    GOOGLE ADS

I've been away from caching for a while and just returned to find the ads.....geez, they suck. I've always felt that geocaching is a sport outside of the mainstream, sort of like skateboarding. I used to love going out with my dog, having adventures that were a bit un-conventional. I thought geocaching was supposed to be about FUN, not profit. Instead of paying to become a premium member to get rid of the ads, how about this: I get rid of all my CASHES that I put out for everybody to use?! Let the preeeemium members go play thier stupid little game. Yeah... since this site VERY generously gives you the option to not pay ANYTHING for using it's bandwidth, server drive space, server processing time, etc etc etc, and has opted to allow a few relatively unobtrusive ad banners to be placed (which, seem to be doing a pretty good job of keeping things relevant to geocaching, which is nice for random banners, even if there is an occassional oddity) Heck, why don't we just get rid of those elitist 'premium' members. Better dump the corporate sponsors, too. Then the site can crash daily from server overload, and take a half hour to load a cache page because the bandwidth is completely overrun. New features and tech support? Forget it...they had to go find jobs that could actually pay them. Ever heard the expression "Don't look a gift horse in the mouth?"

    terra cache

The few geocaches listed on TC.com in my area are largely piggy backed on existing GC.com geocaches. Sometimes only a few feet away. Heck one even copied a bio I wrote on one of my cache pages verbatim. I would be curious to know how many terracaches are in my area, but I absolutely refuse to grovel to the elite masses and beg for someone to be my friend so I can look into their little party.

    REVIEWERS

They do. You're supposed to help them by providing any pertinant information when you submit the cache, and if they need more, you need to provide it. How far is 'up a hill'. 50 feet from school property? Three blocks? And I suppose you think you should be a reviewer for your area since you know it like the back of your hand, and your pappy sits on the town council and you have blanket permission to hide a cache 'ne where' (does anyone else read that as northeast where?)

    REVIEWERS

ooooh ooooh ooooh!!! That's getting mighty close to invoking Goodwin's law, isn't it?
  5. Looks like the H stands for High-sensitivity antenna. Wonder if that means they put the SiRF chip in it, or what? I still would put my money on the 60CSx under cover though, what with already having an 'external' antenna vs the legend's internal patch antenna, and the added option of a true external antenna.
  6. I think that would fall under the 'pointy tool' clause.... landowner permission only.
  7. No. If you get the 60CSx (which I recommend), Garmin makes additional software (Mapsourse..City Navigator is the newest, I think) for auto-routing, but you don't need that for geocaching. It's nice to have, yes, but I rarely use it.
  8. Hey, why not an additional function of Geo-Genie that goes out, retrieves the cache for you and brings it right to your recliner so you can log it from home, and then takes it back? What? That would defeat the purpose of putting a cache out in the first place, you say? Hm. No thanks. If someone makes a cache a challenge, I want to experience the challenge they intended; and likewise if I hid a challenging cache, I don't want shortcuts used.
  9. By FAR Geocaching is NOT the most expensive hobby. Try bowhunting. $300 for a bow $100 each for treestands (everyone knows you need at least 3) $300 for good camoflauge $30,000 for a truck to get you to the good spots $..................... Geocaching is cheap.
  10. Actually, I think Paypal would get the credit card processing fee, and that would be part of the 'seller fee' that paypal charge. But, depending on how Groundspeak's account is set up with paypal, it could be a fee-free transfer anyway.
  11. First thing I'd do is find a university offering a degree in GIS. I think there are a few out there, or there are more that offer a 'certificate' in GIS. Not really sure what that means. I do small-scale work in GIS at my job, and I will tell you this: The future possibilities for that area are completely limitless. In 5-10 years, that is a skill that is going to be invaluable in the workforce. Heck, the 3 of us in my office that use it on a regular basis have no more training with the software than a couple 2-3 day seminars; and already we have been able to use the technology to shave nearly 4 months off of some projects. If you like maps and like data analysis, GO FOR IT!! I see that you're in California. Every year, ESRI (makers of the ArcGIS platform) have a huge user conference in San Diego. Might want to look into that.
  12. Actually, I think that was a forum burp..
  13. What would these coupons be for? As far as I know, no such coupon exists; if you want one, you'll have to come up with your own design. But I still don't understand why.
  14. You forgot to step off your soapbox. Of course, up on that pedestal, it might be tough.
  15. GC.com is fairly mild. An outdoors forum I frequent has a pretty aggressive filter, incapable of reading in context. Keep in mind, it's an outdoors forum. Cocker Spaniel, Hancock County, and Representative Hancock (all come up fairly frequently on the board) turn into *censored*er Spaniel, Han*censored* County, or Representative Han*censored*. I got reamed out for saying something pissed me off, to the point of being threatened with board suspension. I challenged, as there was no guidelines for what may or may not be considered offensive, and they have backed off a bit. Like I said, GC.com is mild. And that's okay.
  16. If you submitted it on the weekend, expect it to take longer, as that's when probably better than 75% of caches are hidden--and when the local reviewers have time to acually (gasp) go caching! A Sunday afternoon hide in a more cacher-dense area (read: more possible new caches to review) could take 3-4 days for the reviewer to work through the backlog and get to yours. If there are any problems with it, or if it's a multi that they have to check several stages for conflicts, expect more time.
  17. It would take just as long, if not longer, for cache-tech to review a new cache than to fix the bad coordinates on the old one. For now, I would temp. disable the cache, post a note to the cache page stating the correct coordinates, and send an email to cache-tech explaining everything. Might also post a reviewer note to the page as well explaining everything, too.
  18. I did try it. Says only supports Garmin Units, which I have. Not sure what else needs to be done. Your answer doesn't help me. You need to download a plugin from Garmin for your web browser. It works with Explorer & Firefox supposedly, but only works with Windows XP (maybe Vista... anyone chime in on this?) There's supposed to be Mac support coming soon. Anyone heard about support for earlier versions of Windows or Linux? Yep...works fine with vista.

    FTF code

I think you're confusing FTF with FTL (First to Log). The paper copy at the cache will hold the correct record. And last time I checked, nothing in the website coding keeps track of first to finds, anyway. After all, (all together now, class) it's not about the numbers...
  20. Why not bring back the feature? The removal was punitive over some dolts re-enabling the thread to respond one more time. Surely we've learned our lesson? Gosh, TotemLake...and I thought you've been around here a while... People learning their lesson? Riiiiiiiiiight..as soon as they can, they'll abuse the feature again.
  21. That sounds like a WONDERFUL way to have an in-depth conversation with a bunch of angry Coast Guard officers!
  22. I could easily remind of anti-pc pages like this, though I wouldn't post them on a Geocaching forum. The thing I was meaning is that Macusers don't care if a stick is infected or not. As I know there is officially only one mac virus ( Trojan, sorry) and it didn't even work. My goal wasn't to insult PC users -which I respect even if I use macs- and if you feel insulted then it's your problem, not mine. I seem to recall reading something the other day that the recent mac os's have an even worse swiss-cheese security system than windows. But why waste the time exploiting it when you're going to affect 37 people and Ms. Johnson's 5th grade english class? Back on topic: I would never put an unknown flash drive in my computer. Yeah, it'd probably be okay, but there is a risk. And even if there is no malicious code, who's to say you're not about to see some pictures from an anonymous person that no decent human being should ever see? I'll pass, thanks.
  23. I was going to mention those being the exception to my observation, but decided not to go into it...
  24. I think the attributes are there specifically for the cache hunt. Like the hunting area one; the intent is not to tell you that you can hunt there, rather, it is a warning that during certain times of the year caution is needed because there may be hunters there. I think maybe the icon you want is 'scenic view', which is the binoculars.
  25. I'm with nobby here... probably better than 75% of the caches on my found list, you show me the cache page and I can tell you where to park, what route to avoid, and where you will find the cache.
