  1. Coggins, you rule! It works just like you said. Thank you very much.
  2. There are some new projection caches up locally and instead of using the old compass I was wondering if my Venture HC can project a waypoint. I have looked over the manual and through my unit's menus and such but it doesn't seem (at least to me) that my GPSr supports that type of operation. Alternately, I know that I can project out a waypoint in Mapsource but I was wondering if anyone knew if it could be done on the Venture HC. Thanks, lil'hobo
  3. Ralfcoder, thanks for the PFD advice. As it turns out I have been looking at jackets lately. I didn't really give any thought to how it would feel in the boat. That makes a lot of sense. I had only really focused on it fitting and not being under my arms to interfere with my paddling. And thanks for the bookmark list too, I appreciate it.
  4. Thanks everyone, I was just getting a little nervous that my GPS might be going on the fritz. Thanks again, lil'hobo
  5. I have a Venture HC that has recently (last month or so) been very slow to acquire satellites and not showing the little WAAS Ds in the sat bars. I haven't moved or anything and it always gets turned on from my house, which was where I first set it up. It's still using the same update from back in January, nothing changed there. I even tried new batteries with no effect. What I did next was to reacquire the satellites as if it was the first time I ever used it (choosing the new location option). Also, I left it sit unmoved for approximately two hours with a clear sky. It did the trick. Now it picks the sats up fast and has WAAS lock too. So my question is, is this normal? Do you have to reset them up from time to time? Or, is this the indication of a problem starting?
  6. Well, I am still pretty new to EasyGPS, however, the main differences I see between the two is that in transferring waypoints to your GPS EasyGPS allows some manipulation of the data. You can send cache ID# and name or cache Id# and decrypted hints to your unit. (Mines a Venture HC, maybe others allow more or less changes/info?) Now on the map side, EasyGPS doesn't display a base map or anything, it just shows the caches in their relative positions to each other. On Mapsource I have Topo 2008 installed so when I look at it the image is just like looking at it on my GPS. Plus, Mapsource is how I transfer bits of the Topo map to my Venture HC. So for me, I'll probably just use EasyGPS to transfer the waypoints (caches) into my GPS. That way I could see the hints because I don't really need to see the name of the cache, just its ID for logging purposes. And for looking at where I have been, where caches are, or any kind of mapping stuff, I'll use Mapsource. As I become more familiar with EasyGPS, I'm sure I'll find it does a lot more that I just don't know about right now, so my thoughts could change []. Hope this helps.
  7. Thanks for the tip, StarBrand. Once I figured out how to do it, EasyGPS is kinda cool. I like how instead of the cache name you can put the hints in, plus it decrypts it for you too.
  8. Thanks for your input. I kind of thought that EasyGps was more or less just a free Mapsource type program. I think I'll try that GSAK and see how the POIs look on the venture. That would be kind of nice to get more page info on the unit. Thanks again!
  9. I have been enjoying my recent upgrade to premium membership and its additional features. I have a Venture HC and download my pocket queries into Mapsource to load onto my GPSr. It works great, however, I am wondering if EasyGPS has some additional benefit over using the Mapsource program? Does it display more cache information on the GPSr or is it just a different means to the same end. While the Venture HC will never be paperless, the more info in it the better in my opinion. And if EasyGPS can do it, I'll give it a try. Any thoughts or opinions would be appreciated. Thanks lil'hobo
  10. I really liked that old show. I mean, who wouldn't want one of those silence chambers they talked in. Or, a shoe phone.
  11. My mom had a SISU bumper sticker on her car back in the early 80s. We're not Finnish, but apparently this bumper sticker was kind of a fad back then.
  12. Whenever I read cache logs or the postings on the site I always find myself interested in what everyone's caching name stands for or means. Some of course are self explanitory, however, most aren't. I often wonder if it was a random decision, or some deeper meaning. If you would like to share I'd enjoy reading about what it means. Take mine, lil'hobo, for example. I chose it for several reasons. The first is as a kid we lived not to far from some railroad tracks and on a quiet day/night you could hear the train drive by. I always had the secret desire to do the hobo thing, you know, jump on a boxcar and see where it would go. Of course, common sense has always got the better of me so I never did. Still, the thought of a rambling existence, however impractical, continues to hold some appeal. Secondly, I used to have a camper that was a "lil hobo" model. Lastly, I named my fishing boat the lil'hoboat in keeping with my camper's model. So, when I started caching, with its wandering around and rummaging about in search of treasure, the name lil'hobo just seemed a natural fit.
  13. Thanks for all of your inputs, now I just have to wait for it to warm up. Although it has been raining really hard lately and my backyard has a lot of standing water in it. Hmmmm
  14. I was just at the local army navy store and they have the military cammenga compasses for $50. I always carry a compass (suunto A 10) in addition to my GPS when hiking, just in case. I was just wondering if this compass is worth it. I am no compass master by any means, but I do know how to use one for some basic navigation. Is there really a difference, other than the cool factor? And if there is a difference, does it last a long time considering the price? I would think that for $50 it should last forever. Thanks
  15. I have been wanting a Kayak forever and my girlfriend bought me one for my birthday. How cool is that? Anyhow, this summer when it warms up here in Michigan I want to get out and use it to do some day trips, and maybe an overnight stay or two. Anyone have any advice for me? It's not a rapids kayak or anything, just a ten foot pelican with a little trunk on the stern, padded seat, foot pads etc. There seems to be plenty of space inside for me and some gear. And its color exactly matches my Venture HC, however, so clearly it was meant for caching. There are a few caches near me that are accessible only by water, so I plan on hitting those as well. So, any thoughts, advice, warnings that anyone would like to share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  16. I was experiencing the same problem too, or so I thought. The Venture HC does hold up to 500, however, when sorting them by nearest it will only display the closest 50. I checked here on the forum and they let me know how to find all of your caches, so I'll pay it forward to you. If you display the caches by name it will show all of the caches loaded on your unit by alpha order, not by distance. To display them by name you press the menu button while on the geocache (or waypoint) screen and select name. A screen will pop up prompting you to enter a name but just hit the X button on the side of your unit and then it will display all the caches (or waypoints). Also, while I don't know anything about GSAK, you can download all of your caches from your unit onto the Mapsource program. It's kind of nice because it will show both found and unfound caches you have on your unit. Who knew that program was actually good for something? Again, I can't take credit for this, all the helpful cachers here instructed me on this. As I side note, I am writing a paper for one of my college classes right now also and I keep wanting to research and do in-text citations and a References page so as to give proper credit to those who helped. Once this semester is over I am going to go on a caching bender I think.
  17. StarBrand, thanks for the mapsource tip. That works out real nice. It's a good way to double check and its quick too.
  18. I recently saw some chrome plated brass pill containers which were about 1 1/2 in tall and 3/4 in wide at the local army navy store for only $1.99. While they aren't the real thing, they do have an o ring seal and a key chain attachment on top. Only thing is they are quite shiny.
  19. Thanks Red90, I see now, I didn't realize by hitting the X button on the side the name entry screen would disappear and then allow scrolling through them all. I kept going to the menu screen and switching back before trying that. I thought that you had to search by entering the name every time, which didn't make sense. I wonder if the search by nearest option can be expanded to show more than 50? It would be real nice to have them all grouped in order by distance like it does. Thanks again.
  20. I have a Venture HC and have been adding many local caches to it, however, the waypoint page as well as the geocaching page will only show the closest 50 in the unit. So, other than doing a waypoint name search I cannot tell if I have loaded more distant caches on it. Is there a way to allow it to show all of the waypoints/caches loaded in it? The reason I ask is I am going to head out and do a day or two of caching soon away from home and I would like to have an easy way to scroll through the info (all caches/waypoints) on my unit to be sure I did not miss downloading some. Only being able to see the closest 50 waypoints doesn't work very well for me. Thanks in advance for your insight.
  21. Thanks everyone for the input, I think I am going to go for it and try to trim two shields out of one. Sounds like leaving the paper backing on when cutting is highly recommended, so I'll do that. If it works, it'll be like getting two for the price of one. If not, well, I guess I'll break down and get the proper ones. Thanks again.
  22. I want to install a Zagg invisibleshield screen cover on both my Venture HC and my GPS 12, however, I don't want to spend anymore than necessary. The local electronics stores have some invisibleshields for $15 or so that fit the screens of various cell phones. So, I was thinking to purchase it and then cut covers out of it for both my units. I know that Zagg won't warranty the screens if cut/modified etc, however, I was wondering has anyone cut them to fit? I am not sure if it'll cut properly due to its design or not. I have really sharp carving knives and the means to trace out a good pattern but I just don't want to waste my money if the screen protector will not work as good (or at all)after being cut. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.
  23. Talking about ammo cans, I was just dreaming up an idea. I always seem to have some stuff to lug around if I'm out for a while (lunch, extra jacket, etc) and I do have a back rack on my bike. And I hate riding with a backpack on. I should make some saddle bags out of ammo cans that attach to my rack's side bars. Maybe that would be cool. They could mount down lower maybe to avoid being top heavy. Then I could always have an ammo can just in case like 9key does. Hmmmm. Of course I risk turning my bike into something heavier than it already is. (early 90's Raleigh Mtn bike with steel frame, rides awesome but heavy as a tank).
