  1. Good idea. Considering that many never visit the forums and/or know of instructional postings or websites, a straight forward explaination may be the most information they've ever been given. If you can incorporate the instructions with the seeking, that would be great too. Just try not to bore them. "Try not to bore them..." Uh-oh, I'm doomed. Bueller? Bueller? The cache itself is rather easy - it will be a park-n-grab. I'm gonna hafta stick with being edjumakayshunal.
  2. Excellent, good idea! As for food and pig issues, see the thread in Off Topic for more info. If'n y'all dare, that is.
  3. The first point was kinda an attempt at humor. Yeah yeah, I stink. Bill & Tammy - Handicache in the title, I like it. Definitely put that one there. Miragee - I don't wanna get into the debate portion of quality - I think I might go with an opining on the right cache size for the right location, but not much beyond that. I love Auntie Weasels Notebook. Hadn't seen that one yet. EDIT: You DO have a lot of 'Views'
  4. Count me as another happy b&w Legend user. However, the new GPS receivers, particularly teh Garmin 'X' series (dunno about Magellan) have several nice features. Larger, color screens are nice, expandable memory is fantastic (more maps!), and teh SiRFIII chipset provides MUCH better satellite lock over earlier models. Additionally, many 'expensive' units have an electronic compass and an altimeter. The compass I could use, the altimeter not so much. Yeah, I want one of teh "x" units. Love my Legend, but love the extra suff, too.
  5. I have found a place for a small cache, that will be handicapped accessible (a real 1/1 P-n-G). The site itself is kinda neat, but I want teh cache page to be more. So I was thinking about making a cache... explaining caching. The idea is to make one for beginners to find, give them a little visual reward, and give them a sort of background "FAQ" to get their feet wet. Those already in the know could just stop and log it for the view, of course. Anyway, I need help. 1) Does that count as promoting an agenda? 2) What information would you say is absolutely important for inclusion on such a page? I already had teh decon box, and I swiped some magnets out of a hard drive - it works much better than I was expecting. All I need to do is secure permission. (No, a regular ammo box would not work at the location and maintain a 1/1, otherwise I would have done so. I like bigger!) Thanks for your input. EDIT: 3) I need a cleverer name, too. I stink at such things.
  6. Well, perhaps spray adhesive and actual dirt from the site? I have an ammo can hidden in stonework and I painted it with 'fleck' paint to match teh granite it is in. Perhaps there is something similar where you are? What color dirt are we talking about, here? Red, brown, sandy-white...?
  7. Wow, that is more accurate than a Magellan! I want one of those.
  8. What? So far the only comments have been from a moderator ('allowed'), and two (now 3, with me) people thinking that posting a thread in an open forum would be less effective than emailing them. Since it is Saturday evening, I don't expect an immediate response anyway, so this is kinda silly. Leaving it foment over the weekend and expecting only a limited group to respond? Snoogans, if I were you, I'd lock this until Monday, 7am Pacific time.
  9. That can work both ways. My ten year old is not above saying, "If you help me dress the kitties for their tea party, I'll go geocaching on Saturday." Dress the kitties? And humans wonder why cats are so stand-offish!
  10. Fixed it for ya Pretty much, I'm afraid. We do have the tourist traps, unfortunately. In a mild defense, much of teh eastern seaboard has lots of toll roads. Anyway, NH would not make a good GW location. Not only due to low-ish cache density, but because I can't think of a good place to gather hundreds of people in one place, what with camping and all. It could not be done at one site - you'd have to get dozens of sites spread across miles of backcountry roads.
  11. I can think of one instance where a second found log might be acceptable. A while ago I posted an SBA log on a cache as it was vandalized. Someone adopted it, moved it 20-50' & changed the cache container size, and allowed other people to re-log it, as it was something of a new experience. When I went back to the cache, I chose to 'note' log the second time, but that is just me, not a reflection on the cache. So anyway, all that to say, yeah I can see a case where it would not be unreasonable to log a cache more than once. I understand what you are getting that, and I don't disagree with the principle, just that it might not be the greatest option is all.
  12. Wow... took me a minute to realize that this was 2 years old. Happy Anniversary again Lep! I can't agree more with your original post.
  13. Here's another vote for CO. Anywhere but here, actually. Durned turrists. "Welcome to NH. Now go home!" <- State motto.
  14. I don't care about HOW they have typed in a forum message, so long as I understand it. I make misteaks all teh time. No worries. I'd rather judge the pst based on the idea they are trying to get across, rather than their ability to proofread like they were being watched by a newspaper editor. It's a forum, for crying out loud, not a spelling bee or grammer festival. If it relly bothers you that much, well... *edit - fixed
  15. Well, if writing on stuff isn't vandalism, I'm not sure teh rest of your post is worth reading, but I'll try. Um, so if someone doesn't know about teh vandalism, then finds out about later, they can't change their mind? Well, isn't that 'special'. Knowingly vandalizing a cntainer is a 'mistake'? What has any of that have to do with the vandalizing? Noone is calling him Hitler (that I am aware of). But they are saying he (and the team) was totally out of line, and so far, rather unrepetant about it. Heck, I think I'll pee in cache containers now, to mark my visit, rather than sign the log. Don't you try to dictate to me my game! So what if it ruins the container or compromises the cache?
  16. I am NOT a FTF fiend. In fact, unless there is some special reason, I go out of my way to NOT be FTF. I don't like competition in teh slightest. However, if someone makes a FTF bookmark on one of my cache pages, cool. I have no problem with it, so long as it is plain and simple (NO graphics). Yeah, it is gloating, IMO, and there are better uses for public bookmarks, IMO, but I really can't see a problem with it for me. If something is in error and I find it, I will ask teh bookmark owner to make an edit, but big deal. I say, if you like it, go for it.
  17. It's already been done. I didn't get a ballot! My opinions were not represented. Who is the president? I would like to correspond with him/her. Where are the bylaws because I would like to read them. Where are the "official" rules for verifing finds? I understand what is being said about community. I appreciate the concept as well as the existing, but it is still all about the cache owner and the cache finder and no one else. I have "real" problems with muggles destroying caches and cache finders not rehiding the cache properly and finding three initials written with a sharpie on my cammo'd ammo cans wouldn't bother me much. If another cache owner in the area expresses his feelings in a post about finding three initials on the outside of his cache, I'd relate to it but I wouldn't take up a flag and march around town shouting down with "container signers". The game is not threatened by this! Hiding caches without permission threatens the game! Destroying the environment threatens the game. Bad mouthing other geocaches threatens the game. Let the cache owners complain and everybody else just stand back and say, "I hear ya". Unless you are the cache owner, you have no voice. Unless of course you are like the media that you probably complain about, or just like to stir the pot see how riled up you can get people over something that happened to someone else. I am *A* cache owner, and I don't want to see this precedence (vandalizing the cache container) take hold and spread. I DO have a voice. Just because I am not *THE* cache owner doesn't exclude me from discussing the matter.
  18. lol, are you saying beating someone up is cool, but just don't brag about it on the internet or you might get caught? I've studied a bit to become a PI. I think it would be much more interesting to just post his address, phone number, photo, and employer online with a copy of his nasty email. No, not saying that at all... they will totally shut down the interweb for offhand remarks. ZoMg!1! in other news, the sky is falling. Eh, you were kinda funny up until that. I said Groundspeak could take heat, not the whole internet. And I didn't say Groundspeak would even lose IF there was a civil suit. What I am implying here is that Groundspeak is a listing service - they have better things to do than pay a lawyer (sorry Rothstafari!) & court costs for a lawsuit (no matter how dumb). Why give someone the legal leg-up by saying stupid crap like that? There is another thread here where someone said they would MACE someone. If saying you are gonna punch somebody (no matter how deserved), is it any better than saying you are gonna mace them? Cut them? Shoot them? What is teh difference? You are threatening bodily harm over a GAME. Threatening like that is about as childish as one can get. That places the threatener right where cachepolice is - in the sandbox at kindergartem. And if you wanna get it right, it isn't "ZoMG!1!", it's "OMBWTFBBQLOLZOXXORZ!!1111!" Go back to trolling school.
  19. But what if we're 100% serious and accurate not just exagerating how we feel? lol Scenario: Someone does just that: "Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law..." Threats posted here can very well bite you in the buttocks in a trial. And Groundspeak might take heat too, for hosting the threats, regardless of their position on the matter. Is cachepolice a jerk? Seems like it. Just don't dig your own grave, and one for Groundspeak too. /The above reflects my opinion, and as I am neither a lawyer, nor a Groundspeak Lackey, take it all with a grain of salt.
  20. I agree with codeman3. I have too much respect for the dead than to look at tombstones for the year someone died to find the next waypoint. Morbid is what it is. I put them on my 'ignore' list. I completely DISagree. I've done a number of cemetary caches (not a lot, but enough maybe 3 or 4) where you looked at headstones to determine coordinates. Many of the the headstones tell a story about the life and culture of the persons interred. For example, there were a number of headstones I saw while searching that were childrens graves from the 17 & 1800's*. I read those and thought of the hardships that founders of our country had to endure, diseases, war, etc. I frequently leave these caches with more respect and reverence than when I went in. Call it education if you want. You do not get a sense of history by driving by a place so fast you cannot read and understand what stories lay within. *At least in New England, you have graves that go back that far. In other places, maybe not so much, but still... There are stories - read them! It is your history, too!
  21. *smirk* I think my personal 'best' as far as finds go is 9. My FAVORITE best, is ONE DNF, if I recall right - can't remember any finds that time. That was a great day, had a wonderful time.
  22. Wait - a physical is allowed at the site, and you DON'T like that? WHy is that a problem?
  23. How? They don't show up on the maps so I can find them while planning caching along my route. And yes, there are some lame virts, but is that a reason to ban them all ? If so, why are caches still around, there are lot's of lame caches? I've always enjoyed the virts I've seen, especially while traveling. They teach more about the area I'm going thru than most caches. I'm glad they didn't archive them all when they were switched over to Waymarking. But I'm not asking that they be brought back, I know how much "trouble" they caused. Well, that is a valid point, I guess. Maybe Groundspeak could add Waymarks (as a user option) to the geocaching.com maps? It would be kinda nice to see them superimposed on each other. However, implementing something like that, with all the filters at Waymark (unless you want EVERY type of Waymark), seems like it might be really hard...
  24. I've done a virtual or two (not many, I admit), but how is Waymarking (where virtuals nw live) less effective than geocaching.com at providing that functionality?
