  1. What do you guys think about asking the cachers ahead of time to bring along a print photo if they are not yet into the "digital age"? I guess I am personally leery about the disposables simply because I worked in photo labs for 6 years, so I personally saw how many bad pictures would come out of those things, lol. I always felt bad for the brides who thought it would be a cute idea to put one on each table....if the person wasn't within the 4-12 feet, the picture was awful. All in all, I think it could be a great project that alot of people would enjoy. I'll pass along everyone's suggestions and see which routes he decides to go!
  2. I can't see that working with an outdoor cache - film shouldn't be exposed to heat, as it will discolor after time. Also, the conditions under which a truly decent photo can be taken are really limited, and most people don't adhere to those - not to mention the cost in buying said cameras and getting the film developed. I have told him about the idea of asking for photos when finders log the cache, and we discussed even changing around the requested subject matters everytime he does maintenance on the cache. Generic subjects, with a choice of 2 - he would then like to make a page on his site showing off everyone's photos (with credits to the photographers and all that jazz) as an....art project? of sorts...a community gallery...
  3. OHH Yes, I saw the rattlesnake one on that website. That would be a HORRIBLE idea, because anyone within a halfmile radius would hear me scream, and I'd run like Forest Gump.
  4. A friend of mine who would like to get into caching had a great idea. He's a photographer, and he thinks it would be great to share photos. His first idea was to place a USB memory key in there for people to upload a really cool photo they've taken, but then thought better of that. His next idea was for people to place 4x6 photos in there, I didn't think it would go over well. I think it would be great to have a place where you maybe tell people to go visit/email to upload a cool photo....only those who found the cache get the info, and maybe only those who found the cache can access the webpage that all these pics get uploaded to...??? Thoughts??
  5. I ran across a website that sells cache containers...ones that look like a regular item. Ex: Pinecones, apple, rock, sprinkler head, metal wall plate..... Has anybody ever encountered a cache thats been hidden in one such as these? I think I would go nuts trying to locate one of these!
  6. I'm on 3rd street, just a stones throw from the Capitol building. Feel free to drop me an email if you want to meet up sometime. I used to have a Garmin Legend and I saw you had some questions about it in another thread, I'd be happy to help you with it if you want. I'll look for you in the GOTCHA group as well. Good to know =) I tried joining the Yahoo group but I havent gotten past the bouncers yet =)
  7. I work in downtown as well, for the lovely govm't. Living not too far from here, in the area near 83/81/Progress Thank you, I'll check out the Yahoo group!
  8. Still figuring out my eTrex Legend. We went out last night to try and find a cache and weren't successful - its not the cache, many other users posted successful results, said it was easy to find. I used the "compass" screen to help, but it kept going wonky and just when I thought I was 2 feet away, it said oops no, 30 feet in that other direction. So I'm going to back there tonight and use the map zoomed all the way in. I was looking at that today, and it shows our tracks from last night - how do I erase that, but not the waypoint thats saved?
  9. I'm wondering if there are any more experienced cachers in the Harrisburg area that would be interested in showing the ropes to me and my fiance. We just got our Garmin Legend the other day. I've figured out how to use it, have a few counties worth of street maps for the heck of it since I get lost alot (haha), and have attempted a few caches. I say attempted because we never found them, despite all the previous finders' postings of "hey found this right away" or similar. I learn best by being shown, not reading directions!
  10. Well I've already managed all but actually leaving my apartment to test it. I marked my current location, I manually entered a coordinate to a known cache. Yes it is a serial port, and yes, my MB still has one. My main issue right now is getting the maps to the unit. I will go to that chat recommended the post prior and go that route.
  11. I'm having problems too!! with EVERYTHING. I really can't afford to pay obscene cash for maps, but I don't see how I can geocache when it shows only major highways...I really like the puzzle aspect of the multicaches, but if I don't have streets on it, how can I get there? I just got mine last night. I got it to load up satellites and show me "you are here" (where, the middle of nowhere?) and I figured out how to input a coordinate to show me where a cache was (but wasn't able to physically go test it out). I've downloaded Ibycus's maps and have that working on my PC, I just can't manage to get it to transfer to the silly unit. I, too, was wondering if I shoulda picked something else...I feel so stupid =/
