  3. Alrighty here ya go. Just after catching the bugger: (aint digital zoom great?) Look! We done did caught us a biggun! Ahhh it still makes us laugh... CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  4. You think we'd let this debacle go unrecorded? Pics were definitely taken. We'll post em when we get home. At the moment we have no way of getting them off the digital camera. Duct tape was discounted due to our distance from the cache (30 feet down, 20 feet out), and angle away from it. After analyzing the geometry required to accomplish the objective, it became clear that the angle of incident was such that didn't allow for enough force at the contact area without a direct hit; very unlikely given our position. A stick with a magnet was considered, but was quickly discounted for essentially the same reason as the duct tape. Besides the RC car was WAAAAAY cooler. CacheCreatures are spreading... 5. Alright, this one goes down in the history books. My wife and I are on vacation and out on the hunt for a few caches. A particular one has us stumped for a few minutes until she says..."nah, it can't be behind there?" We look and sure enough, theres the micro, stuck to the back of a sign, hanging over a 30 foot drop! It seems perfectly reachable so I reach over, and nudge it just a bit. "ahh I've got it... NOOOO..." *tonk tink tink slllllsh*. Dead silence. We look down, and there it was. Utterly and completely out of reach. At first we laughed; this can't be for real right? Did we just destroy someone's lovingly placed cache? Then we cried; we just destroyed someone's lovingly placed cache. Then we cursed in anger; why would someone lovingly place a cache out there anyway?!? So heres the situation: the micro is down there, we're up here. During the 10 minutes we've been there, we've already seen a handful of muggles, a security guard and a police officer. Up here is a very clear sign warning of a huge fine and serious jail time if we try to get down there. Do you risk the fine and jail time for a mint tin? Do you leave it and yell at the placer for the clearly ridiculous placement (hmm guess the other 10 finders were just lucky) or do you leave it and grovel endlessly with the placer explaining how freakish of an accident it was... An hour, a visit to the local hobby store, some string, a remote controlled car, a tin buckle, some skillful (remote control) driving, some very nice string manipulating and a bit of luck later, we had our solution. Dropping the car down, driving it to the cache, using its magnetism to clamp to the buckle and some very steady pulling up retrieved the cache! We musta looked like couple of deranged fishermen, but dammit, we had our white whale!! You should have seen the looks on the faces of the muggles as they tried to figure out why two grown adults were playing with a remote control car on a string down in a dry waterway. So what situations have you gotten into while retrieving a cache? How did you get out of them? In our case, the $70 spent was nothing compared to our dignity! Imagine the shame had we had to leave it there... CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  6. Love the idea. Any time someone can be exposed to something new (for those that don't regularly listen to opera) doing something they already like, I think they have a much better chance of appreciating that thing. Since we're on the topic, I've just got to mention Lisa Gerrard. She has become my favorite vocalist. Not opera per say, but her voice has got to be one of the most powerful I've ever heard. You might know her from the movie Gladiator... (or maybe from Dead Can't Dance?) Check out her solo stuff if you're into the darker side of what the human voice has to offer. (If "Unfolding" from her album "Duality" doesn't shake your soul nothing will) CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!

  11. Nilbog! ha ha Those are great. A few more.... If you hear eerie music playing and you are not near a radio. If a short woman with a sqeeky voice tells you something about "the light"...you might want to listen. If your friend starts talking about how cool it would be to be a vampire...humm...this says it all: http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20031009/od_nm/odd_vampire_dc_1 CacheCreatures are spreading... 12. What we like to do for our item is pick up a rock near the area, paint/decorate it and turn it into a cache creature. It is fun because it allows us to hang out in the area, take in the surroundings. We've had a great time so far. Our first one has become our avatar. We would love it if people traded for them. If there is a theme we also leave an appropriate item as well. CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  13. We haven't get come across anyone while searching....yet, but if we did, I think I would say Hi and open up a dialog. See what thier prefernce was that day. Who knows if they have been there forever and are frustrated or if they want to still go it alone. I think meeting others and seeing thier searching techniques or lack there of might be fun. 14. Hi, first of all congratulations on THINKING about getting a dog before just running out and getting one. Remember they are a commitment and will rely on you for all of their needs and care. Owning a dog can be extremely rewarding if you are willing to put in the time it takes to develop a good relationship. A website that I found helpful for many prospective dog owners are the AKC website, also this one : www.dogbreedinfo.com It raises good questions that should help guide you to your decision. Different breeds do have different tendencies based on body structure and other things. Choosing a breed that fits your lifestyle is a very good place to begin, but you can not base your decision solely on bred choice since all dogs (like people) have their own personalities. Sunsister and Stunod made very good points. Being a Vet Tech I have a ton of insight and info I can share and would be more than happy to. If you'd like I can mail to you some awesome info all about breed choice, training and things to know before and after getting a dog. Just let me know. : ) We currently have a Golden Retriever mix (a shelter rescue) who has been FANTASTIC. Smart, loving, loyal and very willing to please. Grew up with a German Shepherd. We had him since I was 18 months old until I was 14. He was loyal, protective, great with the whole family. Two of my favorites. I personally love mixed breeds the best. You tend to get less medical issues that are indicative to particular breeds and can be adorable as well. Hope that helps! CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!

  17. Something I'd like to recommend for the taller Cacher is the JanSport Goshawk 40. I'm 6'9" and it fits my long torso pretty well. And of course, it holds everything we could need and then some. I use it in conjunction with a Platypus Water Tank 6. Yep, thats right... I carry up to 6 liters of water. We like to go all day, and I definitely drink it. Also, its nice to have backup for the puppy. I used to go with a Camelbak TransAlp There were three issues I had with the pack. 1) It was a bit to small in the torso area. 2) The pocket layout just didn't seem to make sense. 3) When the reservoir was full, much of the cargo area was taken up. My wife uses the Camelbak Hawk She loves it. It fits her perfectly and carries just enough. CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  18. Well I sincerely hope virtuals aren't discontinued. The one we've done (yes we're still very new) was really a neat experience. We were directed to an area that was essentially in our backyard, and we learned a little something new about an area we though we'd had figured out. Also, I don't know about anyone else, but when we set out for a virtual, its a different approach. Our focus is to learn something or to experience an area in a new way. Of course these are results of regular caches as well, but with regulars the primary goal (and hence the approach) is just different. Maybe its just a frame of mind thing... One thing I noticed about the guidelines: they are very subjective. There seems to be a lot of leeway for the decision maker to approve or deny the cache. Maybe an effort can be made to standardize (even further) the requirements and thus avoid any ill will (since the rules, all rules, would be clearly stated and thus limiting the approvers subjectivity and/or the applicants expectations)? 19. I have the same one as ScottyJ. It is perfect for just about everything. I would also recommend one with a bladder system. Once you try one you won't want to carry water bottles anymore. Check out e-bay. CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  20. Tried on several pairs and the Asolo works best for me. Added an Asolo insert for extra cushioning support, works great. CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  21. Just to echo Byron, adding a PCI serial card to your desktop sounds like the way you're wanting to go. I'd suggest heading into Fry's (I see you live pretty close to one). They will have probably 4 or 5 different models you can choose from. If you ever need more than one or two, I can recommend a card I use all the time for motion control (robots). It only has 64 serial ports though... is that enough? CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  22. My wife tried editing a post last night, and as a result 4 separate copies of her post popped up on the board. She alerted the admin, and since the edit button has been removed. I'm guessing they are trying to fix the problem. Lol or not. There's the edit button CacheCreatures are spreading... They can hide, but they can't run!
  23. quote:Originally posted by CacheCreatures: quote:Originally posted by CacheCreatures:Hi there. As you may already know from my previous logs I am a veterinary technician and love helping out anyway I can when it comes to dogs. Depending on the region of the US that you live will depend on the types of vaccinations and preventives that you will need to use. I will break it down and keep it simple. Anything you'd like me to elaborate on just let me know. Vaccines: Rabies is a must, stay current on that. Usually once they are adults it is every 3 years, although some states require it annually. Another crucial vaccine is a the distemper/parvo combo. Given annually. Lymes helps, but is not a core vaccine to give. If your dog is prone to getting ticks though, keep them current on this one. In general a good flea products is a must. Fleas are dormant when it gets below 62 degrees, but how often do we let it get that cold in our homes? (the little stinkers can live in our carpets for months) _Advantage_ (flea only) is an awesome flea product-topical, once a month. Can use every 3 weeks if you have a bad flea problem. You can use a _Preventic_ collar(ticks) in combination with this, just be sure and change it every 3 months. _Frontline_ (flea & tick) is pretty good. Although it doesn't seem to work as well for the fleas. Now there is also _Advantics_(flea,tick,mosquito) this is fairly new on the market and so far has been fabulous. It is just as good as Advantage for fleas, but it also repels ticks and also repels mosquito's. Right now I have our dog on Advantics. YOU CAN'T USE THIS ON CATS. Don't bother with the crap that you get at the pet store. It doesn't work and can cause skin problems and Revolution is kinda sucky too. Also Heartworm preventative is important. (Once again based on where you live) 2 good ones are Heartgard and Interceptor. There is also a 6 month injectable one called Proheart. Any of these choices are great. Heartworm is carried by mosquitos and is fatal is not treated. Other than that I would recommend that when you take your happy tail wagging companion with you to check there paws when you get home and brush them. This will be an opportunity to check for ticks, any scratches, thistles, etc. Having a first-aid kit that is stocked for your pooch is good too. Bring water and poop bags (cache in/poop out) Ok, so I thought I was going to keep this simple. Hope it all helps. Joyce _CacheCreatures are spreading... 24. Hmm that is basically what I was getting at, however it appears that, with both systems, it's up to the cache creator to rate his/her cache? I was considering a more general, per visit, approach. It would seem to me that the more people visit each cache, the more normalized the ratings would become. As you point out GPSaxophone, we are subject to the full range of opinion; but when only a single rating is seen (that of the creator) I'd argue that the level of subjectivity is at its most extreme. Lets dream a little bit. What would be ideal? Maybe a sheet like that of ClayJar's is presented to each reviewer when they log a find? CacheCreatures are spreading...
