  1. A new one for the ever-expanding list: Missing Evidence (Jim Snow Mystery Book 2), by Rex Kusler The Horstmann brothers, Todd and Gary, both medical doctors in the small town of Wilkie, Nevada like to hunt for geocaches on Friday nights. But one Friday night, younger brother Todd sets out alone and doesn’t come home. His body is discovered near the site of the geocache—missing an important part. The entire town is terrified at the prospect of a serial killer on the loose. But with half a dozen suspects, no one knows who it could be. Jim Snow travels the two hundred and fifty miles north to Wilkie to begin the search for leads—and possibly the victim’s missing head.
  2. Well looks like the Stuffed Pinecone cache got fixed to Alabama where it should have been listed--thank you! Now I just have to make my way to Georgia to cache to fulfill my souvenir
  3. Hi Folks-- On a recent caching adventure, I logged a find and got a Georgia Souvenir, only I was not caching in Georgia. The cache is listed in the cache owner's home state, not the next state over where the cache is physically located. I emailed the cache owner, with no response after 2 weeks. Should I mark as needs maintenance? keep waiting?
  4. Thanks to everyone who responded and a quick update... the cache owner has temporarily disabled the cache due to the remains being there. I am still laughing at some of the responses
  5. Occasional lurker. Just posted recently (after searching for any prior similar questions btw) and appreciated ALL the perspectives I got in short order--thanks bunches everybody who answered me! I have found a lot of helpful responses, advice, and ideas while--I'll call it searching for answers--on the Groundspeak forums. In addition to all the good, I've also found several people constantly sniping at each other. The sniping, nitpicking, and personal attacks are really unnecessary here. THAT part I really dislike about forums, and I'd wish they could each agree to disagree and just leave it at that. My 2 cents...
  6. The cache was GC9697, and after re-reading the description, that is EXACTLY where it was. There were lots of hiding places obviously in the rocks there, but none in the ledge except this one where the non-cache-box was. Only other finds--sorry nothing else shocking--were a dime near the edge and getting to see a large-ish lizard. Standing near the edge... hair-raising for sure! If you can do Elephant Hill, you can do this trail--in case anyone is planning on making the trek up there.
  7. Dimensions were about 4x4x6? Somewhat rectangular in shape? Probably closer to 5-6 pounds? Those black boxes are the boxes that are used to transport the cremains from the crematory back to the funeral home... usually they're placed in a nicer urn for permanent resting... but perhaps the family decided not to spend extra money on an urn (or a private grave plot). That sure sounds like cremains.... Sorry you came across that... and it sounds like you treated it with as much respect as possible. It's unfortunate that there weren't better markings before you got to the gravesite. It always makes me wonder what the backstory is... From the geocaching end, I think you've done all you can do... Yepper that was the box size, and it definitely could have been closer to 5 lbs--which is why my hubby weighs our luggage Thanks for all the advice everybody! And the Red Herring comment gave me a good laugh, enough to shake off the creepiness
  8. Actually I thought I had initially found some stashed contraband and was leary of pulling it out--all the Six Feet Unders didn't help me out here. It was heavier than I expected--maybe 2-3 lbs--and pretty dense. Yes it was a black plastic box, definitely ashes in it, I didn't flip it around to see if there was a sticker, but there was a cross with the box...I really didn't want to disturb much further than what I had done already. We respectfully replaced it, apologized for disturbing him, told him he had a beautiful place here, and replaced all the rocks better than when we found it. It will certainly be a cache to remember that's for sure!
  9. I'd pretty much just go on with my life. If someone later logs a find for that cache I would probably go back and look for it. BTW, how do you know that you found someone's remains? It was just a box with a baggie full of ashes, right? Good point, that could have been... what exactly? The contents of their Jeep ash tray?
  10. Quick question since I never in a million years expected this to happen while geocaching on vacation... Went to a remote cache, found the typical cache site in a rock ledge with stones piled in front of hole, moved stones, found a black box with sealed plastic bag sticking out of it...not a cache but someone's remains. Freaked out. Four of us searched for an hour in a limited area and found nothing else. I emailed the cache owner as soon as we got back to maybe take a visit up there to see if his cache is really still there and maybe move it away from the remains. Haven't heard back in several days. Still kinda heebie-jeebied out. What would you do now? Email another cacher/owner in the area who could possibly check out the cache? Continue to wait for owner to reply? (I did note the DNF and the reason in my log)
  11. I second. I have spent wayyyy too much time wandering around the Waymarking.com site...It's a nice wrapper for all the 'the prize is the location' sites. There's a lot more to be added, but what I've seen so far is really impressive. Thanks for another fun thing to fill my spare time and Great Job!
  12. Ok, I have to come clean... Lurker gprgrl here and I have been sitting here laughing and smiling about all the shrinky dink talk. I know I did them when I was little but had completely forgotten about it until tonight!! What a great idea! I, too, shall be on a mission to find shrinky dinks! Thanks for the quick time travel and the smiles!
  13. Thanks jbhooker3--I'm still a newbie and adding the TB number in the logs never occured to me... BUT I just edited and blurred the TB tag on the log photo just in case--something I hadn't thought of until I read your post. Thanks for the reminders everybody!
  14. Thanks for the follow up--I haven't gotten into the Pocket Queries yet and this will give me good reason to check it out!
  15. Dear Geocaching.com-- I have 2 suggestions: 1) An idea for an additional feature would be to save searches, maybe up to 5 zip codes. I often travel to the Boston area and struggle to remember the zip codes I searched for previously. I don't necessarily want/need the same caches to result but storing the zip codes of where I would do a search, i.e. where I tend to travel, would be helpful. 2) Having another way to sort Watch Lists would be really nice. Maybe by state instead of by alpha? I wanted to keep track of the caches we visited in Hawaii, but they are all a ) almost impossible to say, and b ) much harder to remember. If Hawaii was clumped together, and New York clumped together, I could see what's worth watching much faster. Thanks for a great site!
