Very cool. I could see a version of this game set up by a caching group using lat/lon as checkpoints.

Personally, I'd also like the option of including parking coordinates.
One sort-of-solution I have used in the past is to make your cache a two part multi where the first clue cache (containing only the coords for the final cache location) is placed near the prefferred parking area and the final cache is located on down the trail from there. Of course this has backfired on me too when folks just hike back to the car and then drive closer to the final cache location instead of following the intended trail.

To mrcpu and yorelken, thanks for your suggestions but maybe I didn't word my question properly... I've no problems locating caches near Belleville... what I was looking for were personal recommendations from local area cachers for caches you have actually hunted that you found to be particularly enjoyable.

Hi all,
Does anyone have any recommendations for good caches hidden in/near Belleville? Within say, a 100 Km radius? We'll be visiting Canada at the end of this month.

... a user could simply click and drag a long narrow rectangle (or series of rectangles) on a map? (as in along an interstate route)
I don't know anything about how one might go about setting something like that up, or how much work would be involved, but that would seem to me to be a super easy way to get what you were looking for... from the users point of view anyway.

Greetings,
I recently had the opportunity to give a presentation on geocaching to Maryland Park officials. The invitation was extended by a Mr. John Marshall who is the Chief of Special Operations for the Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and, a very enthusiastic supporter of geocaching!
The meeting was attended by representatives of nearly all of Maryland's park systems... State, County, local, regional, etc... The purpose of the meeting was to familiarize park officials with the basic concept of geocaching, how the GPS system works and how the GPS unit is used in locating a cache. Also discussed were some of the benefits geocachers bring to the park systems such as cache-in-trash-out, increased attendance, identification of trail maintenance issues etc..
The presentation was very warmly received including a round of applause at it's conclusion. Mr. Marshall also indicated his desire to hold a workshop in the Fall devoted entirely to geocaching and is looking for additional volunteers to assist in giving a more comprehensive presentation to include pairing off with rangers and other park officials to lead them on geocache hunts. Anyone interested in attending/participating in this workshop may contact me and I will put them in touch with Mr. Marshall.
Mr. Marshall also indicated that his goal was to have one central contact point (phone number/email?)that geocachers can address for information/assistance on hiding a cache in any of Marland's parks. For now though, folks wishing to inform park officials of their desire to hide a cache in a Maryland park can at least expect the folks on the other end of the line to know what it is all about.

There was a lot of discussion about (and pictures of) different types of cache/cacher trading cards in this topic from the old forums.
I created my own rookie year cacher trading card and left a few in some local caches. To my knowlege only one was ever retrieved. Recently, while caching in Pennsylvania, I came across a cache that included trading cards of the local park rangers, very cool.
I guess I'd like to see a form on the website that one could fill out, add a picture to, and then print and laminate at home. Kind of like those electronic greeting card sites.
Barring that possibility I'd like to see the minimum quantity get down below a hundred or so... that way you could update your cards every year or after a given milestone or something.

I put batteries in my change pocket all the time! Guess I better change my habits...

I use plain old alkaline batteries. Put them in my digital camera first and then when the camera say's they're 'dead' I take 'em out of there and put them into my GPSr for another 5 hours or so of use.

While it may not entirely prevent plundering, the extra steps involved in creating an account and logging in before one can see the coordinates could help some and just might encourage more folks to participate in the full geocaching experience.

I read and post here regularly. I follow the forums and yes, I know I could do a search and probably find a few examples of what I'm looking for, but...
... if you have had any positive experiences in asking for and obtaining permission to place a cache (or caches) in a given park I'm asking you to please respond here.
Any situation at all where you have worked succesfully to get permission to place a cache.
Whom did you speak with? What benefits did the park receive? (increased attendance etc...) How willing were park officials to work with you? Did they even know what you were talking about? Etc...
Really, anything at all positive. Did you or your cache result in a trail being cleaned up? Were you or your cache responsible for pointing out trail maintenance issues, etc?
I've already printed out about 100 pages of cache logs and forum postings but thought I would be remiss if I didn't ask here as well.
I need hard evidence... not just your comments here but a link to your cache page where the park service has chimed in or a copy of a letter you may have received... can you help?

On the amateur bands I believe you are required to ID every TEN minutes, or at the conclusion of your conversation (whichever is less).
Not sure about GMRS but it would make sense they would stick to the same time limit.
BTW... This does not mean you have to pick up the radio and ID yourself every ten minutes just 'cause you have the unit with you and turned on. The ten minute ID is only required when your current conversation ends or exceeds the ten minute interval.
It's really not a big deal and you can toss it in just about anytime with a simple statement such as... "N3YKX for ID."

You can place a cache underwater, no rules against it. Just be sure to rate your cache appropriately. Search the forums and I'm sure you'll find some threads on this topic.

I hate to be the one to bump this back up to the top of the radar screen but I've been out of town and came upon this late. The allegations made by the initial poster (whomever he may be) simply aren't true.
As far as having our members approving caches in Maryland, I think it's a good thing. Who would know better the parks, the area, the landscape, and yes, the rules (in State Parks anyway) than the folks who live and cache here and worked to hash out an agreement with the parks to allow any geocaching at all? I would think having locals approve local caches would make sense anywhere.
