  1. Sorry... we're still not getting it. Your link wants me to log in as you.
  2. That's interesting. I have the 62st and see different colors with the built-in 100K topo than what you described on your 62s. On my st, the contour lines are brown and black (every third line is black, and the brown lines don't show up when zoomed out to a certain point.) The roads are grey, and the water blue. The colors are a bit different in BaseCamp, most notably the contour lines, which I believe were light grey. The biggest "problem" with the colors on the 62st, however, is that the DEM shading is much darker than it needs to be, and makes it hard to see trails when they're on the shaded side of mountains. I was in a steep area, and it was very difficult to see the dashed grey trail due to the shading, as well as to the very dark topo lines. This is not a problem in Basecamp, where the shading is much lighter (but still easily seen), and the topo lines are light grey. Even if they keep the dark topo lines, I really hope they update the colors so that the DEM shading is lighter. It is simply much darker than necessary at the moment. Larry On my 62st water is gray just like the roads.
  3. One of my first (perhaps my very first) posting on here was a suggestion for a rating system, and man! did I get blasted for it!! (or, at least I felt that way at the time). I got links to previous discussions, I got "oh, geeze, here we go again", I got the works. Hmmmm... I should go back and find that thread and see if it was really as bad as I remember it, and who the participants were. Edit: Here's the thread To be truthful, I didn't put much effort into crafting my response to your suggestion. You mean you guys tried to disenfranchise/scare off Dog w/Specks and it didn't work? Dang it dang it dang it! Sorry Chad... I'm in an ornery mood this morning and just pokin' fun.
  4. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4myv5taUVqk But what means 62ST Squeaker Terminated WOW!!! I have a 62st and it doesn't squeak that bad. Maybe the "t" does stand for terminated!
  5. I am confused about what it is that you are attempting to do. I think the answer is "no", but can you please elaborate? I found a cache but when I went to log it in there was no Navigation Box in geocaching.com in which to log my find like all the other caches have had on their screens. So I was wondering if I uploaded it to geocaching.com from my GPS it might somehow be logged into geocaching.com. I can get it from the GPS to GSAK but I can't get it any further. I don't know how else to get it there but it seems like there must be a way. At the bottom of your web browser use the scroll bar to move to the right. Some pages are wider that other and the Nav field may be off screen.
  6. Yes... on the map screen and in the found list also (I think).
  7. Deleting caches on the 62 is like the Oregon/Colorado/Dakota were you have to delete the gpx file via your computer.
  8. There's always one in every crowd, isn't there? Which phone? G'z One ROCK. I had the previous model but lost it last winter while caching I work construction and if I didn't have a rugged phone it wouldn't last a month. The phone I lost dropped it into a bucket of paint once. I washed it off in the sink and all was good.
  9. Yeah, way to compare some of the most disposable personal electronic devices on the market to something that is supposed to be RUGGED...like an outdoor use GPS unit. Are, by and large, cell phones shock proof? Water resistant? NOPE. Can you drop the average cell phone in a stream and still expect it to work? NOPE. Should we expect these basic things from a handheld outdoor use GPS? YES. Mine is!! It's a "Mil Spec" phone. I never leave home without it!!
  10. 5000 caches / 2000 waypoints on internal memory Unlimited caches via POI but no paperless features (cache page, field notes, ect.) Edit to add: Unlimited up to the usable storage space on the SD chip.
  11. I've been reading that this fast charging is the best approach for NiZN ones. It's related to chemistry used, maybe it won't hurt the batteries and perhaps slow charging wouldn't be advised. Time will tell... 'm not sure there is anything but the "fast charge" charger for NiZN NiZn technology is well suited for fast recharge cycling as optimum charge rates of C or C/2 are preferred. Known charging regimes include constant current of C or C/2 to cell voltage = 1.9V. Maximum charge time is 2½ hours. Trickle charging is not recommended as recombination is not provided for and excess hydrogen will eventually vent adversely affecting battery cycle life. Charge is reinitiated after cell voltage has fallen below 1.6V.
  12. My 62st has a little squeak but not bad.
  13. Great chargers! I use a PowereX MH-C401FS Smart Pulse Charger, 1-4 AA/AAA. It only holds 4... I need to get an 8 slotter.
  14. don't over-discharge them though, as that can permanently damage the cells. when the unit says it's low on battery, swap them out (assuming the device knows how to measure the charge of NiMH cells). i don't know if it's actually possible to over-discharge them by simply using them in a GPS until it shuts off, but personally i'd rather be safe than sorry. Good point even though I usually use them until the unit shuts down on it's own. I know with larger batteries (cordless drills, ect) they recommend not over discharging them. Edit to add: I haven't notice any performance degradation discharging until unit shuts down as of yet. Not saying it's not happening but as of yet I haven't noticed any significant change over 2 years of usage of my first 2 sets. They're still going strong.
  15. Careful with the 'quick charger' as many of them will shorten the life of your batteries. A conditioning charger is your best choice...check out LaCrosse. In many cases the charger is actually more important than the batteries (as long as you're using quality batteries). +1 Quick charging can also cause the batteries to get hot. Plan ahead and charge your batteries over night. If you can get a charger that has an automatic trickle charge feature would be ideal as to not over charge the batteries. Also some of the lower quality rechargeables have a high discharge or leakage rate (can't remember what it's called). Meaning if not on a charger/trickle charge they will lose they're charge over time.
  16. The higher the better. I'm currently using 2300 mAh but I have seen as high as 2700 mAh. I bought an Energizers 4 pack of 2300 mAh NiMH last winter for about $16 I think. For better life pair them up and still fully discharge them even though they say that "memory" isn't an issue and they will last for a few years or over 100 charges. Mine have.
  17. You can add several lines to the welcome massage. I added: Hello The Ravens Let's Go Geocaching! emailaddy@yougotit.com 123-555-5678 123-555-4556
  18. Glad someone figured out the start up message. That was one thing that I missed being a 60CSx owner. THANKS!! Because it gives us something to do while we aren't caching
  19. I wish there was a volume control. I can hardly hear the tones.
  20. Currently Own: Garmin GPSmap 60CSx Garmin GPSmap 62st Garmin Nuvi 260w Previously Owned: Lowrance 68c Depth/Fish Finder w/GPS
  21. I believe all of the Nuvi series have the "Add Coordinates" option. As far as voice input you'll have to go to Garmin and look to see what choices there are.
  22. But it is listed on the Garmin website. You have to look under the "Mapping Handhelds"
