  1. Now that's unusual. Whereabouts were you caching? I've found the stone foundations of old homes in the woods before, but nothing that big.
  2. I don't keep it a secret; like others have said: I'd gladly explain it to someone who shows interest. But if I don't feel like explaining it and the person shows no signs of being engaged, I won't bother. My father, on the other hand, is a different story. He's the type of person that will drag out any old topic as an excuse to keep talking to somebody. Geocaching happens to be one of those topics. I wouldn't mind that he does that, it's just that I get a little tired of him wanting me to explain everything to an ultimately uninterested person when we go on our business runs. It's like...dawg...you brought it up, you explain it. LOL sorry. Just a little rant about my family's social mannerisms. Several times, though, he has been able to convince somebody to come caching with us. Not a problem with that, as I believe that it's more fun in groups, but I'm not sure what my dad was thinking bringing his elderly friend, who had suffered a series of strokes the year before, on a ten-cache sweep in a rugged state park. THAT was a disaster.
  3. Hey, from Lake Orion! I actually learned about Geocaching in school. My science teacher was offering us extra credit at the end of the year if we were able to find and log a few. Well, we didn't have a GPSr at the time, and the three or four my teacher had on hand sometimes had two-week waits on them. Well, the premise of Geocaching that my teacher had offered piqued my interest to the point that I purchased a GPSr for myself, and my dad and I have been caching ever since. Well, admittedly, we took a year-long break, but we're back now! Our adventures have brought us to countless local areas that we didn't even know existed. And inside places we were already familiar with, our caching has brought us to the most amazing little copses, streams, and hollows off the beaten path. I enjoy doing deep-forest traditionals, multis, and Earthcaches with my dad. The more urban micros and mystery caches I prefer to do with a goofy group of friends. Just because it's not as fun to act a fool in public without them LOL. When we took a year-long break from caching, I realized, when we returned to the sport, that I had little memory of all the cool places we had been in the past. I now make it a point to carry a camera with me whenever I cache.
  4. LMAO!! Seeing that would have made my entire LIFE.
  5. Well, basically, our GPS led us to a small copse not too far off of the trail, and it looked like the type of place a cache would be hidden. We found a scorched stretch of ground, several melted candles, and the remnants of what looked like some kind of wooden structure in an old oak tree. That kind of took us by surprise, but we kept looking. There was a lot of debris in the area, and a lot of potential hiding spots. We ended up finding a whole bunch of crap: a tin with plastic wrappings in it, a glove, a NIGHTGOWN. After a bit, we realized we weren't going to find the cache, and, being sufficiently unsettled, we high-tailed out of that park before the ghost of whatever hermit sorcerer that had performed their goat-sacrificing rituals there could curse us. Went home, realized that we had entered the coords incorrectly, returned the next weekend, and found the cache with ease.
  6. THAT. Now, I've only found 60 caches in my career (and I plan to come out of retirement tomorrow), but this was definitely the most ridiculous thing we've had to go through in order to find a cache. We waded up the river, thinking it was the only way to get to the first stage of the multi we were after. Well, we struggled up this thing, climbed atop of the ruined dam we were aiming for, looked to the left, and found a trail leading right to it. No comment. Oh well! It was a fun cache, anyway. Definitely one of the more creative ones we've ever done.
