  1. I cant get my GPSr and Mac to communicate. It's driving me bonkers! Here's what I'm using: eTrex Legend IOGear USB to serial adapter OSX 10.2.8 Mac Simple GPS X or Terrabrowser The light on the adapter blinks like there is data being sent. But, Mac Simple GPS either cant see the GPS, or locks up, and Terrabrowser cant see the GPS. After installing the adapter software both give the option of "usb serial adater" in the port selection menu, but neither will see the unit. Do I need to change the protocol, or is the default Garmin fine? As this has been discussed somewhat before, I know there are others running this setup successfully. TIA for your help!
  2. I'm running OSX and have VPC 6.0 installed. However, I got this from a friend and it didnt come with an operating system. I do have a windoze 98 disk from an earlier version of VPC I have. Can I load 98 into VPC 6 and be able to upload/download to my GPSr? Does windoze 98 via VPC have USB capabilities? I'm using an IOGear usb/serial adapter. Is there anyone running this setup, or has anyone run it in the past?
  3. I'd have to agree. Looks like a rebadged ifinder. Ho-Humm

  6. Looking at a Belkin USB to serial adapter because they are plentiful and cheap on eBay. I want some thing that works, however, and am wondering if anyone has experience using one of these with OSX, virtual PC, Garmin software, etc. Thanks
  7. Is anyone using the Belkin USB to serial adapter along with osX on their Mac? I'm temped to get a Belkin adapter because they are so plentiful and cheap on eBay. First and foremost though, I want an adapter that works. Anybody have experience with these? Thanks!
  8. Wow, you VW people are as bad as us Jeep people. Praise 'em one minute and curse 'em the next, eh? I've been looking at getting a Jetta TDi for a while now. 97 or 98 seems to be the year that fits me the best. Any pointers, tips, etc? Best place for parts, etc? Tips on working on the TDi? Good VW forums? Any specific to the TDi?

We know what the plants are and if someone in our crew sees it we wipe. No way to know forsure if it works, but when we first starting caching, I was getting poison ivy everytime, haven't had it since I wipe with wipes. I think the babywipe is just a placebo. They have a soap out called Tecnu that is supposed to work well if you use it as soon after exposure as possible. Firefighters in our area use it, but not always succesfully. Working for a few years at a Nature Center Daycamp we had daily run ins with poison ivy. Another soap that works just as good as the Tecnu (brown stuff, right?) is good ole Ivory bar soap. Use it ASAP and it neutralizes the oils.
  10. Hey! More Jeepers! I belong to a club in Kalamazoo. We've talked about a "Jeep-o-cache" run a couple of times. Nov. 1st, there is one that has been set up by some guys on michiganjeepers.com Basically, we are meeting at a starting point, coordinates are given and we have to navigate from one waypoint to another and so on. Kind of a multi stage run. The run is going to end with burgers, beer and bonfire. Check out michiganjeepers.com and go to the trailride section.
  11. Having a lifted, highly modified Jeep (82 CJ7) and belonging to a 4x4 club, I've had my fair share of stucks. Some of these have happened miles out with no way to get any kind of tow truck or even another, larger vehicle out there to rescue me. I've got 3 suggestions: 1. Carry a hi-lift jack. Also known as a farmer jack. Along with a chain and a tow strap, this can winch, jack or pull you out from anything you can get stuck in on or under. 2. Never venture offroad alone. A night stuck in the middle of nowhere could have been solved with a simple tug from a second vehicle. 3. If you venture far offroad, be prepared to spend the night. Blanket, food, water, etc. I've been on trails where it's taken 3-4 hours to progress 100 yards.
  12. I'd like to get one of these to start uploading/downloading data. Let me know what you want for it (better price than eBay or new) if you've got an extra. Thanks!

Try http://www.threadworksunlimited.com/gps/index.shtml ~robert _Notice: Driver carries less than $20 cache._ http://www.mdgps.net Thanks! Downloading it now. Look like it's just what I'm looking for. This will only read .gpx, right?
  14. quote:Originally posted by JeremyA:You are correct - GPSConnect cannot open .loc files. What you need is a .gpx file. There are two ways to get a .gpx file, the easiest is to sign up with Groundspeak as a premium member and use the pocket queries. Alternatively, if you are savvy with the terminal you can download GPSbabel which will convert .loc files into .gpx files. I wrote myself an applescript droplet to access GPSbabel so that I can convert .loc into .gpx by just dropping the .loc file onto the droplet icon. Jeremy So, my Garmin can only read .gpx files? Why then the option to download .loc files? Is it just that the mac software can only read .gpx? Or do all GPSr's read .gpx only? Thanks for the info!
  15. I'm new to all this so go slow. I've already downloaded a .loc file to my desktop. I'm using GPSConnect to transfer data. Dont have a serial/USB cable yet, so I'm just practicing. Either trying "open" or "import waypoints" within GPSConnect, it doesnt see the .loc file. Is there something I need to do to the file? Am I downloading the right file? I'm confused????
  16. Glad to see I'm not the only one running a Mac with a GPS. My new Legend should be waiting for me when I get home tonight, ready to start caching! I have VPC 6 loaded on my G4 DP at work and on my iMac at home. Any chance windows 98 will work? I've got a copy of that and would rather use that than try to get ahold of a copy of XP, that is if 98 will work fine for Garmins software. So, let me get this straight. Using GPSConnect and Terrabrowser, I can upload/download waypoints, backup my GPS info, basically manage my GPS from OSX. The only think I will need VPC and the Garmin software for is for map downloading. CORRECT? FWIW: I manage a small(7) ALL MAC network. I'm not much of a tech guy, but since it runs so smoothly, there's not much tech maintenance to do! [This message was edited by Ric Wiessner on September 11, 2003 at 11:07 AM.]
