  1. Early on, Phil from PhilPamandRob set a series of challenges based on the images on the Merseyside Mega coin. The Merseyside Challenges are CXC15 http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/CXC15_NW_Mega_2012_Ferry_cross_the_Mersey ;CX15F8 http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/CX15F8_NW_Mega_2012_Royal_Liver_Building_Liverpool ; CX14D8 http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/CX14D8_NW_Mega_2012_Prince_Ruperts_Tower_Liverpool ; CX10DD http://www.geocaching.com/challenges/CX10DD_NW_Mega_2012_Fort_Perch_Rock_Wirral . Theres also CX2E6 - Pendle Hill for the Lancashire coin & CXDD6 - Ambleside House for the Cumbria coin. The others will be done......soon
  2. Probably too far for you but a great waterfall - Cautley Spout GC19PV2
  3. I think an event in the Midlands would be great. As far as I'm aware, there are no contenders for 2013 and one for 2014. If you do decide to go ahead with a Mega Midlands, be assured that the North West Mega Committee will give you lots of support. We have been fortunate to have had lots of help from the Scottish & Welsh committees and hope that we would be able to give the 2013 & 2014 committee's lots of support as well. By the way, if you do decide to go for Mega Midlands, you will join the ranks of the slightly deranged. Janw - NW England 2012 Mega Committee
  4. Enjoy the airshow.... there are some great caching opportunities around Southport as well. Have fun
  5. Geocoins & TB's need to keep moving. If you can move it on, then go retrieve it It will eventually get picked up by someone going back to the States so don't worry toooo much about that part of the mission, just don't drop it into an obscure fiendishly difficult multicache that is only visited once in a blue moon
  6. This is my 1st posting here.... I tend to lurk as I have family in SA & try and combine a bit of caching with visits to family. I am also the Secretary of the 2012 UK Mega Event Committee to be held at Cartmel Racecourse, Cumbria on Sat 11th August 2012 Firstly, the UK has a geocaching organisation similiar to the one proposed here, the Geocaching Association of Great Britian or GAGB My link. They promote Geocaching in the UK and negotiate landowner permissions with organisations such as the National Parks & the Forestry Commission. They do not get involved in organising Mega Events. The UK 2012 Mega Event to be held in Cartmel in the Lake District of the UK will be the fifth Mega Event organised in the UK. Mega2012 Our committee is made up of volunteers from the North West of England. We agreed a constitution between ourselves & set about fundraising for our event nearly two years ago. Our fundraising has taken the form of raffles at local events and the production & sale of lightweight trackables. The funds raised through that have allowed us to design and produce a series of NW Mega Event Coins, the proceeds from the sale of those will fund the event itself. They will be launched at Mega Wales this July Mega Wales 2011 The first Mega event held in the UK was organised in 6 months, done on a small budget & the committee only found out on the day of the event that they had covered all their costs. The UK events have grown each year and I'm sure the SA ones will but, you don't need a formal SA geocaching organisation to organise a Mega Event....... you need a committee of unsuspecting and uncomplaining enthusiasts (idiots  ) who are prepared to take the plunge. Any of the UK previous Mega committee Members would be happy to offer advice ( probably - Don't do it ) if you needed it Good luck & if you organise one..... I'm next over for a wedding early (UK) summer in the Jo'Burg/Pretoria area, so thats my prefered time frame & location
  7. Dependant on where you live in Cheshire, check the events page at Warrington CachersMy link
  8. Yes, they'll be available from the Mega2012 website after Mega Wales
  9. Have emailed the cacher who picked up the TB as I'm going to SA in November. Hope I can help
  10. Do you know where in the UK it is?? I'm coming over to Durban for a wedding in November so could bring it over with me. PM me with details & I'll try & get it sent through to me.
  11. Can't comment on your route to Liverpool but once there..... Yes, the city centre caches are micros, but they are usually in great places. Start at the Albert Dock and follow the list below for a circular route around the city centre; GC1ZJVN Albert Duck GC1X8Q5 Chinese Archway - the biggest outside China GC26ZY1 The Fill GC1TV20 Anyone for a hand of poker? GC1X8R5 Georges Hall GC15Q78 Superlambanana - the original, check out the others at the Pier Head GC1770W Turning the place over - great urban art installation GC16KWV Liverpool Musical Links GC1BHYN The Sailors Church GC1WYG0 Liverpool Pier Head GC2E4D Alberts Famine -Virtual GC248MO Salthouse Dock These do a circuit of the city centre, there are some caches in interesting locations just outside the centre as well that are walkable
  12. As Dan stated on the coin thread, it's looking increasingly likely that the NW & SE events will either be on the same date or consecutive weekends....not ideal for anyone. As the SE Event is to be themed around the Olympics, what about a date between the 12th August.... the close of the Olympics, and 29th August .... start of the Para Olympics? Should still be lots of visitors from abroad around then Just a suggestion
  13. So there are now two possible Mega Events in 2012 then The NW have been planning for the 2012 Mega to be held in the NW since last October. It will be interesting to see if Groundspeak award both events with Mega Status
  14. 10yrs Oxenholme (Kendal) Cumbria GC2609Q published (not technical.... don't know how to get it to link )
  15. Welcome to the madness Check out the NW Forums http://www.nwcaching.co.uk/forum/index.php You'll find a lot of info on caches around your area.
  16. If you check out the nwcaching forum here - http://www.nwcaching.co.uk/forum/viewtopic...?f=2&t=2497, you should get some ideas
  17. Check out your local forum http://www.nwcaching.co.uk/forum/ They have a 'lets go caching section'
  18. I'm not particularly interested in swaps, I enjoy the finding. Also, I tend to cache on my own. But....... having been caching with friends & family over the last few months I have noticed either the total lack of stuff in caches or the total tat that has been left. This got me thinking about what I have left in the past & I'm guilty of leaving tat & promotional freebies. After the last trip with a disappointed 6 yr old, I decided to stock my caching bag with some better types of Swaps - the type of stuff my mates kids would get a kick out of finding. The supermarkets & pound shops sell party favours, packs of plastic toys, dinasours etc. For a tenner I stocked up & a lot of stuff could be split down as well. For 99p I got a tub of 15 mini highlighter pens, they split into 5 packs of 3, large bags of marbles split into half bags, etc etc. Yes I live in a city & I have access to lots of discount shops & all the top supermarket chains which makes a difference. I now carry a bag of swaps with me & I've even emptied damaged & broken tat & fully restocked the container. That said, I appreciate that its younger children who particulary enjoy this element so I tend to add/restock caches that are buggy accessible or don't involve a long hike up & down hills & fells. I think some caches lend themselves to holding decent swaps & some don't. Some people enjoy finding swaps, some aren't bothered...... I think cache containers & contents reflect this
  19. You don't need to be a premium member to get a stats bbar.... you need someone to write a script that will display your stats for you. I've got one on my forum signature for my local forum here in the UK. I got it before I upgraded to premium membership. It was written by one of the forum users and updates my stats from GC within 48 hrs
  20. Yet another of the '200' who used this feature regularly To paraphrase a previous poster - The kml feature is an easy way for the non techicnal savy people like me to locate caches in an area or on different routes ...and take notes on the ones I like & devise a specific route. I'm a non technical person too. People are making reference to GE & GPX files, dragging them across, overlays etc - you might as well be talking a foreign language to me, I have no idea what that means & how it will benefit me. And, I'm not averse to trying out something new, but I only have basic IT knowledge, and limited opportunities to develop it to the level where I can understand & work through alternative processes. I also find the Groundspeak maps slow to load & I struggle to get them to the specific locations I want to view
  21. I do think it's a mistake to remove the google earth KLM facility. I used to use it a lot to give me an overview of the area I wanted to visit. It would give me an idea of where the caches where in relation to each other. Having read the forum regarding this, there's lots of suggestions regarding replacing this facility & using other applications. Thats great if you understand what you're doing, but when you are as technically illiterate as I am, its no help!! I dont even know how I managed to get the KLM facility onto my Google Earth maps so asking me to try & get something new to work is asking a lot I have to say the figure of 200 users surprises me, I certainly know of aprox 20 cachers in the uk who use it & thats just in my small geocaching social circle. I suspect that if this was properly researched, the number of users would turn out to be substantially higher.
  22. Given that the location you want to use is run by a non profit making (presumably a charity), why not PM a local reviewer & ask their advice? Alba, Deciengi & Graculus are the UK reviewers & I'm sure they'd be able to advise you about the detail of what you want to do. Good Luck & i like the idea of a decent sized cache instead of a micro!!
  23. From my current location in North Liverpool I have 500+ within 15.2 miles - The Irish Sea is a bit of a cache desert though From my (other) home in Brough, Cumbria, there are 500+ within 20.2 miles, there have been a lot of new caches hidden in the Yorkshire Dales recently which helps.
