That would be a pain for me as my car is my mobile office. I have at least 4 power cords getting switched out through out the day. I've been getting 5+ out of the nuvi. More than enough to last me all day.
  22. These units seem packed with features and has text to voice at one of the lowest price points I've seen. Both my dad and father-in-law drive a lot and fish a lot. Neither currently has a GPSr. The XOG seemed like it fits a nice little niche. Anyone have experience with these units? Also, what water maps would you suggest?
