  1. What the heck? Why can't you transport firewood? How else do you get it from the wood lot to your house? How is cache camo supposed to be firewood, anyway? Personally, I don't believe in laws that could never be enforced, but I'd love to take a read of that one. The State of Michigan is trying to stop the spread of the Emerald Ash Borer. You can read about it here. I haven't heard of anyone being pulled over and checked but I have seen the state police checking vehicles at rest areas and at the Mackinaw bridge. You can be fined $1,000.00 to $250,000.00 for transporting ash wood outside of the quarantined area.

  7. It would help if we knew where you were located. In the Lansing, Michigan area, there are tons (I didn't really weigh them) at the Foxhole PX store. Pretty reasonable prices ($4.00 $6.00) if I remember correctly.
  8. Keep in mind that your GPSr was probably 16 to 30 feet off while trying to find the cache, and the hider's GPSr was also probably 16-30 feet off when they hid the cache. That means that you may have to look in up to a 60 foot circle to find the cache. Also, you're starting this hobby in one of the toughest conditions of all, SNOW!!! Don't let your first experience get you down. This is a very fun hobby that does take some time to become proficient at. Make sure that the caches that you're looking for have a difficulty rating of 2 or less, and if you can find some that indicate that they aren't on the ground may also help. Just don't give up on this hobby yet. It took us finding about 40-50 caches before we could walk up to an area and have a pretty good idea where the cache was going to be. Patience Grasshopper!
  9. They do. I see RVs in my town's Wal-Mart all the time. Thinking of going on a light post Wal-Mart caching spree??? Is there any other kind of caching spree??? Seriously though, we camp alot and in the past had always searched for a few caches close to the campground (usually a Michigan State Park). We never planned our camping trips around caching, but always planned caching around camping. Now that we've discovered paperless caching and can have 500 of the closest caches loaded in our GPSr and PDA, we'll do alot more caching while camping. I doubt that we will ever plan a camping trip around a cache though.

  12. My immediate thought was, I like that. There is definitely an FTF competition in my area. I'm going to look for something similar to leave.

  14. Currently have a Garmin eTrex Legend. Previously had a Magellan ColorTrak. I like both units but prefer the smaller size of the Garmin.
  15. I've been looking for a neodymium magnet that I could use to attach an Altoids tin to the side of a metal building. This might work. Check out the warning and shipping message.
  16. One thing that I have found that really helps me when I'm having trouble finding a cache is to approach it from a different direction. If I approach a cache from the south and can't find it, I'll walk about 100 feet to the north and turn around and approach it from that direction. Many times I'll walk right to it after approaching from a different direction. Another trick that sometimes works for me is to stop looking at my GPSr when I start to get close (60 feet). I like to walk about 100 - 150 feet away and then start walking fast in the direction that my GPSr is pointing. Once I hit 60 feet from my target I stop looking at my GPSr and I then take another 30 steps (hey, it works for me) in the direction that it was pointing and I will usually end up very close.
