  1. I believe it...my 9yo daughter is FANATICAL about caching now and INSISTED she needed to have her own username on here, so all her finds can be documented. She said "I don't want it to look like I'm new when I'm like 14 or something and get my own GPS for my birthday. I'll probably have like 600 or something by then!" So "TinkyBug" is technically a registered user here, and when we get back from caching each time, I help her log in, and enter her finds. Some of her comments are pretty funny. I just love how this hobby is something you can do with "whoever is handy"...got a friend over for the weekend? Take 'em caching! LOVE it...so glad I got sucked in!
  2. Where's my lawyer?? Ted?? That sound's like discrimination against us OLD folks. Ted, help! L L! Ummm, I meant: "It would be GREAT to have someone else with me to witness the greatness of the EXPERT cachers in this group!" Yeah yeah!! THAT's the ticket!!!
  3. YAY! It would be GREAT to have a couple other "new" people around!
  4. I say SPACE JUNK! Much like the trouble a hotdog wrapper stuck to the grill of a racecar causes in NASCAR! That's my story and I'm stickin to it!!
  5. Question: is this "debate" a Game or a Sport? LOL
  6. a LOT less confusing (at least for ME!)
  7. WOW very cool! I've registered!!! (I don't think I've ever been "Member #2" anywhere before haha). Thanks for doing this...i already LOVE all the options on that site...
  8. I don't know if a newbie's opinions on the CVC Tag matter much, but I thought I would offer them anyway. a) I think it might be fun to take a stab at finding the CVC Tag sometime--haven't had the opportunity yet, but wouldn't mind trying. Maybe there are other newbies also interested? b] I don't know where all the CVC members are so maybe I'm reaching further than the members do, but I personally consider the Central Valley to be roughly Stockton to Fresno..just my .02 c) It would depend on where he was. I'd gladly go anywhere from the Bay Area to Bakersfield but I for SURE can't go to China ha ha! d) Not sure on the group finds rule, but maybe shorten the 2person rule to just 1? I haven't reviewed all the logs to see how long people have "waited" for "two people" so that they could try again. e) Have you guys actually done "something" to "someone" yet or is it all ribbing and poking fun? LOL Most of all, I hope the majority of you guys that have been around a while and had so much fun generally agree on the above. Sounds like it's been a good ride, and I'd ultimately be fine with whatever the more established cachers think.
  9. Hey ya'll.... First of all, a belated welcome to Wlfpkcrn...I'm also a newbie around here..and this is one helpful and hilarious group far's I can see! Secondly, I know you guys are all about you know, passing 900,000 finds and big numbers like that, but I just HAVE to share I finally have double digits!! 12 finds baby! LOL! Additionally, I found my first Multi-cache during my first out-of-state cache this past weekend. Went to Mass. on business and my boss (also a cacher) took me out for a couple of quick finds on the way from our company picnic to dinner. Lastly I'd like to say I finally got to meet WolfGrrl, SuperGrrl and The Hubby a couple of weekends ago. Seein's how they live gosh, at least 3-4 blocks away, it took some serious coordinating but we finally managed. They were SO kind and showed Tinkybug (my 9yo daughter) and I QUITE the variety of cache-container examples. I was thoroughly impressed and MAN did it help a lot. As new cachers, our biggest problem was we just didn't know what we were looking for!! Now we have a better idea! So thanks to them for that!! Anyway I just wanted to check in and share! Though I don't post much yet (due to a severe lack of interesting material) I love reading everyone's posts. Have a great week! Trysha

  11. Hi Doug, thanks for the welcome! Now I'm going to have to find out: where is the magical dividing line between the North and South? I just gotta know! You guys all sound like so much fun, and I am really hoping we can come to the muffin event later this month. My daughter loves the whole concept of caching already. In fact, when we're driving around, she's always looking for people she thinks are caching, "MOMMY are those guys caching?" ..."No Katie, those guys are fixing underground pipes.".... it's pretty funny. As for NASCARFAM, warn me as you might, but anyone who uses NASCAR in their screenname can't be all bad LOL! My husband and I actually MET at a NASCAR Race, and are big fans. Hope you're all having a great weekend so far. Tinkybug got two teeth pulled yesterday, and today got 10 inches of her lovely hair cut off, and is donating it to Locks of Love! I'm so proud of her--all her idea. And her shorter hair looks adorable. first time it's ever been this short! Anyhoo, I have a TON of work to do this weekend, but hopefully this will be the last weekend of overload, so we can enjoy the rest of our summer! tah tah for now!
  12. Photom, that is a hilarious picture, ha ha!! I have to say, though --that it has DEFINITELY influenced my decision to hang out with people like you guys-- for the positive LOL! Although WolfGrrl and I live near each other, we haven't actually met in person yet, but we hope to get together soon (as in once we have a weekend where we're both HOME). We're hoping to get SuperGrrl and TinkyBug together as well, so I just showed the pic to my daughter. She said "Oh. My. GOSH. Mom, I could SO see you doing something like that!" Bwahahahahahaaaaaaaaa I think this is going to be FUN.
  13. Wow thanks everyone for the warm welcome! I don't know yet about this North vs. South thing, but I smell trouble coming from EVERY direction ha ha!! I love it! I will check our calendar and see if we can make it to merced later this month--I'd love to go to a group thing, but we have a lot of (extended) family commitments these days...my dad passed away recently, and my father in law and g'ma-in-law are both having a lot of troubles lately. They're all a couple hours away as well, so we are spending a lot of weekends in the bay area (my family) and in Porterville (my hubby's family) right now. Again thank you so much for the warm welcome. I can't wait to get to know you all better Trysha p.s. "TinkyBug" my daughter says to tell you all "hi"...apparently she can't get to bed without witnessing me posting that. She's got her own id on here so all her finds from day 1 will count. HAVE A GREAT NIGHT!
  14. Hi Everyone, I just wanted to take a minute to introduce myself. I'm Trysha from Riverbank (near Modesto). I'm a very new cacher, and my exploring buddy is my 9yo daughter, Katie. We learned of geocaching from my boss in Massachussetts who caches with his whole family. I bought a GPS and Katie and I found one of WolfGrrl's caches as our very first find! So we're hooked, but challenged by a lack of time to really dive in as much as we'd like. Speaking of WolfGrrl, she's been SO incredibly kind and supportive just via email and answered so many questionns already. She has nothing but good things to say about the CVC'ers so I thought I'd look up the thread and say hello! I hope to meet many of you soon...thx for letting me pop in! Trysha
  15. YES that's exactly the same problem I had, only mine wasn't the Vista of course. I had purple lines, but no red arrows (after the first trip out of the box). So I knew what it was SUPPOSED to do, just not how to fix. I spoke to a "Jim" at Garmin this morning, and he led me through a variety of settings, menu choices, and even a system reset I guess you'd call it. None of that did the trick, so he too recommended I send mine in. I said better yet, I'm going to let the retailer do it. I haven't even owned the thing for 48 hours yet. I just got back from exhanging it and I'm back in business!! CHA-CHING! So happy! My daughter will be too--she was so bummed we didn't spend all Mother's Day hunting! Thanks to EVERYONE who tried to assist me, you're all great! However that now makes "two" of us with the 'never heard of' bug with the compasses ("Jim" hadn't seen that before either). Phew!
  16. Nope, that wasn't it... it said "Stop Navigation" when I went there. Also, I have a purple line between my home and the cache when I view the map, so I think that's indicative that navigation is "on" right?
  17. Thanks Joe...I was able to follow your instructions and found the area you were talking about. Mine WAS set to "On" so I turned that off. Unfortunately it didn't fix the issue...I still have an "empty" compass. I'm going to try to call Garmin on my lunchbreak today (I expect it won't be a 3 minute phone call, ha ha). Hopefully they can help me, or maybe I just have a bum unit and need to exchange it. Either way I hope to be back on the hunt soon! Thx again for your help!
  18. Thanks everyone--I appreciate the feedback/guidelines. I just wasn't sure about posting in the logs, because (at least the way I view them) you have to make a choice to click on the links to the photos, so they don't show a spoiler by default. I thought maybe if you make a choice to click the link, it's like acknowledging it's potentially a spoiler, but thinking about that from the cache owner's perspective is an even better way. I wouldn't want someone giving up my cache's location either. I think I'll start a personal album outside this site for my "spoiler-y" stuff for family/friends, and just limit my photos here to more generic shots. On a sidenote, though I've only been here a couple days, I am so thoroughly impressed with this online community--especially compared to other hobbies of mine. This group of people seem to be very knowledgeable and more importantly WILLING to share that knowledge in a friendly manner. I can't wait to get to "know" people better and really grab hold of this adventure. Thanks again!
  19. OMGosh, THANK YOU! Ha! I don't know when I would have noticed that. K, so one other question then--is there some rule about how specific your photos can be without being spoilers? Or is the responsibility on the people who decide to LOOK at the photos to not spoil it for themselves? I have a picture of my daughter at our first find (see avatar at left) yesterday, but if I post it on the actual cache log, it's practically a dead giveaway to the location of the cache. Thanks for putting up with a newb! ETA 5/12: I removed the one picture I was using as an Avatar because I didn't realize it was going to update my log entry on the first find cache (duh--what was I thinking?). It was only up for about 10 hours, so phew. thx for the help y'all!
  20. Howdy! I noticed some people have "galleries" in their profiles, but I seem incapable of finding the spot where I can upload photos to a gallery. I get the feeling it's right in front of me, but I'm just NOT seeing it! Can someone please point me in the right direction? MUCH THANKS! edited to add: I should say I can see "Gallery" as a choice when I click my own user name, but of course it says "no images". I need to know where to go to upload. Thanks!
  21. Hi there & thanks for the reply... I can't find any setting for "Off Road Navigation" nor do I see it mentioned in my User's Manual. Maybe that verbage isn't used in my particular device, but I can't find anything similar that I can turn on. :-/
  22. Congratulations!! I'm glad your whole family is hooked!! My 8yo daughter and I made our first find yesterday too. We had a DNF after that, then came home to load more caches into our eTrex. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to get the GPS to work since that so we didn't get to go out again today. I'm glad you guys had so much fun!
  23. Hi Everyone, Sorry to make my first post a request for help but we just got our eTrex yesterday, went out for about an hour then came home. I was able to "write to GPS" the locations of a couple of cache's, so once we figured it out, we came home to load up some more. Ever since then, I can't make the navigation work. I got about 30 caches loaded onto the GPS but when I choose one, and click on "GoTo" it opens up to the screen that normally would lead me to the cache, however all the fields are blank with the exception of "Speed". That one does adjust when I walk or drive. "Dist to Next" is blank, so is "ETA At Dest" and "Time to Next". Also the GPS Compass displays (and rotates when I turn around), but there is no arrow telling me which way to go. Does anyone have any idea what I've done wrong? Have I maybe disabled some feature? I'm bummed there's no Garmin support over the weekends, as I really wanted to go out with my daughter again today. Thanks in advance for any assistance you guys might have. Hope all the moms out there are having a wonderful Mother's Day!
