  1. Get what you pay for, agreed. When I said 'nice place', I wasn't referring to a 5-star Platinum Travellers Only location. I was referring to: Don't want to be fighting roaches for floor space in the washroom, and/or don't want to end up in "the wrong part of town". Not being from Portland, there is little way for me to know the answer to either question without some insight. Plus, there are almost always gems that are known only to locals, for which I was making an appeal to those of you who live in/near Portland and are, presumably, in the know. No, which is exactly why I was looking for some advice on where to stay. Excellent... thanks. Anyone know anything about any of these locations? Thanks.... that looks like a nice place! Maybe they have a discount available.
  2. Thanks for your replies, but only one person answered my question (kind of). Someone noted that they got a great deal at the Doubletree at Jantzen Beach through Hotwire, but didn't mention if it was a nice hotel/location or anything else. Additionally, reservations made through Hotwire only release the name of the hotel *after* purchase. So I'll never really know if it's the same location. I got a recommendation for 2 chains (Motel 6 and Super 8), but no recommendations for a specific location (ie: to go to or to stay away from). This isn't very useful as the entire point of me starting this thread is that I have never been to Portland, and I need help in choosing a location. Not a chain. I also wasn't asking about campers or campgrounds, as I fairly clearly noted that I would be staying in a hotel. Has anyone stayed in a Hotel/Motel in Portland that they felt as though they got a good deal? Or it was a nice location? Thanks! MrPeabody
  3. I am planning on attending the Portland Cache Machine, driving down from Vancouver on the 25th of June. I'd like to stay somewhere in town, but being notoriously cheap, I'd like to find a good value/comfort ratio. I checked out the Portland Oregon Visitor's Association (POVA) site and found their Cool Summer Deals section, but the list doesn't mean much to me other than the marketing-speak descriptions written by their promotions team. Based on this list provided can anyone give me recommendations on what places to stay, what places to avoid, or a recommendation for anywhere else that isn't on the list? Thanks, and I hope to see you all at the PCM. MrPeabody
  4. This is true, but the statement that hurt was "...the actual contents of the cache were a serious letdown". Especially when I had put so much work into it and the feedback I had gotten so far was that it was an excellent cache. Actually, the most recent finder changed his comments after their initial posting, which was a little more critical of the cache contents. But you are right... you can't please everyone. The items that were in there were all brand new and items that, when going through the store I bought them at, I thought to myself: "Cool! I'd want that." Thanks all. (edited for spelling)
  5. I put $30 as a rough budget amount because that is what I would consider to be a fair amount for creating a cache. I spent $60 creating a special cache that had extra components to it, which made it unusually expensive.
  6. That would be hard to do as the cache container is a steel-reinforced, locked container requiring a key to open. But it is possible that someone who found one of the keys took more than they were entitled to... however, I doubt it in this case.
  7. I recently placed a cache that has received pretty glowing reviews from everyone who has found it, and from other cachers who are still out looking for it (it is a key cache). But two of the three people who have found it have pretty much slammed the contents, saying they were unimpressive. I was hurt by the comments, especially because in *my* opinion, I thought the items were cool. Obviously I was wrong. It's doubly bad because as a new cache, I'd like people to see how cool it is, not that the contents are crappy. A list of items in the cache: Eyeglasses repair toolkit Magnetic spirit level Kids bike horn (for any kids that came along) Socket wrench set And a few other items I can't remember. In my defense, I spent almost $60 getting this cache ready, not including the time and research I had to go through in order to hide it. So, my question to everyone: When building a cache, what kind of items do you place inside, and approximately how much money do you spend on the items themselves? Do you put in items specifically for the FTF?
  8. This has been discussed before... you might find some useful responses in this thread or this one.
  9. Works fine for me. I have had this problem crop up occasionally with IE. Instead of clicking that link, try right-clicking and selecting Save As... Sometimes that works.
  10. Why would you have to send the unit to Garmin for a firmware upgrade? Isn't this something that can be done by the user?
  11. I like the idea. So long as the number hasn't been taken, how is this different from issuing vanity license plates? I'd love to have GCMRPB for instance. I'd pay for that.
  12. Having lived in BC, Ontario and New Brunswick I certainly found that the Ontario stores were *far* superior to the BC ones in customer service and overall store upkeep. I spent many a weekend in CT with my father when we lived just north of Toronto and I remember it being a pretty reliable place. Here in Vancouver, I can think of 3 CT stores that are just sad for customer service, choice and general neatness.
  13. I have just spent about 15 minutes trolling through postings looking for a screenshot I saw sometime late last year. It was from the GC.com home page and the buttons along the left looked more streamlined... smaller. Jeremy, do you still have that screenshot to post? Or maybe a more current one?
  14. This is a part of the old forums that I dearly miss. I hope it can be added.
  15. I have occasionally seen screenshots of proposed new looks/interfaces for geocaching.com. Any word on when this will be rolled out?
  16. I think it would be nice if Garmin had a presence here actually. They seem to have responded to the incredible growth of Geocaching by adding some features to the 60 series. As well, they must be thanking the gods that Geocaching was invented, as their sales would never have been so high had it not. I hope that they do pay attention to user requests and input, as there are too many examples of companies who design products with zero user/customer input.
  17. Does anyone know that there is more to the CS than just Compass and Barometric Altimeter? I think I might use the compass, although I'm just not sure. I bring a normal compass with me all the time anyway (just in case my batteries die and I have to orienteer my way out).
  18. A game I came up with when showing my friend how to use a GPS was: GPS Poker. Here's how it works: Best played in a car or (if walking/hiking) over a long distance. No limit to the number of players A player is elected to go first. This is the active player. The GPS is turned on and ready to be 'marked'. The active player says 'Mark!' at some random time of their choosing. Another player is poised to create a waypoint (by hitting Mark or Set) when the active player tells them to. The new waypoint should have the players name, or a number that the player will remember. This is their 'hand'. Everyone takes their turn as the active player until everyone has marked a spot and created a hand. Using just the Minutes and Seconds (the Latitude & Longitude will likely be common amongst all players), each number represents a 'card'. Use the following scale:1 = Ace 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 = face value 0 = 10 or Face Card (i.e.: King, Queen or Jack) [*]Pick 5 of your best cards and make a 'hand'.
  19. I pre-ordered my 60CS way back in early December (late November?), hoping that it would ship by about now. I have just been informed that the delivery date will now be pushed back to sometime in March. So, here is my dilemma. My dealer can ship me a 60C today, or I can continue to wait for a 60CS. What would you do? Are the sensors worth waiting for? I need you all to help me make a decision here.
  20. Hmmm.... well a few people have noted that they have their GPS60C in hand, but no one has posted a picture. Suspicious.
  21. As I eagerly await delivery of my GPS60CS, I keep visiting Garmin, GPSCentral and other sites just to take a look at the unit. Now that there are a few that have been delivered out there, can someone post a picture of theirs, so we can see them in the real world?
  22. Of the caches I have found, there are 3 that come to mind: A Gift to Victoria (which is now archived) Submarine Races and Cache Practice 2 Each of them gave me the thrill of *Eureka!* when I finally discovered the location. Additionally, I stood as close as 2 feet from each one of them without discovering the cache location until I started thinking laterally.
  23. You are correct, Toybreaker71 got word from a Garmin Rep at CES that there would not be any mounts available for the 60C series. See this thread for more. Although, as you have pointed out, this is not the case. Garmin also has mount accessories available for the 60 series.
  24. That's odd, considering I just saw a number of accessories (including mounts) on GPSCentral.ca as well as on Garmin's site.
