  1. Thanks, I am fortunate that you'all still remember the old gear.
  2. I would like to remove all waypoint and GC data from the GPS. How do I do this?
  3. The Wiki page for this FAQ is not there. Is there another link?
  4. That was my first thought too, because the sub-title doesn't show up on the mobile version of the Groundspeak forums. For anyone else who can't see it, the model of charger the OP is talking about is the BT-C3400. As for these chargers, you need to pay attention to which version you're buying. I bought a BT-C3100 v2.2, which I understand is exactly the same as a BT-C3400 v3.1, just with a different model number. However, if you got a BT-C3100 v2.1, you're getting a slightly older version that has some known issues. Watch for that. The Ebay listing you linked to specifically says it's v3.1, so that should be safe. I've been happy with my BT-C3100 v2.2. I bought some brand new Eneloop Pros at the same time and have only charged them in this charger to give them the best chance at a long life, and they've worked well in my Oregon 600. I also tried refreshing some older Duracell rechargeables in the BT-C3100, and they seem to hold more charge than they did before when they were charged using a dumb charger. I use these in my older trusty Oregon 450 for OpenStreetMap data collection. The features I like most about the charger are the refresh function and the ability to control at what rate (current) you charge the batteries. I read lots of reviews before going ahead, and it seems like lots of battery aficionados (who would have thought there was such a thing!) liked it, so that was good enough for me. Thanks for the explanation on the mobile version of the forum. I'll try to remember that. I take it that Eneloop Pros are a good bet also? Seems to be batteries in a lot of things around the house.
  5. The name of the charger is in the title but here is a link: http://www.ebay.com/itm/331325504524#shpCntId
  6. I was wondering what the consensus on this charger is. The specs look amazing and someone I know was the one who mentioned it and the YTs on it seems to be very complimentary. Is there a downside? or is there something better?
  7. I am trying to download some tracks to Strava.com , but I keep getting a "Improperly formatted data" error. When I do manage to download a track that I have archived in my Colorado 300, it shows me starting at a place where I only visited once, years ago in the Arctic, Canada. So I get this leg length from Saglek to B.C. What can I do to get rid of the old trip or waypoint? and What am I doing wrong with formatting my tracks?
  8. I am trying to put my day's outing on Google maps. I did it a couple of years ago but forgot how. I am using http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ I turned on my GPS (Colorado 300) at the start of my trek and turned it off at the end. When I got home I opened up the Colorado icon and went Garmin/GPX/Current/ and grabbed Current GPX which I entered into http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ and then asked it to plot it. It returned with the message "No valid GPS data detected!" What am I doing wrong?
  9. Hi LWM, I used to live in Churchill Falls so I know the feeling. Here is another way to deal with it. It's a bit cumbersome in some ways but it may be what I will be trying. You can use the regular batteries till they die, keeping the backaup battery in a warm pocket and then plug it in to extend the range. I looked on ebay with this search and there are a number of choices "backup battery for gps" http://www.ebay.com/itm/2000mAh-external-backup-battery-MP3-MP4-PSP-GPS-iphone-3G-4G-4S-iPod-Blue-/170726590828?pt=US_Tablet_Accessories&hash=item27c019096c#ht_4829wt_1770
  10. Has anyone tried Powerex batteries? They are slightly fatter than regular AAs and are listed as 2700 MAH. My geek buddy loves them.
  11. Hi, I replaced the battery in my Nuvi 660 and damaged the ribbon connector that goes from the flip out antenna to the unit. Where can I find this part? Is it difficult to replace?
  12. My Nuvi battery is toast and I have a new one ordered from eBay but I would like to get a backup one that I can plug into the port for when the battery dies. Any suggestions?
  13. Or... you could have it pull all of the sats positions live from the web... http://www.nstb.tc.faa.gov/incoming/Waas_SV_Status.txt Hmm... I haven't had FizzyCalc use networking to keep it simple, but I think I'll put out a new tool to locate the WAAS satellites. It'll give me a chance to try Python package deployment... Now that the WAAS satellite situation has settled down any chance for an update to FizzyCalc to handle the current location of the WAAS birds? Image above represents the broadcast footprints of the geostationary satellites in December 2010. Season's Greetings, That's neat, Thanks!
  14. I tried to get the rubber suction plate off my GPS window mount, so I could put a new one on but it seemed like I would break it, so how is it supposed to come off ? Is there a way to renew it? In other words, it has started to pop off the window regularly, so aside from gluing it on the window, is there a way to fix it ?
  15. Set it for WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) It makes the GPS more accurate. Basically a # of ground stations receive positioning signals from the GPS satellites, figure out the error and transmit it to the WAAS birds (satellites) who send it out to the people with WAAS turned on. You can do a Wiki on it. Lots of info and a thread not long ago was very illuminating.
  16. I dragged the unzipped Pocker Query into Garmin/GPX/current file When I crank up the Colorado 300 it doesn't show the caches. What did I do wrong?
  17. http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-airplane-m...-cell-phone.htm http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_mode On my ipod touch it turns off the ability to surf the net, or make calls for instance on Skype.
  18. Why is that a "nuisance"? When the batteries get low...STOP...save track...change batteries...turn on...start new track log. "Stitch/combine" when you get home on the computer. Some folks, such as myself, have the sounds turned off to not disturb any wildlife we might encounter (including the trail hikers). So, knowing exactly when the batteries die is more an art form when the alert is disabled which means you can end up losing a large section of trail tracking making the effort useless. So to answer the Op's question on battery life... with the features I need (or want) enabled, 10 hours is my minimum. If I can achieve that by purchasing the Lithium x8's, then so be it. Fortunately, with the PN-60, this endurance has increased by a significant amount. More than 10 hours. Wow. So how much more than the previous GPS? Which was your previous GPS? Personally the main reason I bought a second GPS was to have a track record of my sailing. I have a Hobie Tiger and I love to see how fast and where I went.
  19. No. There's no photovoltaic technology that delivers the current needed to charge GPS batteries quickly enough in anything near a size you could actually integrate into a handheld GPS. Besides - where would you put the panel? You need it pointed at the sun, and that sorta tends to be where the screen is for the user to read. The handheld GPS just got a whole lot bigger than the largest of automotive units! I like the other guy's idea -- put the solar panel on your hat. Just stay out from under the trees. http://www.treehugger.com/files/2008/06/so...indarra-dtx.php http://www.thesolarguide.com/solar-power-u...r-clothing.aspx
  20. Did you try changing the battery type in the prefs or setup section. I would guess from what you said that a NiCad would be a closer profile as they are a flatter discharge profile. Mine doesn't have NiCad. it has Alky, Li, and NiMH.
  21. Thanks for the NiZn suggestion. First I heard of them. Found an interesting article on them; http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/09/powerge...y-some-cells-w/ !.6 volts....
  22. Lee, Your question is still rather vague. What do you mean by battery runtime? Do you mean if you turn on the gps with the default settings and leave it in the corner how long will the same set of batteries last? You see every unit has a multitude of options. Each option uses varying amounts of juice. If you never use the anchor drag option your runtime will be better. It depends on how you use the thing. For instance I have heard that certain option on certain models were energy pigs in the past but newer designs have eliminated the issue. Everybody has their favourite options when they geocache so their mileage will vary. What has been replied is that manufacturers put #s in their specs as to how long batteries will last. These numbers (in my opinion based on experience with two GPS units and a multitude of other electronic units ) are at best a lousy, overinflated guess. It depends on a number of things that you have not included in your question. The problem is that manufacturers will claim a long battery life so you will buy based on that. The worst manufacturers will lie the most. Rather than beat around the bush tell us what units you are talking about so people can tell you their mileage. A number of things will affect mileage with batteries ie, back lighting, electronic compass etc. This topic has been beat to death with a dizzying # of threads. You are lucky to get any replies.
  23. Maybe complain to Apple. There is a place to register complaints. Maybe they are on summer vacation... Seriously. Have you got the latest OS? Did you try deleting it from the Touch and then resynching it. (I am doing the usual troubleshooting regime)
  24. I carry a # of spare rechargeable batteries. They're cheap as dirt on eBay... Here are some samples http://cgi.ebay.ca/4pcs-AA-2600mAh-Ni-MH-R...=item4aa49014a0 Get another charger on there cheap as dirt also... http://cgi.ebay.ca/6-Channels-AA-AAA-Batte...=item563f6e9787 All you're doing here is cutting out the middle man Walmart.
