  1. Last I heard a few were looking at a domain or two so they could grab and use. Some want it up fast, (by today) others would like a slower approach to see if what we grab is right for the next ten years. I would guess by Monday something is up. UTAG may rename, most likely will organize but it will be around in some form.
  2. I did run a web crawler last night and picked up the content of the site. Except I could not get the forum data. I was up until early this morning trying to get it to work. So I have a mirror on my computer at home of the old site. I just gave it a cursory glance and it looks to be there, with all the data and files (benchmark, county data). Given a lot of it is stuff we do not use. Most hosting sites you either pay for hosting and they get domains free, or you pay for your domains and they will host. Sadly the data may be lost from the old forums unless he gives them up. I am not sure paying a lot is worth the data. Maybe, but I rarely surfed old forum data. The domain loss would be the worst of it. It may not seem like it, but everyone would have to get used to something new.
  3. Correct.. and they watch like a hawk. As volunteers we got a list of approved companies using the logo or name, and were to report all others. I believe they were giving out cache awards for people that turned in fakes but I dont remember for sure. They even went after an Olympic squad that had pins with logos and had not gotten permission. The IOC is very very picky and one of the most aggressive at protecting their property. So tread lightly or you could have issues.
  4. It is usually good to ask first. A larger cache (small and larger) I will post a note I left an additional log. On smaller caches that there is not room for an additional log. I pull them and then contact the owner, and ask what they want. I have posted photos of the logs online, given them to the cache owner, and a few other methods. Some of my local friends and I have standing rules to help each others caches.
  5. These are all in Utah Kokapelli series Scout Series Seinfield, Shakespeare, Mcguiver road Musical Highway (many are not easy park and grabs) Eccentric Peak Trail Hiking Not one trail.. but Lots of caches
  6. When the original GC#'s were assigned and they were entered into the dbase they entered by state/country. So Oregon cacher were entered first, then Colorado, Georgia, etc. I do not know if he had a pattern on who was next. Then when they were entered it was first come first serve. So he just entered. I am still fleshing it out... the idea. The fronts would vary from coin to coin, with the back the same design but varying in colors from state to state (country). Who knows.. i may start and decide there is not enough interest to keep going. I also wonder about the cache owners. I don't want someone upset because I made a coin of their cache. So i may want to touch basis with them as well. They could easily become out of date if the cache is suddenly archived. So there are a few issues to overcome.
  7. I am considering doing a series of coins for the oldest active caches in each state. Thoughts? Would that interest people?
  8. I use the rite in rain paper.. it is about $40 for 200 sheets. So not pricey per page. but that is a lot of logs, you may wish to share the cost with others. I did have a clear container leak, it was full of water, and green algea. Nasty. your note made me think of that
  9. Agreed... if there are one or two questionable logs, that is not enough for me think a virtual is being abused. I would not have thought that here.
  10. I understood it was not a personal attack. But you were pointing out issues that people not in the area may not be aware of (like still having a few feet of snow on the ground, or area fenced off for construction). Would I like it if someone placing a NA from Florida that did not know that? No .. I agree with you. Would I have gone out and posted a NA on this cache? No I would not have. I do not know enough about it, and I do not even follow it. Is there a discussion to be had about armchair NA? Yes I think there is. Is it always wrong? It is inappropriate in many circumstances, yet it may be appropriate in others. I deal with those decisions on a regular basis. The point I was making was responsibility. We have a responsibility to make sure we do not post a NA where we should not. The cache owner should take care of his caches as well, and follow the rules that are set out. Once a Virtual/Webcam owner takes time off (forced or not), they know there is a risk it will not be there when they come back. I know I have to watch my caches. Sometimes I can get there soon, and other times I know I risk a NA when I do not get to one quickly. In this instance it goes both ways. The reviewer would have been made aware of this at some point if the owner was not active, when he did a sweep, someone emailed him, or someone else placed a NA note on it. It is just a matter of time for any owner when they don't log on. As a person looking at caches you have to take a deep breath. I would not have done this, or wanted to deal with the fallback, and I do not say he is right, but he is correct in that the cache owner is gone, and there is an issue. Do we kill the messenger? As to the person dumping NA notes on the all the original posters caches, and leaving vulgar logs, that is just childish.
  11. You mean Earthcaches... Virtuals can still require them
  12. I agree Narcissa. There is no reason to gang up on anyone. Everyone knows if you own caches and leave.. there are consequences. It may be illness, death, or just getting bored with everything. If I left for a year, even forced out and cut off from internet. I would not expect my caches to all be there when coming back. I may expect to come back in a few weeks or a month, but I understand the consequences. It was only a matter of time before a reviewer noticed it in a sweep, someone emailed the reviewer, or posted a needs archived. The results would have been the same. A warning posted, and then wait to see what the cache owner does. That is why stone throwing is dumb.
  13. I still find it sad that everyone's piling on the person that spoke up, and no mention of the person that abandoned their cache. If the person was still around, even logging in, there would be no issue.
  14. The admin explains on the cache page why a traditional would not be feasible. Oops, my bad. I should have actually looked at the page. I would not have issued an SBA either. I think that all of us are the cache police, when it comes down to a cache that can give our sport a black eye, but to seek out harmless caches and post NAs - let's just say I don't get the point. It moves 30 feet a year... I wish I always had to look within that much of a circle. If you adjust the coords, or people move it back to the marker they put out... no problem... right?
  15. Sorry for original poster and everyone dumping on him. I would agree with him. The cache owner agreed to rules, and to stay active to keep his virtual. We self police, I do not think one can be held to a different standard than another. If a cache is being ignored or is breaking the rules there is no problem with someone saying it needs maintenance or needs archived. If the person logs in and visits, everything will move on and nothing will happen. Great quote, but violating the rules of the game, is violating the rules. The cache owner should know that. You should be looking at the cache owner for not following the rules, not anyone else. Throwing stones at someone for letting someone know is stupid.
  16. I do not think there is anything specific, but here is some that seem to do well. Mount10bike coins because they were the first. Your state geocoins will be popular in your area, I hunted to finish a set. Scouting.. I have tried to find any of those. Reviewer coins. Lackey coins. Bigger named cachers personal coins. Some are just unique, unfortunately a unique coin sometimes spawns near copies. So what is cool and desirable today, may be commonplace tomorrow. You really have to find what interests you to collect.
  17. DrJay posted on his facebook this last week he passed 4 years.. of course he is insane. I have seen him cache sick, tired, etc. He was up this morning at 5 am in 0 degree weather. He does plan ahead. many caches are purposely left for wintertime so he can find them with snow.
  18. I have had a few email from international people. If you wish me to send you some let me know. We can work things out. I still have to buy them at the standard price, I cannot get them any cheaper. If you are stateside or if you can, please call into the office (mentioned above). If that is not an option, or a credit card with them does not work, I will do what I can.
  19. We have slowly came to an end of our 2010 geocoins... we still have some available. Below is a picture of the full set of everything that was made. I put a note on the two that are sold out, and the two that were not sold, we gave 130+ out in contests here for those that visited our council geocaches. From California to Texas, and Arizona to Montana, a big stretch of people who traveled to get them. Thanks everyone for participating. The top row (blue outer with a red inner ring) Brass had 130, Copper 100, Silver 70. Middle row (Blue outer with a green inner ring) Brass had 230, Copper 125, Silver 70. The copper and brass are still available. Bottom row (Green outer with the red inner ring)Brass had 150, Copper 150 (no silver). The copper and brass are still available. Just as a background. When I proposed the coins because nationals were only sending about 30 to our council, we were discussing having 100 made. We were going to have 1/4 for our contest (75 for sale). Many were extremely worried that we would not be able to sell the 70 coins that we had. I have to admit that it was pretty touch and go for a while. One supplier only wanted to quote 300, so the numbers rose slowly. 300 was not a lot more expensive than 100 to buy, after the die fees and shipping. The numbers went up to the initial order of 300 with 230 for sale. We crossed our fingers and made mention of it for sale. two weeks later the number of coins on hand was down to 40-50 and demand was going up. then an repeat order with a different design, then another, and another. We eventually placed five orders. I have to commend coins and pins. They were great to work with through the three months of quoting, design changes, and getting non-geocachers educated on what coins were, tracking numbers, and everything like that. So now we come to an end of the year. There are not a lot left. of the Blue outer ring and green inner, most are left from the bottom row in the photo. For those that asked. It is delicate arch, and the Utah Raptor on the back. Thanks for the ride. Hopefully I can repeat the chore next year. Thanks for the supporters that bought them. They helped pay for many geocaching games that we had through the year in geocaching for the scouters and the community. If you would still like to grab them, our scout office is selling them still. You will most likely need to let them know what you want. Council services are (801) 437-6222. The coins are $10 and they were only taking credit/debit over the phone if I remember right. Shipping was $1 at one time. COIN SALES 2010 by dnielson2002, on Flickr
  20. close Czech Republic http://coord.info/GC14WV8 5500 finds that is the most i have heard of.
  21. Perhaps.. it is pricey to buy all the tracking numbers, icons, etc... but you could.
  22. We are still selling our coins for our local council. (Utah National Parks Council) The coins are 1-3/4" We have sold out of all the ones shown with the Red Stripe. TheY may have red available but I am pretty sure the red strip is replaced by green on the current ones. $10 each Antiqued Brass and Copper Available. You can call our council service center (801) 437-6222 (not the store). They take credit cards but not paypal. We also have silver ones, available in a contest. We placed a number of caches out around the state. http://www.geocaching.com/seek/nearest.aspx?u=UNPC-BSA Follow the instructions on the cache page to be entered in a drawing for a free coin. Visit and take a picture, then email your address (to mail the coin to). The addresses are not being used for anything but the contest.
  23. I had hopes that this was a one time thing... but it appears the next time I selected it there was no change. I am aware that I have to download them. It does not appear on that list at all. I received the email that it was done.. with no download link on the download page. Am I doomed until a fix is found? Is there no joy in mudville?
  24. I ran a My Finds PQ last night.. I got a date and time that it ran. 06/07/2010 22:59:57* and received the email. But it is not available on my download list. Did I get the one glitch for the day?
  25. A few notes.. Some areas do not have many caches at all, and do not have different kinds. Making the requirement to visit a specific kind or type of cache would be foolish, and put it out of the range of many youth. Remember as a merit badge you cannot require more, nor can you accept less then their best to accomplish the badge. As a scoutmaster if I find a chancellor requires more then the book, I call the councilor and if they don't change, I will send the youth to another. Some of the people approving the badge have an "old map" mentality. Remember geocachers present the idea and come up with initial requirements, but a committee reviews the requirements. In this case the committee felt there needed to be some "old school" understanding of maps, even if we, as cachers never use it. I have already heard whining about not allowing other web sites. This site is free for all, anyone can sign up and place, and the guidelines promote responsible use, and permission being obtained. That fits the mission of the BSA. No money is required, no sponsors, and lots of caches about everywhere.
