  1. This wasn't found in the cache last night but it was within 20' of GZ. There are some city supplied bike racks near by and someone had taken a Trojan Magnum condom and placed it on the pole of the bike rack. The 21 year old daughter of my caching partner noticed it so we had to give her a ribbing about it....
  2. I can remember finding my first cache years ago at the summitt of Guadalupe Peak in West Texas. I didn't know that it was a geocache back then but it was an ammo can with trade items and a logbook. I remmeber everyone had a lengthy log about their hike to the summit and where they were from. I ended up writing in it myself because there were pens inside and I traded out some stuff I had. I just thought it was like a logbook for people that climbed the mountain. We just had an event celebrating the 1 millionth published cache. One of the stats mentioned said that geocaching started in 2001 and it took them 7 years to reach 500,000 active caches yet only 3 additional years to reach 1 million. Maybe it was the "flood" of new caches/micros that started people just placing a name and date?
  3. My area is pretty large (D/FW) so I get notifications daily. I have my radius set up for 30 miles. I don't always go for them.....I like reading them too!
  4. I placed an interest LPC hide. I won't mention it because I don't want the "Geocaching Nazis" to bust the door down to this thread.....Oh...too late....they're already in here! *runs out of thread*
  5. Did you lose a flashlight? Nope! HAHAHAHA! It was during the day.
  6. LOL! I was just caching on Randol Mill Rd the day before yesterday! Didn't see any pipe bombs though.
  7. I have learned that truly NEAT/CLEVER hides don't last long. People tend to have a "scorched Earth" attitude at GZ looking for a cache. I had a really neat acorn hide using one of the HUGE acorns (don't know the tree) that we have down here. Just wouldn't last....people kept tearing it apart and I grew tired of replacing it. It even wasn't TOO difficult because I hung it in a generic "landscaping" tree so it wasn't really a frustrating hide....just neat camo. The ten people who found it absolutely loved it. I just wanted to offer something different from all of the film cans. And, before people get their feelings hurt, yes....I would believe someone who PAYS for a membership would have more respect for geocaching. That respect even extends to PAYING for the amount of work Groundspeak puts into this game even though it's offered for free.
  8. Could be a thief is frequenting this cache. I would write a note raising my concerns about it but, really, there's not much else that could be done. Try not to let it have an affect on you but I'm afraid that the more popular that geocaching becomes we're going to see more and more coins/TB's/SWAG/Caches disappearing.
  9. 1). I don't ask people to trade even for my sig items. I want them to have them to add to their collections. Some folks believe STRICTLY that you take something out, you put something in. 2). Depending on how many caches you have left your sig card in without signing the log would be the better judgement of whether or not you should go back and sign the logs. I don't know of very many cache owners who actually check the logs with what's posted online....very, very few. So, at worst, you could lose a few smilies. How bad do you want them?
  10. I use my bike (sans mountains) frequently when the weather is good. Saves on gas and gives me some exercise.
  11. I am getting ready for the Texas Challenge this weekend in San Angelo (shameless plug ). I was downloading caches to my geep and would click on each cache page to see if the cache was still active and had last been found with a smilie. This took FOREVER so I just gave up and sent them to my GPS and decided to deal with it later. Now, I'm aware that you can make pocket queries and such but, I'm having trouble with that lately AND I just wanted the caches in the park....not extra's to throw me off. Anyhow, I thought it would be a neat addition to have when the cache was last found when you scroll over the cache icon on the map along with the CO's name, cache name, date hidden...blah, blah, blah. To me that would be a quick little guide to help decide if you even want to click on the cache page. I dunno....what are your thoughts? Do I need to learn queries more efficiently or is it a good idea? TL;DR.....Good idea to show when cache was last found on the info baloon that pops up on the cache map?
  12. I vaguely remember hearing about the original when it caught on and was just getting started. At the time, GPS units were out of my price range so I didn't persue it any further. Fast forward to 2008 and I read an article in my scouting magazine about a troop in California that would go geocaching on the weekends (a Venture Crew). I was reminded of the game and read that it was FREE to sign up and that you could find them without a geep. I found my first 7 without a geep until I came to my first multi.....I went and bought one then! I introduced my scouts to it and have been at it ever since. I LOVE being outdoors and just searching for stuff.
  13. I'm into finding lonely caches along with my friends. We recently found a night-time cache that hadn't been found in three years and two others(in the same park) that hadn't been found in two years. Not a great neighborhood......LOL! I think that's the most "fun" I'm having at the time. My desires seem to change the longer I stay with geocaching. Started out just finding them...then went to geocoins/TB's......then FTF's.....then night caches.....then powertrails (not really for me because of the logging of them.....) and now lonely caches. What could be next?
  14. Hmmmm......is pretty sad.....Is it a freakishly hard puzzle or something? Either way, rude post.
  15. Welcome to the game! It's VERY addicting.
  16. It will help some but won't completely erase the issue. I have a member's only cache with pathtags and have some come up missing now and again. Missing in the sense that I HOPE they trade even....not just take them. I was thinking about turning it into a multi.....thing is, multi's aren't so popular around here so they may sit for a while.
  17. I guess the only "team" name I can go by now is "We AAAAARGH NTX" or "We are North Texas". I plan on going to the Texas Challenge this year and we compete by region. I've been wanting to go for over a year now. TWO MORE WEEKS!!!!!
  18. Zip ties are good but you can also get some steel cable for pretty cheap at the home project stores. My friends use that here in Texas to keep their ammo cans from walking away or being swept away from floods.
  19. Thanks for the compliments, folks. I really appreciate it. As far as the cryptex pic, I did move it to spell a word, but it is not the word you need to open it. The modifications I did were using a slightly larger PVC pipe for the moving rings, PVC caps for the ends and an epoxy made for plastics to hold the stationary rings instead of screws. Thank you for the info!
  20. You, sir, have provided a very gracious gift to geocachers everywhere! I'm an electrical contractor so I have plenty of material to work with....this will keep me busy. Thank you so much!
  21. *burns box of blue ribbons I was sending to finders of multi's*
  22. Wow! That is great that they're willing to offer that experience. I hope it catches on in other towns.
  23. Aw man.....the pictures make it even more personal. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, ya'll. Even more so that he was just a young man. I'm sure that he was full of energy and enjoyed caching.
