  1. unless this guy lives in his car, it was not burglary. unless the property was taken from the victim's "person or immediate presence", it is not robbery. but, no matter what, it was theft. hey, you brought it up . . .
  2. see if you have your GPS communications set up properly. Like NEMA setting.
  3. wrong. a right of way is an easement. that is legal terminology. I don't know; I am just basing my comments on what I have read here, and reading the 100 year old deed for the RR right of way that crosses my property (in Calif, and not part of this abandoned line). "for 50 dollars gold coin paid in hand, a right of way for railroad purposes, 16 rods in width" a trail is not only NOT "railroad purposes", it is in clear contravention of any railroad use. a sewer line is NOT "railroad purposes". The original owners received a sum of money for a right of way for a specific purpose, and with the understanding that if the purpose was no longer to be used, the right of way would be extinguished. That was the bargain struck, and the amount of money was based thereon. That is the bargain that should be adhered to. Theft, no matter how noble the purpose, is still theft.
  4. yes, that is what I am saying. If a railroad has a RIGHT OF WAY for railroad purposes, that is what they own, not the land itself, and not a right of way for other purposes, such as a trail or a sewer line. win-win, except for the landowners. they loose. I hope they sue.
  5. "If a deal were struck, King County would acquire the corridor through "railbanking," in which railroads sell, lease or donate rights of way on routes they no longer operate to private organizations or local governments for use as trails. The corridors are often sold at reduced rates, sometimes at below market value, in exchange for a tax deduction for the railroad. While the routes are then converted to trails, they can be returned to mass-transportation use in the future. Without railbanking, it would be nearly impossible for the public to buy a similar stretch of right of way through the heart of the Eastside, because the county would have to negotiate costly purchases one lot at a time, said Rod Brandon, King County's director of environmental sustainability. " What a scam. Private property rights loose again.

  7. thanks. That seems to do the trick.
  8. Why, when I click on a link does it open a new browser window? I am currently using a tabbed browser, and would prefer it open a new tab. better yet, I wish it would open in the existing tab, since I use "open in new tab" when I want to open a new tab. thanks
  9. I am not famous, but I have the GPS coordinates of both Judge Crater and Jimmy Hoffa.
  10. on computer #1, I installed EasyGPS (excellent!), downloaded some geocache waypoints, and started fiddling. I could select a waypoint and hit "view online" and up would pop the geocaching.com page for that cache. Great. Then I downloaded the waypoints into my GPS, and found a few caches. Very Great. now, I am at computer #2. My new USB flash drive doesn't speak to my old computer #2 (I'm working on it), so instead of using stuff from computer#1, I donloaded EasyGPS from the web, and it seems to work. I then uploaded my waypoint file from the GPS to computer#2. All seems fine. EXCEPT: if I go to "view online", I get the easygps.com site, not the geocaching.com page for the selected cache. Of interest, if I download a geocache from geocaching.com to computer#2, I can view a selected waypoint properly - it jumps to the geocaching.com page for that cache. any thoughts? I edited the "type" from "default" to "geocache", but still no luck. pretty weird, eh?
  11. as a new guy here, I had some trouoble (my own fault) downloading .loc waypoint files. The problem is that I did not yet agree to the Groundspeak License Agreement. When I clicked on the "download .loc waypoint file", it didn't tell me specifically I didn't yet agree to the GSL, but just gave me the download waypoint info page, which I had already read (ok, misread). I am sure I am not the only one who overlooks things, so I suggest that when a user who has not agreed to the license clicks on download .loc, he gets a specific error message. There is already a clearer click point for the general info on downloading waypoints. This site thus far looks VERRRRY interesting . . . thanks
  12. DHOY!!! You need to agree to the Groundspeak license agreement first. I already had a program that could handle .loc files, so I mistakenly thought the license agreement pertained to the software. It pertains to the .loc data file. Don't need premium service. thanks all. So, now we know.
  13. maybe you can help me. I just started in this. How do I download a .loc file (download waypoints). I searched the forums, but all I could find is discussions on how to download data to the GPS unit. I am at this point just trying to download the file from the web to my PC. You know, step ONE! thanks much!
