  1. There are a lot of threads asking about other terms. That's plenty of reading, but you still may not find a definitive list. Are you trying to make T-shirts or stickers or something, and the printer (especially Cafepress!) refuses to allow what they've decided is "copyrighted material"? If so, change the phrase. One option is to use the term "people", as in "I tried to hunt that Geocache, but there were too may people!" It's a card game. Though Warner Bros don't "own" the term as such, they do have the rights in print. I was going to use "Muggle-cards" and "Muggle-tokens". Ah, so we come up with a new term for "non cachers", get it into common use, you create a card game using it, then trademark the term to protect your intellectual property, and we're back to square one Hahahaha, well that's not what I was thinking, but I guess if the game became super successful and I turned greedy, sure Though worth noting it's not JK Rowling, the author of Harry Potter, who has trademarked the term.

  3. No it doesn't it's a Jazz term that has been in use for about 100 years : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muggles_(recording) See my links above. Warner Bros owns it. I don't know if it has to be situational though, as in "muggles" referring to non-wizards is a no-go but "muggles" referring to non-geocachers is OK. But I doubt they accept the latter either as it's clear where the term is borrowed from. Either way, I'm looking for alternatives to use "Non-geocachers" just doesn't sound as appealing
  4. Certainly, HHL Trademark registration belonging to Warner Bros: https://trademarks.justia.com/856/07/muggle-85607151.html Reddit thread on the subject: https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.reddit.com/r/legaladvice/comments/212utt/usa_does_jk_rowling_own_the_word_muggle/
  5. I'm in a curious situation. Or perhaps not so curious, come to think of it. The term "muggle" is trademarked. As we all know, it belongs to the Harry Potter universe describing someone who isn't a wizard or witch. In geocaching, it refers to someone not aware of geocaching. For commercial purposes, this word can't be legally used. As far as I know, geocaching.com doesn't officially. So my question is: is there an actual English term that describes this, or is there a less known alternative that could be used instead, which would still make sense to geocachers? Thanks for any help
  6. You could make a nice puzzle cache with that. By following the maze one could count up the number of "finds" and even "dnfs" for several different cache types then plug those numbers into a set of lat/long coordinates. Yes! That idea will work well. A fun puzzle for the children. Thank you for thinking about the children. Love that idea! And I agree, there should be more puzzles like that with kids in mind.
  7. Alright maybe not mega, but still So this is what I do when I'm bored. Please don't judge me
  8. I'm brainstorming activites for kids. Not outdoor activities like geocaching itself, but geocaching-themed activities on paper. So far I have the following: Simple quiz Color-in drawings of caching-related images Basic maze, with cache icons here and there to find along the way Match the cache icon with a description of the cache type Drawing of a geocacher and different equipment next to him/her (GPS, hiking pole, batteries, etc.) - circle the ones that are relevant and explain why they might be useful to a geocacher. "Find five faults" with two geocaching-related images where one has been altered in places (stuff missing/added) Any other ideas?
  9. I'm looking for interesting Youtube channels about geocaching. Anyone have any favorites?
  10. Hi! I have a short document (around 250 sentences) that I need translated from English to German, and I was hoping someone here might be able to help I'm looking for someone with a good sense of spelling/grammar. It's for a geocaching-related project and I'd be happy to tell you more in a private message if you're interested. Thanks in advance!
  11. If you want to advertise something, contact Groundspeak to purchase advertising space from them. This is a for profit, private business and there is no reason they should even consider offering free space to a commercial endeavor. BTW, if you know there is such a policy, why do you post your advertisement? Is this thread an advertisement? You know that is not what I was referring to. I was asking why you posted your advertisement that the moderator removed if you knew there is a policy against commercial postings. I didn't. I posted, it was removed, no hard feelings because the policy makes sense. Then I posted this thread as a suggestion AFTER I learned about it

This is a for profit, private business and there is no reason they should even consider offering free space to a commercial endeavor. BTW, if you know there is such a policy, why do you post your advertisement? Is this thread an advertisement? No. I'm saying I know I can't, but that I would be interested in a place where people could. And as someone said above, that way those who don't want to see it can also avoid it. Win-win. Good point about banner ads though, I guess that's a strong factor for Groundspeak not to want a forum for it. On the other hand, I doubt a subforum would seriously make a difference in terms of paid ads. Serious businesses still would want to (and have to, if they want to attract more than a few customers) pay for banners were a lot of people will actually see them
  13. I know there's a policy against posts promoting something, which is fair enough But I can imagine there are a lot of people out there who would like to announce stuff - from geocaching books to podcasts to magazines to blogs to opening of stores/shops, and more. Wouldn't it be a good idea to have a subforum for that? I'm guessing there are at least some people who would like to keep an eye on such a forum to discover new stuff that might interest them
  14. L0ne R, I now follow you and have invited Ontariocacher to pin to the board. Perhaps you can share the best stuff from your many geocacher boards? Jon-Paul, there seems to be many with similar names. I can't find you. Can you send your profile link and I will start following you and invite younto the board St.Matthew, more and more starts to come, so send a link to our profile andbI van add you to the board as well. That way we can make gc big on pinterrest
  15. I have created a board on Pinterest called Geocaching Around the World: http://pinterest.com/jozii89/geocaching-around-the-world/ Now I'm looking for people who want to contribute My idea is that anyone who wants to can join in and together we make a Pinterest board with all kinds of geocaching-related stuff. Photos that you find online, pictures from your own trips, links to cool and related products, links to interesting geocaching sites, etc. So far the board is basically empty, but I'll continue to pin to it. If you want in, write your Pinterest name here and I'll start following you and add you as a contributor to the board
  16. I've seen many ways of bringing the details of caches (coordinates, hints, descriptions, photos, etc.) to the field. Some have GPS'es with all that info stored in them, others simply print the cache pages, and some write stuff down by hand from the screen. I've also seen some creative solutions, for example one guy who printed like a small booklet and even had a "table of content" on the first page. And one cacher who had a VERY organized logbook where it was determined what page the cache details would be written on based on where in the world the cache was located. So how do you do it? If you have pictures of your "system", that would be cool too
  17. Thanks for the comments I have made updates. Regarding the quizzes, that's something I too would have liked, but that is not likely to be added because of the design. Doesn't work.
  18. Some of those sound like the kind of articles I've seen on Groundspeak's blog and other hobby blogs. But I think you need to decide what you're going to focus on. When I check the "extensive section for beginner" and find errors and bad advice, it doesn't give me confidence in the reliability of the other content. It will be extensive, and it will be without flaws But the focus is the more unique content. Sure, others might have the same type, but I'm going for a more visual presentation and I'm sure no one else has exactly the same stuff Just wait and see. It will be even more awesome
  19. @niraD: We're still focusing too much on the "basic" content in this discussion. This is NOT supposed to be another site like those three you linked to, or the Groundspeak sites. Where else can you find an interview about the tribute to the world's first cache, a story about caching among landmines, a 100-point checklist, an interview with a geodog, creative trackables, the geocaching rank, quizzes, etc.? Those are the unique articles. The ones with "problems" (many points that are brought up here aren't even entirely wrong, just poorly phrased from my side, and I'm fixing everything as it's mentioned ) are those that resemble the stuff found on other sites like those you linked to. I will be posting a lot less of those. "Awesome" is in my opinion a lot better than "complete" and the site is not supposed to be taken that seriously. It's fun. It's entertainment. Like said before, if you have a better suggestion I'm all ears. I'm not going to change the name as billion times, but am always open to suggestions
  20. @tozainamboku: Whoops! I hade removed the "rule" about it, but not the paragraph below it that referred to the rule that I had already removed Fixed! @L0ne R: I was considering that, but wanted to push for people to sign up for the newsletter instead. But since the newsletter is also published as a post, perhaps doing both will work? However, for now I'm posting a bunch of articles at once to build a good base, so if I add it, I will do it later when posting is not so frequent any longer.
  21. I just spent some money on this site. First of all, I thought long and hard about the name. As commented above, Complete Geocaching refers to something too wide, and any successful website needs a more narrow but good focus. The focus of this website is intented to be unique, high-quality, awesome stuff that you won't find elsewhere. Something that goes a lot deeper than beginner's guides and general posts. Thus, the domain awesomegeocaching.com has been registered (completegeocaching.com and any previous links will redirect automatically). A slightly corny name perhaps, but it feels and sounds a lot better to me. If someone has a better suggestion, I'm all ears Second, there are now NO ADS WHATSOEVER! An ads site is not at all what I want to run and I've understood from this thread that it can mean a lot to people and their impression of the site. So now they are gone entirely
  22. Point taken regarding basically re-written content that is already available on geocaching.com. I want to site to (in the long run) be "complete", which includes a lot of basic articles like those for beginners. But, the main focus should be a site with highly unique content that you won't find anywhere else. You've already seen this with the interviews, quizzes, etc. that go much deeper. I want it to be very unique so you'll see a lot more of that, trust me Regarding ads, I just learned something new. I have been using WordPress for years and I knew that the occassional ad might pop up every now and then, but it's very rare since they spread it out across the millions of blogs they have. I'm not sure if they have increased the ads now. I will, though look into paying for having them removed, as BoredRoom linked to above. @bflentje and Pup Patrol: I hope you'll keep visit and enjoy the more unique articles After all, you can choose what you read. @Keystone: I will rephrase the quiz. @caughtatwork: I take note of everything written here and will apply most of it on the site, but I can already say that that's one thing that unfortunately won't change. It will be a geocaching.com-specific site, with potentially an article or two about alternative sites in the future. Thanks again for all the feedback
  23. I truly appreciate all the feedback! I have fixed everything mentioned and made some changes @BoredRoom: Wordpress, which is the platform I use, has such a Google ad feature. However, it is and always has been disabled on this website. If they have appeared anyway it sounds like a bug, but I haven't seen them myself and I hope they will never appear again. @The A-Team: Great comment! Like I said, I've fixed it all. Regarding spelling, I have stumbled upon several embarassing mistakes myself and I will make a thorugh spell-check of all articles in the near future. If you see any others, please let me know The 3rd Q&A is the same as the second, but in Swedish. Of course the Swedish one wasn't intened there. I have removed it. And finally, regarding the blog format, I experimented a lot before setteling for this theme. It would be ideal if pages rather than blog posts were seen on the front page, but that's not the case. The page menu at the top of the site should solve it, but perhaps it's still not clear enough? It has been my aim for the front page to be an ocean of articles, very mixed and in no particular order, because it's fun to browse. But it's also intended to be divided very clearly and articles should be easily found using the top navigation bar based on what type of stuff you're looking for (Beginners, Experienced, Interviews, etc.). Perhaps it was a bad idea? Suggestions? @niraD: I have changed it to refer to "family friendly" instead
  24. Hi all! Thanks for the comments It's far from "complete" yet, but it's not supposed to be. I'm adding more stuff all the time and have plenty planned @BoredRoom: I appreciate the comment but that's not at all what it is. All material is my own (unless otherwise stated), both texts and photos, and there are no ads anywhere! @niraD: There are rules against these things (or have been in the past, I will double check it) in the geocaching.com guidelines, but many are not obeyed. Especially that of not having commercial stuff. The first "newsletter" is out which summarizes things: http://completegeocaching.com/2012/07/05/newsletter-1/
