  1. Blah blah blah to the political stuff. Is the new sat going to help me with the slingshot effect with my Meridian???
  2. I just picked up two 4-packs of Energizer 2500mAh AA batteries for $10 per pack at Walmart. That should be a huge boost over the 1850mAh I was running around with before.
  3. Same here! They beat their ship/arrival date by a week. I think I ordered mine on the 14th....
  4. What is the cache code for the bunnyman one? I don't think I've ever come across it....
  5. My Vista just got shipped today. It will be the backup to my MeriPlat (i.e. receiver non grata).
  6. Yay! My Vista just shipped!!! I ordered mine on 9/14 and just got the email notice. The order status is now DLV (DLV - this item is being delivered). I should have it in 3-7 days which is going to beat their delivery date of 9/30. Yay!
  7. Just ordered mine...should be showing up the 30th! Thanks for the post and the coupon codes!!
  8. I think I'll chime in on this and to give this topic a bump since the SP2 automatic update is set to begin tomorrow, Aug 25. If you have auto update turned on, you will begin to download SP2 tomorrow. I installed the network admin version of SP2 that was released a week or two ago and can confirm that DR does not work. I just found out about the patch that was mentioned in the previous posting by Embra. I'll apply it tonight when I get home. I'll post if have trouble with it.
  9. Interesting how it all comes together. I periodically visit an office I support in Aurora, CO. I don't have a trip in the works at the moment, but I do expect to head back up there before the end of the year. I'd be happy to take the TB. Hwy
  10. I have considered getting a safari vest...many pockets...very marsupial...I like. The problem is that there are many caches here in the DC/Northern VA area that require a good amount of stealth. Walking around with one of those things on you will only draw eyeballs towards you. People might even point! I shiver at the thought. I think internal pockets are the better way to go.
  11. I'd like to find a cache where you can trade your GPSr!! On the other hand...a cache like that would just fill up with Etrex Yellows, Gekos, and that crappy new line from Magellan. Eh...forget I even mentioned this.
  12. Depends if I decide to cache by foot or car. If I'm in hiking mood, I will plan my route a bit to allow me to visit as many caches as I can in a sensible order. If I'm in the car, I just punch up the nearest cache and go!
  13. I honestly think you shouldn't confuse having the same type of something with having the same thing.
  14. I've been reading up on this issue on the Yahoo group. Someone there has figured out the issue. There seems to be a negative interaction between DR and v5.35. I'll post it here because I think everyone needs to know about this. Suffice it to say, I'm rolling back to v5.12 when I get home. > hao tang wrote: > Direct Route map initialization/Route > calculation + V5.35, remove the last Position > reference(maybe Ephemeris Data too), which is very > important for data acquisition for GPS, without them, > GPS init is just like a cold reboot, plus, if drive > around during the initialization, It will take much > longer period. > When the satellites try to acquire a lock they > need to rely on both Almanac and Ephemeris Data. > Ephemeris Data is broadcast by satellites every 30 > seconds, If GPS is moving during initialization, it > may lost the connection when download Ephemeris Data, > It needs to wait another 30 seconds to download > another one, or find other satellites. > > but the slow Initialization has a workaround:( if > using this workaround, Initialization speed is just > like V5.12, by my test. 15. Yeah...I got my a** kicked buy a bunch of yellow jackets on Sunday. Not fun. Still itchy. Hwy
  16. Stiles, No...I'm not into registering fish. I don't even like baiting my own hook. Hwy
  17. Hey all! I was just poking around the Magellan site when I discovered a new firmware update to version 5.35. Magellan doesn't list the changes they have made, but from what I've gathered, they are mostly cosmetic...no new killer apps. Also heard that the stupid backlight keeps coming on with DirectRoute. Will they PLEASE fix that?!?!
  18. Yeah...this happened to me not too long ago. I was just standing there on the sidewalk just waiting for my GPSr to settle down before moving out. An officer comes up and asks me what I'm doing. I went into EXTREME detail about gps, time, atomic clocks, satellites, etc.... I could see the officer's eyes just glazing over. I was quickly left alone.
  19. I have a MeriPlat and have been toying around with the idea of turning off WAAS. I've heard a limited amount of good and bad things about doing this. I suspect a lot has to do with the quality of WAAS reception in a given area, but I'll ask anyway. Has turning off the WAAS reception improved the quality of your geocaching experience?
  20. MeriPlat...with Direct Route...and 256MB. An amazing combination!
  21. What a great topic! We often joke about going with a hard hat and orange vest amongst my circle of cache buddies. The USGS idea isn't bad either! The cell phone idea never had occured to me altho I once was fortunate enough to have a cache in hand that happened to have a disposable camera. I just hung out and pretended to take some pics. My favorite exploit occured while finding GCHQN5. It's a subscriber-only cache, so I'll list my log here for all to enjoy: February 28 by hwyman (79 found) I have to beg to differ with Gaiter Man on this one. I too thought it would require very little stealth to go on the weekend. You have to remember that there are people who work on the weekend...including rent-a-cops as GLM found out. I found the cache at around 1pm. I took it back with me to my truck to sign since I forgot to bring a pen with me. Good thing! As I was stuffing the sign-in sheet back into the container, I noticed a security guy (i.e. The Man) was standing not far away staring at me. I continued about my business in my truck for about a minute, but The Man was keeping me down. He wasn't moving an inch and kept on staring. Hmm...stalemate. Just about that time, a pizza delivery guy showed up and was trying to get into the nearby building so The Man went over to escort the guy into the building. Excellent...a distraction! For a brief moment, I actually entertained the idea of sprinting over and rehiding the cache, but decided not to risk it. I started up the truck and made a hasty retreat...cache in hand. I hated doing that, but I didn't have a choice. The Man was on to me! I rushed home and informed RobAGD that I had the cache and of my plan to replace it. I decided a more subtle, covert approach was needed. Unfortunately, I had a prior commitment, so it took a few hours before I could attempt it. When I was ready, I changed into my running gear, grabbed a water bottle and the cache and headed back to the site. Time to go jogging! I parked around a far corner and slowly jogged up to the hiding spot where I suddenly had the urge to take a rest and have some nice, cool water from my bottle. Three seconds later, I'm off jogging again...with the cache safely in it's hiding spot! ET would be proud! Be stealthy!! --Hwy
  22. Hi! I'll be traveling to Atlanta this weekend for Music Midtown. I could just cram in as many caches as I can in the area, but I think my time is better spent on doing just a few really great caches. I could go on about what I consider to be "great" but I'll just leave it to you folks. What caches impressed you in the Atlanta area? Thanks! Hwy
  23. Here's another traveling cache: GCD079 Hwy
  24. I come across these every couple of months. A simple 1-2 star...everyone finds it. No one complains. Should be a quickie. I finally get around to it and I can't find. Several repeat visits later...nothing! It' just a freakin' one star...it shouldn't be this hard!! UGH!! Of course, in between trips I'm banging out 3-4 stars left and right. I can't say I find any joy in finally finding that elusive cache...I'm just happy to be able to forget about it.
  25. If a cache is in danger, you should take it with you...just inform the owner ASAP. I recently had to do as much. My log tells the story (Feb 28): log Hwy
