What Are Your Hobbies Beside Geocaching?
rescue557 replied to aragorn05's topic in General geocaching topics
Apparently, though this is the first I've heard. -
I have a Magellan Meridian Platinum GPS and I have yet to figure out a way to turn off the WAAS, so I have elected to just keep it on. It is more accurate than my previous GPS that did not have WAAS. Hope this helps!

Has anybody tried Otter Boxes? They are completely water and air tight, stand up to anything, and strong enough to drive a fire truck over them! Yes, I have done some of my own testing. The only downfall is that they can be somewhat pricy. I'm thinking of putting one through the ultimate test -- a Geocache container. Here is a link to the Otterbox Website if anybody would like more information.

Use whatever works best for you; there are no set rules for what system you choose to use.

Not a problem! Just caching as usual, I suppose.

I'm in! -
Now that is totally cool! Perhaps I'll look into this! Yay!

There are GPS expansion cards that come with software built-in. That is if I'm understanding the question correctly.

That's what I had hoped to have accomplished, but it looks a bit too much work to simply post my location every time I go somewhere. I have to carry a laptop in my car, connect my gps, update my coordinates via the Internet... We'll see what happens, I guess. Maybe when I figure out a more effecient and effective method, this will take place. In the mean time, check out my website for other cool stuff, ok?

Go for it! What have you got to lose?

I run SETI on my computer, my laptop, and my mom's computer at her house. So far... 311 completed units.

Cool, My son and I will each have one out soon. My son's Red M&M just got picked up. We just decided what to do for our Second TB tonight. We are planning a little road trip in the morning to go place it and to pick up another one or two. That's a great M&M! So great to see newer and nicer travel bugs on the way!

That's EXACTLY what it's all about!

This would depend on the cache itself; if you place a cache, any one or more of the formentioned groups may seek it. For me? Anything up to and including 4 to 4.5 stars. Haven't done a 5 star, yet, though would like to. Many play for the numbers; I don't -- I play for the fun, thrill, and adventure. Personally, I'd like to be outdoors at least 90% of the time; staying at home trying to figure out a puzzle isn't my style, but it might be of interest to others. If the cache could keep my interest, there really is no limit. There is onethat is a 40 leg multi. I haven't heard of any that are more than 40 as of yet. Some people love multi-stage caches, some do not. Generally, if the cache is good, people will travel as far as they seem necessary to seek it. I will travel up to 150 miles if the cache is good. Please, do not create a micro! If you are going through all of this work to create a good cache, do not make it a micro. (This is my personal preference here.) Ammo cans work the best and are favored by the majority of the geocaching community. Tupperware is right out; it will not last and has the tendancy to leak and crack. If you have more questions, post them to the forum and someone will surely be glad to help.

I think I'm doing the right thing; at least I hope I am. I support Groundpeak ($30/Year), hide quality caches, and help others maintain theirs (the ones I find). What more is there to do?

Me with my Public Pay Phone travel bug, the most popular bug I have ever released.
-
I was not aware of that. So just how big can they get before someone gets upset?
-
These are awesome! Look all you want; no trains!
-
I agree, I have 2 hides that are wheelchair accessable! I'm not saying that they should all be, but it is something that needs to be taken into consideration.
-
Generally, if the cache is a 1/1, there is a pretty good indication that it is probably handicapped accessable. That's my 2 cents.
-
Please, no more micros!
-
Thanks! That's exactly what I was looking for! You are super cool!

Cost is not an issue, as I have the necessary equipment already, I just need the software. Something similar to EasyGPS, but with the ability to track in real time and upload the stats to a web page.

I know of many places in Upstate NY. I just don't have the resources to put together a bunch of geocaches. If anybody is interested, contact me via email if you need some ideas. tom@tomslatin.com
