512 card--how much will it hold (Garmin 60CX)
geobernd replied to Boolala's topic in GPS technology and devices
Since you already have City Nav: just select all the map segments you want to install and it will tell you how much space they need. -
Paperless caching-PalmZ22 GSAK/Easy GPS?
geobernd replied to I am, therefore I Cache!'s topic in GPS technology and devices
Take a look at http://www.smittyware.com/palm/cachemate/ . IMHO that together with GSAK is an unbeatable combination for the Palm. Last time I printed out a cache page was over two years ago -
For me it's always North Up (mostly on Topo Maps) when hiking/caching, Track up (on Road Maps) when driving. I also change data fields and a couple of other settings. Would really be nice if the GPS manufacturers would come up with user definable presets that store the whole set of settings so I can just define a personal 'hiking' and 'driving' mode...

The biggest problem with the second one you posted that I see is that it relies on some kind of cellphone network. In very large areas where I hike and cache there is no cellphone reception. So any system would need to be based on a global satellite network (which the ACR one is - it's the same emergency beacon network that Aviation and Shipping uses around the globe).I can't tell you how good the ACR works as I have never had to use it and I hopefully never need to. In theory you unfold the antenna - push the button and wait for rescue... Only to be used in dire emergencies with direct danger for loss of life or limb.

Not quite. This is what I have: ACR TerraFix 406 GPS Interface/Onboard Personal Locator Beacon URL http://www.acrterrafix.com/ Lowest price around $650 No monthly service charge

I can confirm the bears are fine - I have seen many of them (also the Wittingham ones) and they all left me alone (kind of)... I also ditto the personal location device. Very often the biggest 'enemy' in caching - especially in the winter - for me is no cellphone reception. Two winters ago I slipped on black ice on a rock while crossing a stream. I was able to limp back to the car (which was about 2 miles away) - but had I not been: there was no cell-reception in the area. The only footprints within at least a mile of the spot where mine and the snow that I made them in was over 1 week old. That prompted me to get the location device. I hopefully will never need it - but I learned that my cellphone is useless in most of my real fun caching adventures (read: the ones far off the beaten track).... If it warms up a little towards the weekend I might just try for more snow and black ice

For me it's 2. Last time I was out for a whole day was 3 weeks ago... If it wasn't for work I'd go caching in the south in the winter and come back here in Spring. I don't mind the heat - bring on the humidity - but the cold - boy that fireplace next to my sofa looks very nice.... On the other hand I am starting to get itchy feet - and I love all the great WMAs in NJ - so I'll back back over soon
-
Thanks for all the wishes - I hope to cross path with each of you soon again. I also want to thank all the hiders who's caches I had the privilege of finding. Without you this great hobby would not exist.

Is the Garmin Topo (100K) map worth getting?
geobernd replied to Maui19's topic in GPS technology and devices
I find the 100K topos very useful for caching in rough terrain - especially for bushwhacking . I would love to get 24k for the areas I frequently go to but the 100k helped me so far to avoid any major surprises with large backtracking when bushwhacking (e.g. cliffs, major streams, etc.). They don't have much in terms of roads or trails - but who needs roads or trails when carrying a GPS -
Happy Holidays to you too - and to everyone here. Very cool greetings

Excellent - can't wait (for the bears of course)!!
-
Congratulations The man is a caching machine in camouflage.
-
Excellent - looking forward to it as a missed last years.... Re: re-populating: Do you mean you will be placing a lot of new bears around existing caches or will you be placing new caches around existing bears

Thanks for taking them all - I was partially following your footsteps today and stayed tick free (not counting the 5-10 that I brushed off my pant legs throughout the day). Tick check at home revealed tick free all around ... Somehow that DEET is working...

Congratulations!!!! And nice to have met you at Pirates!

Congratulations to Team Mumu for #900 on the 9th at Rested Here ... Now onward to the big 000

Those office hours put a big damper on my ability to help as well. As I work in NYC I have no chance of getting there Monday-Friday during the posted hours... Bummer...
-
I am sorry to hear this news... I have never had the chance to meet Bill but I have done most of his caches... Some in the rain - some in sunshine - all with fun.... Please count me in on any adoption initiative (I have no caches in Harriman at this time and live only 20 minutes away...)....
-
The best one of mine so far: http://www.geocaching.com/seek/log.aspx?LU...fd-b3069f90b8d0 (I now go there almost every night to see if I can find bigfoot ) That was actually this cachers last find - I can only guess why.....
-
Congratulations! It was nice to be able to cache with you on some of those....
-
CONGRATULATIONS!!! Amazing! Glad to have met you a couple of times - may our path cross again (maybe before you reach 10000 )

I had similar concerns about the Garmin Mounts. First tried the bean bag but it flew off the dash at least 1-2 times each trip (I know - it's the way I drive).... I then used the temporary mounting disk - but it doesn't stand up well in heat... The good thing is that there is absolutely no sign that they where ever on the dash... I found http://www.proclipusa.com and now have one of these in each of my cars, attached to it is the Germain mount with the permanent disk. Works like a charm - doesn't require drilling.... Two friends bought them too (making four different brand vehicle I know of) and they all fit well and tight...
