  1. BBWolf beat me to the punch, but I continue to be amazed at just how much there is to see and do in our tiny state, and geocaching has shown it to me. There is LOTS to do here, and there are a ridiculous number of caches available to boot. My girlfriend and I now go on geocaching-specific vacations to explore new places, and we ALWAYS discover things we never would have expected. We basically just pick a spot on the map with no smileys and go there. Geocaching is the best tour guide you could ever want. Amen!
  2. I'll do Kansas. Here is a tourism site with too many links to mention. Most people think Kansas is boring. If you do a little digging you'll find that we have been instrumental in several National policies and there have been a lot of famous people that were born or grew up here which are historical sites that you can visit. PLUS we have the "The Wizard of Oz" museum . If you like seeing the countryside we have 10 scenic byways which a few are listed on the National Scenic Byway registry.
  3. I'm not sure what your doing or not doing but I can send my owned caches to my 60CSx with GSAK and from the GC.com website. As far as marking them as "Found" caches once loaded I have a better solution. Change the icon. That way they are not in your "Found" or on your "Need to Find" list and you can bulk deleted old/found caches without deleting your hides from the unit. I use custom icons that I have loaded and use the "Star and Ribbon" or you can use one of the standard icons already on the unit.
  4. As far as I know ( I own a 62st) is that all the custom icon are pre loaded. The only icon I needed to add was the " " to have it the same as my 60CSx with the custom icons. There is also a thread in here about adding new icons to the 62 series. PS If you need the icon email me. Thanks The Ravens! This is EXACTLY what I wanted to hear I think I would be lost if I didn't have my icons!! The other question I have about the icons is this. Since I have my GSAK macro setup to look to a certian folder for the custom 60 icons, I'm assuming I will need to change that once I get the 62st and point it to where this icons are located? That is something I don't know about since I'm not familiar with the macro you are referring to. I guess you'll just have to play around with it until it works for you.
  5. I didn't read all your post before I posted link. I don"t know if this will work with a Mac.

  7. I would just like to add/reinforce that you should buy something he can grow into but also use at his age. It's like bicycles. Sure he might not be able to touch the ground while sitting on the seat of a 20" but in a year or two it will fit just right and last many years. It sounds like the eTrex Venture HC is the unit for him.
  8. Quick reply.... 8-12 hours. Long answer... 8-12 hours equates to popping in a newly charged set as I walk out the door and it lasts me all day. When it comes down to it I don't really care how fast my GPSr eats batteries as long as it's not a ridiculously short amount of time like 2-4 hours. I use rechargeables so the cost is minimal and I always care 2 extra sets with me.
  9. There are two dashboards "Geocaching - Active" and "Geocaching - Nearest" on the Oregon the later has been redesigned in the newest release but it still has the find count. Well, yes. But before, there was the simply Geocaching dashboard. Then they brought those two you mentioned and there were all three available. Now the original Geocaching dashboard seems to be gone. And this is annoying: I like to see the caches count but have no interest at all in seing the "nearest". Actually this remind me of how lousy it is to "navigate to nearest cache". How many times do we want to to that, blindly? Wouldn't it be easy to the software engineers to provide us with a list of the nearest caches and not just THE nearest cache? Anyway, this is becoming a little off-topic... point is, the original Geocaching dashboard seems to be gone and that is bad. By the way... this is the dashboard I'm talkin about: http://papacaches.files.wordpress.com/2009...w=160&h=240 Is it the old "nearest cache" dashboard and I'm confusing things? How cool!! I like the Signal wallpaper!!
  10. I did all that as far as where to place new icons. My mistake was thinking resizing from 16x16 pixel to 24x24 was making them 24 bit which wasn't. I figured it out and now I have it working. Chalk this one up to user error. Thanks for the help.
  11. you have to name the bmp file to the same than the replaced waypoint is named. that said: name your smiley bmp to »Geocache Found.bmp« Happy Hunting Hans Ok... I must be missing something here. First there isn't a custom waypoint folder to replace a waypoint. I did however add the new icon to the CustomSymbols folder and named it Geocache Found.bmp but it's not working. Can some one clarify what the proper procedure is on replacing default icons with custom ones?
  12. !Excellente! I've been wanting to do this since day one of ownership of my 62st.
  13. I have a 62st and I don't think you'll go wrong with one of these. It doesn't have "Wherigo" and it doesn't have a touch screen but I think it's more accurate then the Oregon and screen visibility is on the ok side in sunlight. Mine doesn't have the "squeaky" problem everyone is complaining about with the 62s and 62 models. If that is a concern buy one after you have a hands on test at a retailer and don't purchase it by mail order. Like all new tech releases there are going to be bugs at first and they will all be worked out. At least you hope. I haven't had any of the problems listed in the other thread but I only use my unit to find geocaches and not for tracking or navigation on the road or elevations. If they are concerns than read some of the threads tilted "62". This is just my opinion after 2 months of use with my 62st and I've never owned an Oregon.
  14. I just went and looked. The 62 is .3cm wider than the 60 series. Height is the same.
  15. I think they start to disappear around 3mi but you can change it. It works like the Colorado/Oregon. This is fixed in 2.4 Tips on how to improve readability are here (I stole these from the Oregon wiki). http://garmingpsmap.wikispaces.com/Miscellaneous#toc5 Not without mucking with .typ files as suggested earlier. You are in Marine mode. Setup>Marine>Marine Chart Mode>Off will fix this. I've also seen the issue with jumpy elevation plots on my unit as well -- definitely related to squeezing the unit, pressing buttons, etc. As was posted on another thread you can see this by going to the elevation plot and watching the elevation change as you squeeze the unit, it fluctuates significantly. I've asked Garmin about this but the response was that all units with waterproof altimeters do this (to some extent). Seems much worse on the 62s to me. I'm assuming the 62 works the same way as all other Garmins and will record GPS elevation (vs. the bouncy altimeter elevation) in the track if you use this trick: http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Altimeter#elevationtype I'll try tonight to see if it "fixes" the issue as Timpat suggests. Excellent!! I now have BLUE water! Now.. how to adjust the volume??
  16. 60 and 62 have a different sized screen. You can look at a comparison on Garmin's web site. I believe the 62 is bigger but I can't remember in what way(s). Zagg's IS the best. Their shields are made out of the same stuff the Army uses to protect helicopter blades. It's tough stuff! Plus they back it for life. I've already put in a request for them to make a cover for the 62 but who knows how long that will be. I would suggest 6s owners to do the same. The more people request them the faster they may get one one the market.
  17. The "tree huggers" are going to have a cow with this one. Very cool! I love it!!
  18. Well... I don't know how much you want to curtail the info sent to the unit and I am new to the 62 same as you but with the latest version of GSAK you can now choose the 62 in the GPS Setup and when you send the gpx file you have an array of options like the number of logs and others. As far as deleting caches... your stuck. The only way is to delete the .gpx file off the unit, sort out found caches and send a fresh gpx back to unit. This will also delete your "Found" caches. It's just the way it works. If you don't want to go through all of that... go get a 60 or pre-Colorado unit.
  19. Very nice! One thing though. I would dull the point so no one gets "hooked'!
