  1. @silver113fox, Assuming you can't get warranty satisfaction on your Garmin battery pack. you might try a "Refresh" or "Break-in" cycle, available on many chargers/analyzers, such as in this thread
  2. @ jagmagana, Did not see an answer to your question...resize your template to 97% to avoid edges overhanging bevel in screen. 97% work great. Thanks for the template.
  3. Simple enough, done! Thanks again for being there.
  4. How can I delete the 4 sample Birdseye view maps and 1 USGS sample map of the Grand Canyon listed in the "Configure Maps" section? They are cluttering up the display, and I don't need sample maps of Switzerland, France, etc. I want to delete, not just disable. Thanks in advance.
  5. Thanks guys for sharing your experience, and photos. Pretty good summary of what's out there for me and other hikers. The button clip has worked well for me on my 60 series for 5 years, but time to move on. Cheers.
  6. Anybody have any thoughts/ideas on how to mount the 600 Series on a backpack shoulder strap firmly, without dangling from a biner? Can a button/stud be mounted on the back like on the 60 Series below? Thanks in advance.
  7. http://goo.gl/BzJPn ...."Lightsquared and the GPS community is heating up again with new fronts opening at the FCC and Congress."
  8. Since the Garmin USB cord went bad on my 60CSx, I've been using a cable from an old Motorola cellphone for the past few years. Generic USB cable OK.
  9. Re: waterproof...3 years ago I went down the Little Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, with the 60Csx strapped to my belt.... still using it today. http://www.everytrai...cture_id=389592 FYI, I still have the tracklog during the immersion. Cheers, Jim
  10. Be sure to take another backup set of batteries, such as eneloopes...I've had 3 of the 4 NiZn Powergenix die on me...won't hold charge. Also, Powergenix has not answered their customer phone support since last December. As a previous poster observed, they've moved on, and so have I. Good luck Buddy!
  11. Topofusion has a climbing algorithm that you can customize to your liking, should you think it's necessary. http://www.topofusion.com/climb.php Alternatively, if your not a precisionist, and don't need to consider the exact elev gain of each step...which your low precision handheld GPSr will not give you....simply use a smoothing technique. Reassign the elevation data points to your track from GPSVisualizer, or Topofusion, or any other free site. There digital elevation model (DEM) is based on sparse sampling, giving you "smoothed" elev track, with errors of course. But should be good enough for hiking. Any commercial (not free) software such as Topo!, Maptech, etc has a built-in DEM with sparse sampling, so that would also work, for a $$$.
  12. You might want to try a cheap way, MetroGuide made routable with MetroGold, as mentioned in the following post/thread: http://forums.Groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=235972&view=findpost&p=4127865
  13. Interesting article...I suspect that PowerGenix's QC problems caught up with them.
  14. I think Powergenix is out of business....I've been trying to reach them for the past 2 weeks by tele and email, with no response. You won't get any response at any of the corporate extensions. (858) 547-7300 (858)-652-3228 Stick with the eneloops! Cheers, jim
  15. I've just experienced my first bad cell of the 8 PowerGenix Ni-Zn's I bought on Nov 19, 2010. Only will discharge for 4 hrs compared to 22 hrs of other 7 AA PowerGenix cells. I'm using the white charger (single cell charger, but charging in pairs). Thank heavens for the old reliable eneloops. Cheers, jim
  16. ....."This is just one data point, and it would be interesting to hear from others who have tested the NiZn's in their GPSr's. Anybody else have data to share?" Anybody?
  17. Just a final post....I've been using the NiZn's in my 60Csx for the past month or so, and I'm convinced that the higher voltage has improved the compass/bearing issue that I've experienced. I've done several off-trail hikes with route finding, and the bearing function works great. Cheers, jim
  18. Both tests were at room temp. I'd say that they're about equal, at room temp.
  19. For you "mother of all GPSr's" users who are concerned about whether the NiZn's will fry your 60Csr, I can report success with my test. The chart below was developed by measuring the voltage across the cells, in the 60Csx while in operation. After 21 hrs of continuous, the cells were exhausted and the 60Csx shut down. This compares to 22 hrs for my Sanyo eneloops, tested similarly. Yesterday I field tested my 60Csx with the NiZn's, hiking at 12,000' for 6 hours at temps of 15°F on the Continental Divide, with the GPSr fully exposed to the wind on my shoulder strap...no problems. This is just one data point, and it would be interesting to hear from others who have tested the NiZn's in their GPSr's. Anybody else have data to share? Cheers, Jim
  20. Yeah, the voltage on these NiZn puppies rated 1.6v can be 1.8v fresh out of the charger. Note that the Garmin spec says "turn off", as in blow a fuse?
  21. Thanks ecanderson for your vote. I don't know where I got this from................ So you see my concern?...kick in the shins won't bring back my beloved smok'd 60Csx. Cheers, jim
  22. Any successes?, or any fried 60Csx's? Thx in advance. jim
  23. Any thoughts about the published 8%/month self discharge rate for the NiZns?
