  1. I've gone alone a few times. I was more worried about something happening to me like falling down a cliff or breaking my leg than anything else. I much prefer to go with my kids along. I also feel pretty safe in my area. The few times I went by myself I made sure someone knew where I was going and I took my cell phone. (they weren't very remote caches and were within cell phone range!!) I've decided that going alone is not for me and will wait for the weekend and for the kids to get out of school for the summer. In the meantime, I will hunt for the few "urban" caches around here.
  2. I found ammo cans at a store called UFS (Unclaimed Freight "something"). I consider it kind of a "Big Lots" on steroids. I guess it's a surplus store for everything (not specifically army surplus) but I was in there for something else and there was a pallet sitting in the middle of the aisle full of ammo cans. I only bought a couple as I'm not really into hiding yet. I think they were less than $5 each.
  3. My son will always take cool looking rocks if they are in a cache. He also likes anything animal related (pictures, little plastic animals, stickers)--he's 8. My ten year old daughter rarely takes anything but she has taken rings and bracelets....
  4. I asked a similiar question in another forum. Here's the link. There is lots of good information about how elevation is determined.
  5. I was in a "Celebrations" store (don't know if that is a chain or not) which is a party supplies store and there was a sign saying you could order thru them Oriental Tradings stuff and pay no shipping.
  6. Do you mean how do you find the cache PAGES by location? Like, I'm going to be in a specific area in Germany, how do I find out what caches are there??? I've never tried to do that. I think the UK you can use their equivalent zip code, but I don't know about other countries.
  7. Thanks again. That is exactly what I needed to know!
  8. Thanks for the help and the links! ARe the ones that are the sensor types with built it altimeters more expensive?? Are they more accurate?
  9. That is my question...How is elevation determined? Does it use satellite data or is it barometric pressure? It's something I never thought about until someone just asked me. Is it different for different models? I have an etrex Venture. I did a search and didn't find the exact answer, but I did see mention of people reading pressure with their GPSr. Can I do that with mine??? Thanks for the help!
  10. Have you ever been out geocaching and ended up at the hospital instead??? I received an email from my brother in law last night and imagine my surprise when I followed the link and read a story about how my DAD ended up in the hospital. I was very impressed with my BIL's restraint to not continue looking for the cache but instead take my Dad to the hospital. Here's the story. Everything turned out okay and now he will have a story to tell when they get home!! Hey OzGuff, feel free to elaborate on this story!!!
  11. There is a library cache in my area where the owner had "made" a book about geocaching that explained what it was and had some other info in it. It was placed in the reference section so it couldn't be checked out. It had a call number and was probably in the card catalog! (the first step of the multi was a brass disk that had the call number on it that was outside the library--you then had to find that book using the call number.) I think all the librarians know it is there (it is a small library). In fact, I wrote something down wrong on a previous step of the multi and asked the librarian for help. She knew exactly what I was talking about.
  12. You guys are good! I usually take pictures while geocaching and then scrapbook with them, but mine don't look so professional! I don't have a geocaching scrapbook, I just have them in my books along with birthdays and such. If I can get up the nerve, I might scan a page in...
  13. I agree, it is up to the cache owner. I just was upset that someone thought we were wrecking the game for others. Anyway, I hadn't been back to the listing in awhile and just checked it out and found this note from the cache owner: "We are glad you all are enjoying the cache. We have enjoyed seeing the pictures some of you have posted. Just to let you know, we will encrypt any logs that reveal the exact location of the cache." And guess what! My picture is still there! In the case of this cache, I guess they don't really care.
  14. I read the forums quite often, but have never posted. This topic, however, hit a chord with me. I usually cache with my kids and my daughter has her own account (9yrs old). We try to post a lot of pictures, because, hey, this is supposed to fun, right? Anyway, she gets all excited one day because she has an email. We open it and it is someone telling her she is ruining the game for everyone because she has posted a picture of her climbing a tree to the cache. I had it clearly labeled HUGE spoiler and even said in my log that the picture would be a spoiler for those who have not been there! (this was not the cache owner) Isn't a spoiler picture just like a hint? I mean you have to actually go to another page to see it. If you don't want the hint you don't decrypt. If you don't want to see the spoiler picture, don't click on it? Am I missing something???? Is it mostly the owners that don't want the hint to help others or people who can't help themselves and then get mad when they look??? In thinking about this, I guess it is up to the cache owner to decide what they want. I would have deleted the photo, but the owner never said anything to me!
