  1. I agree. I always check both geocaching.com and atlasquest.com for caches and letterboxes in an area I'll be visiting, so we can log both at the same time. Many times there are caches and letterboxes hidden within close proximety to each other, which can be a good thing and a bad thing... there is one example not far from here where cachers are signing the log in a letterbox nearby and leaving trade items/geocoins/travel bugs in it... luckily the stamp is still there and hasn't been traded for. We also found one letterbox recently that had written on it in large bold letters: LETTERBOX. NOT TRASH, NOT CACHE. I thought that was a good idea and maybe all letterboxes should be labled as such and vice versa.
  2. does this mean I should forget about putting a cache on my business property. I was thinking of doing so since it seems like all the caches I have come across so far are large caches you need to bushwack to get to and urban micros. I figured I could put an large urban cache up that people could get to when they didn't want to drive 30 minutes to a new one or get wet looking for one (we have flooding in Iowa). My property has no historical significance, and the view does not inspire one to write poetry. Should I axe it? I don't think you should axe your idea. I have seen several caches placed at cachers' own businesses and I see nothing wrong with it. Most tell you to stop in and say hello if you happen by the cache during office hours. It's a great way to meet fellow cachers and maybe get some info about other local caches, especially if it's in an area you aren't familiar with. If I had somewhere to put one near my office, I would. I say go for it.
  3. An owl we spotted recently, it was huge with a wingspan of about 5-6 ft.
  4. Wow, that is awesome. My kinda place! I too was astounded by the pricetag. You know what I could do with that 10M? That's a lot of swag! LOL Seriously it seems like something out of a movie... those are some very lucky kids, to get to live in a puzzle-house! Too cool.
  5. Girl you know stampers like us appreciate hand made cards!!! Like everyone else said I would snap them up.... Ok, I agree you need to start your own geo-card business!!! You go Beth!!
  6. Bumping old thread to the top.... I would love to make some Myspace geo-friends. If you send me a friend request, let me know you're a cacher. My page: www.myspace.com/merediths_place
  7. Forgive me if this has been discussed recently, but I didn't see it anywhere. I need a bit of advice from you seasoned cachers/travelers. We will be flying to Utah next month and with all the heightened security nowadays, I'm wondering if I should just pack my GPSr, etc in my checked luggage. I would really rather have it with me in my carryon, but don't want to get stopped and searched either. Am I being paranoid? Anyone have any hints/tips/stories to share? Thanks in advance!
  8. How about: Old Geocachers never die, they just run out of cache. Here's my favorite: Geocachers do it in the woods....
  9. Hi Matt, I just wanted to add that since I replied to you last about the yellow Garmin, I did return it and upgraded to the gray eTrex Legend HCx because it has a basemap feature and supposedly that's one thing you are supposed to have. Still not sure why, but that's what I was told! Personally I can't tell any difference. LOL Good luck!
  10. I'm still fairly new to caching, but one valuable lesson I learned from reading the book 'A Complete Idiot's Guide to Geocaching' (yup, that's me, a complete idiot!) was that you cannot rely on the arrow on the GPSr to tell you which way to go when you are going slow or standing still. This is called 'loose bearings' and according to what I read, you have to be moving at least 4mph for that arrow to be accurate. So when you're getting close, forget that arrow and instead focus on the distance. Walk until it gets smaller... if it starts growing, turn and start walking another direction. Soon you'll be able to narrow the search area down. That tiny bit of info has helped me tremendously! Good luck and don't give up!
  11. LOL - you ppl are cracking me up with some of these answers! One thing I have on my side is that my husband actually IS a land surveyor... so when we're out in his truck with the name of his business on the side, walking around with GPSr's, no one thinks anything of it! PS.. I love the 'doing research on poisonous snakes' idea. I'll have to try that!
  12. One thing we do, if we're parked near the cache, is to open the back of the SUV and go through the cache there. It just looks like you're getting something out of the back of the car and doesn't look suspicious. Also, for micros where there are muggles around, my 11-year-old son has perfected the 'yawn and stretch' maneuver, hiding it back in it's spot without looking suspicious!
  13. I did that but they are not showing up in my gallery.... when I view my profile and click on the gallery tab, it says "there are no images in the gallery" (in red writing)
  14. Can someone please tell me how to create a gallery? I cannot find anything about it anywhere. I can upload pics to individual logs, but I want to know how to upload pics into the gallery on my profile. Maybe I'm just overlooking it. Thanks!
  15. Hi Matt, I'm new too, less than a couple weeks. I bought a yellow Garmin eTrex handheld at Walmart for $199 plus tax. It has everything you're looking for... color, uses AA batteries, has a USB cable so you can download coordinates. I love mine, but then again I'm new and don't know any better! They had a cheaper version that was $99 but not color and no USB, so I didn't want that one. They also had a couple that were more expensive. I'm told you can also find these at sporting goods stores, but we had no luck with places like Circuit City, Radio Shak, etc... the people there didn't even know what I was talking about. So we ended up finding them at good ole' Wally World! Have fun and good luck!
