For me, I log the TB as 'visited' if I physically had it with me (sometimes I even make a point of taking it out of my bag) and if I think the TB owner would be interested in the cache being visited - like, if it's relevant to the TB mission. I recently found a cardboard toilet paper tube that had little plastic caps at both ends (I think it was a temporary container that has since been replaced). I've been having the same problem, and I've just found that clicking the image link from the cache description page (just above the logs) works OK, even if the gallery link doesn't. At least, that did it for the cache I'm looking for now. I'm using Firefox, by the way...
