  1. April 16th for one of mine, should go live in the next few days
  2. Well done to nick and his colleagues. Not just for the rescue, but if what has been said about the party being abusive is true, then also for resisting the urge to do the gene pool a favour and turning around and leaving.
  3. OK, now that the equation is correctly displayed, my ears have stopped bleeding. It also gives me an idea for a cache
  4. Ok, I've got South West, That appears to cover Avon, Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Somerset & Dorset, so, let me know what's happening if thats your area
  5. I agree with Stu & Sarah, the event should be easy to get to. There are cachers who cannot walk that far, and it could be a rael pain for those with kids, the younger the kids, the larger the truck required for all those accessories, like nappies, prams, gags etc.
  6. I'm up for home Counties & south West, it's my main focus for caching at the moment
  7. NO ONE Expects the Spanish Inquisition
  8. I I I I I I ME ME ME ME ME ME ME , IIIII Bet I IIII can eat the most Spam
  9. Well Done John, you old tricenturion you
  10. Hate to do this, but all the arguments can be found Here It got quite nasty from time to time too.
  11. I I I I me me me me me , I I I I I Can batter the most trolls in 24 hours, I I I I can then finish off by eating the most cheese in 10 minutes. I I I I should then break the world projectile vommiting record
  12. No but you never see them on this forum banging on about how many caches they have set. What IS the most number of caches placed by one person in 24 hours??? No, but they do post congratulations to everyone who passes a milestone. Talking of numbers, how many days? reminds me of a topic posted recently
  13. Edited because I don't want to be responsible for making the UK forum like some others.
  14. two of my top three so far are puzzle caches,: Little Cemetery Safari: I've said it before, most inventive cache Squirrels nest: Just the cutest thing ever (Sorry Seasider, it just pips your original) Hermits Hideaway: most awesome location (sadly archived awaiting regrowth)
  15. Well, I don't know about advice, but count me in as an attendee. An event cache listed on GC.com is always a good idea, and perhaps a handful of new caches for the event, perhaps organise a couple of other locals to help with that. I look forward to it already, plus I have a bonio for Chester for his excellent caches.
  16. As there are several numbers related threads here that are receiving comments about numbers caching in general rather than their more specific topics, I have decided to start this thread, with a look at why some of us are numbers cachers, and in particular myself. First lets start with a question: Who are geocachers? OK, so this is going to be a massive generalisation, but a very large number of cachers have a background in IT. Think about the average age of cachers, mostly over 30, now those of you over 30 think back to your school days. Remember the computer geeks? Yep that's me, great with a keyboard and BASIC interpreter, useless at sports. Good marks, doing well in all subjects, except sports. Think back again, who were the popular kids? Yup, the ones who were good at sports, usually football. Who were teased and bullied? Right again, the geeky swots. Now, I was usually part of the teased and bullied sector, but I had a couple of tastes of being closer to the top and liked it. Had I been any good at football, I would have been able to stay there. I used to wonder what I could do, I could hike 25 miles overnight with full camping pack, I could maintain around 30mph on a racing bike over a 15 mile track, but I couldn't place that ball in the back of the net. So, where does that leave me so far? Fit, but rubbish at the sports that matter. What happens next? I join the RAF, where I am still fit, but again not where it matters. You have to be able to run 1.5 miles in under 11 minutes, i make it in 10:53, almost last. OK, so I passed, but the PTIs still think I'm unfit and act accordingly (it can be just like the movies in some ways). I think to myself "give me a racing bike and I'll make you see how fit I am". Eventually, I take up hot rod racing, on grass track ovals, I manage to be challenger for class champion after just 2 seasons, I race from the back of the grid (Handicap based on points earned) with a red roof. I'm looked up to by some racers, cheered on by some supporters. It feels great, at last a sport I'm good at that matters to someone, and people pay to come see the races too. Sadly I had to give up due to costs. People may pay to see the racing but the drivers don't get any. After I leave the RAF, I do a couple of temporary jobs where I am rewarded and praised for working harder faster for longer, it feels good to be in that position. Eventually, I start working for my last employer, and find that friendly competition at work is not only a bit of fun, but can be profitable. I eventually set the unbroken company record for consecutive 12 hour shifts at 72 days non stop. I also work hard on the quality and remain top of the quality tables for my entire time with the company. With my reputation for quality and hard work, I am finally rewarded with an offer of the position of trainer with an affiliated company. Again, it feels good. So where am I now? I've found a sport that I'm good at, can't afford, but I like being good at a sport on a competitive level. I've earned a better Job through hard work and dedication, I like that I'm good at that too. So, I find Geocaching, looks fun, I'll give that a try. for six months, I plod along, racking up 60 caches or so. Then I get invited to a meeting of local cachers. I'm introduced to GCUK, and given pointers on good software to use for caching. During the evening, someone mentions a guy called Seasider, "Who's he?" I ask. I'm told he is the UK No.1, with over a 1000 finds. I'm awe struck, how many? I think to myself. At this point, I had just beaten my own personal best of 4 in a day with a whopping 6 in one day. When I get home, I check out GCUK & download the software recommended. Wow, I've found a site with league tables and stats breakdowns, this is really cool. I also find that the highest average per trip is 36!! Although, it's a single trip on a sock puppet ID by two guys who no one has heard of since. "It's not possible" I think to myself, 36 in one day, nah! So, I have a look at their route, hey, they're near me, I'll go do some of those, might get me a good run at my first 100. I get an early start and before I know it, it's midday, and I've done over 25 caches, wow, it is possible I think to myself, so I keep going till dark. at the end of the day, I've managed 34 total, and go home with sore legs and blisters. The next day, I log all my finds and note I've passed the 100 mark during that day. over the next few days, I'm a caching lunatic, really bitten with the bug now that I can see I can do more than 4 in a day. I think nothing of the the 34, as far as I knew, the record was 36, and I was only out to see if I could get close. A week later I'm at another caching meet and everyone is congratulating me, it seems my day was common knowledge. I ask someone I know what all the pats on the back are for, and he tells me that I had broken the record, it's all over the forums. Think back a few years, How does that little no good at sports geek inside me feel now? Yeah, you got it, now maybe you can see why I'm a numbers man and proud of it. To set the record straight: I never knock anyone for the way in which they approach caching with the exception of the careless and thoughtless, who potentially can ruin it for others by destroying the countryside. I have never posted any topics bragging about my achievements, I have merely thanked those who have congratulated me in topics others have started about my achievements. I always put my money where my mouth is. I have mentioned only one planned record shot, which I called off last week when England lost at the football the night before, and I didn't want to be in London with the city full of drunken football fans upset about the result. I will be rescheduling that shot for a weekend soon. Most sports have those who don't do it competitively in some way, golf or fishing for instance, but those who don't do in the pro tour don't knock those that do, for going after the high (or low) scores or the big fish. The only reason there are so many numbers topics right now is its the time of year for long caching days, a lot of milestones will be passed and records broken. Plus, eveytime someone posts a comment, positive or negative, the post moves to the top. Those complaining about the topics are actually propagating them! Please, if you don't like the numbers game, fine, don't do it, you don't even have to log your finds here, I won't make you, and I won't complain about you. It's your experience, do it your own way, but please, return the courtesy and let me do it my way too, for the sake of that 12 year old computer geek that got his lunch money stolen.
  17. Hey, what's the prize? I did 52 in London in less than 24 hours. Check my logs for may 21st and 22nd. (and FWIW, although I'not inexperienced, it was without guidance, and those 52 caches were the only caches I've ever done in the UK, and I didn't know my way around. Heck, people even had trouble understanding my accent...) The challenge referred to is for outside London, this has long been seperated as two distinct records, which is why I haven't touched london yet, not wanting to spoil the territory.
  18. Sounds like you are suggesting a pacemaker like in athletics but with somebody who knows the course. I can understand a two man team cracking the 50 mark. I quickly picked up 3 of Chesters this morning and went past five UC's in a matter of minutes, That would have been 8 in under an hour. tell me about it, when I set the 39, I went past all of the UCs doing chesters set. I had done them all a few weeks ago, when there were only them in the centre of Oxford. Had I been able to get a reliable lock, I could also have added some during the dark hours
  19. You're not wrong humphrey, but we all agreed the rules of COTM a while ago, to keep it simple. Deego who kindly runs the competition doesn't have a vast ammount of time on his hands, so to keep it simple, it was agreed to go 10 points per find, Travel Bugs included, and 20 points for a placing, or TB released (your own not someone else's) If it was difficulty/terrain dependant, we'd all be getting lathered up about inconsistencies in ratings and incorrectly listed multi's etc. Besides, there aren't that many Drive bys, beleive me. Also to get to the top of that leader board with any kind of consistency, you have to hit every cache regardless, although all day multi's do get skipped, but that's a whole other thread.
  20. I'd be happy to tell you all about it, mail me with what format you have in mind, and I'll get working on it.
  21. Congrats, the Quadricenturion list on the HOF seems to be getting crowded this week
  22. yep 50 is possible, but only 25 should be in oxford, then it's a trip to bracknell & ascot for another 18 quick ones, then take your pick for the other 7+. Only thing is, most of the usual suspects have already done most of the caches in Oxford, so it wouldn't count going back to them. I predict that the 50 barrier will be broken by an inexperienced cacher under the guidance for someone like Simply Paul.
