  1. I have a cache about 8 feet underwater using a Nalgene bottle. It's not available during the winter, though, the dock it's hanging off of get's pulled out of the water then, so I can't tell you how well it holds up. It's held up very well during the other seasons, though.
  2. I have 2 hides, with a total cost of about $100. I don't go for simple small urban throwdowns, I try to make something special.
  3. Yes, pill bottles are allowed to be used as a container. I'd recommend taking the label off. And I've also heard they make lousy containers, as they aren't weathertight enough to really hold up outdoors.
  4. Generally speaking, no, not really. I've never paid much attention to the dates, and even then, I usually only notice it when I'm logging the find. I'll check the dates of the last finds in the logs as I want to make sure it's still there when I look for it, but the hidden/placed date really doesn't come into play for me.
  5. They may not be getting sick of them, but once it's been found right away, the FTF Hounds move on, and that's why the large gap. When it's first placed, it shouws up on everyone New Hides query, but after a week it falls off that and gets lost in the mix. I have a lampost in the woods that was found several times in the first week, but hasn't been found since then, about a month and a half ago. It's just the way the game goes.
  6. Well, if someone is looking for the older caches, that wrong date will mess up their search, but besides that, I can't think of any bad side-effects.
  7. Never had that happen to me, but I only have 2 hides, so remembering where they are is easy! That would have been pretty funny if you'd have had to log a DNF on your own hide, though!
  8. It's Not About The Numbers www.itsnotaboutthenumbers.com
  9. I've had 2 handheld, one with an electronic compass (DeLorme PN-40), and one without (Legend HCx). I was able to find caches fine without it, but I think the electrnic compass makes it a touch easier since the pointer is always pointing at the cache instead of only when you're moving. Not needed, but very nice to have.
  10. Search for "rolleyes image macro". You should find a dozen variations of a giant rolleyes emote spewing hundreds of smaller rolleyes emotes. That's how I feel about the internet sometimes. (...but keep your paws off my twitter. It updates to my FaceBook account.) I can't [easily] put a smiley rolling his eyes on a T-shirt. I could just point his balls up and it would get the point across. Print the smiley on a shirt and add some googly eyes, problem solved!
  11. There's an app for that for the iPhone. Actually, and app for everything mentioned in here. Golf yardage measurements, golf course finders, and geocaching, of course.
  12. Just ignore them. I don't think the 800,000+ active caches have much to worry about from the 30 members of that group.
  13. The deal is that nobody is forcing you to do multis. So if all you want is Smileys, then ignore multis. If you just want to have fun, then do them. Why does it matter?
  14. 2, then 1, then 3. I went a did an all-day cache run a month or so ago, but instead of doing it in town and getting tons of micros, I went out into the woods, and only got 14 finds. But had tons of fun being out there in the middle of nowhere looking for something, while looking for a micro near a bus stop hold no appeal to me. I like getting smileys, but that doesn't consume me.
  15. But are you going to do anything during that week? If you don't move your cache, and the other cache isn't archived, then don't expect things to magically change. There are guidlines to follow when hiding a cache, and if you don't follow the guidelines, you can't expect the reviewer to make an exception just for you and nobody else. Just move your cache about 90 feet, update the coordinates, and see what happens. Or do nothing, wait a week, then come back in here ranting about the reviewer not activating your cache.
  16. What is it then?? Statistically insignificant data. Insignifigant to us, maybe, but some people will throw a fit if they lose a single smiley, so 100 Finds on their own hides would be signifigant to them. I still say it's padding thier find stats, no matter how small a percentage, but like I ALSO said, I don't really care, they can play however they want. And some of those people with 1000's of finds, stat padding is how they got that many finds in the first place. I know the vast majority have gone out and found caches that weren't theirs and signed the logs, but there are people out there who are fixated on getting as many finds as possible, no matter how it's done, and you can deny that this happens all you want, but you know it's true. But, once again, I don't care, it doesn't affect me one way or the other.
  17. If you unchecked the "Is Active" box, then he won't even see it to do anything with.
  18. It's a kind of shady thing I've heard about, kind of a way of padding your find numbers. I don't think there's a rule specifically against it, but I'm with you, I don't see that as a "Find" because they didn't actually find anything. But wutaryugonnado, can't control what other people are going to do, so no use in worrying about it.
  19. I Think they do it as a team, so there's always someone on the way to the next cache, or something like that. Kinda cheaty to me, but what do I care, there's no score, people can claim whatever they want, I just play for my own enjoyment.
  20. DeLorme Earthmate PN-20, -30, or -40. Garmin Oregon. Those are the most popular units that can do the paperless caching. I have a DeLorme PN-40 and I love it.
  21. Look at the DeLorme PN-20, it meets all your criteria right out of the box.
  22. Having the Topo map CD is nice, and it's a decent package price, but that is an older unit that has the old lower-resolution GPS receiver and uses a serial cable to connect to your computer. So if you you don't have a serial port on your computer, you'll need a serial/USB converter cable. And then if you take that unit out, you won't get great accuracy, and they have problems under trees. So it's not a bad deal or unit, but I'd keep looking for something Garmin eTrex with an "H" in the model name, like the Summit HC, Legend HCx, Vista HCx, or even just the eTrex H. The H is for the high-sensitivity GPS receiver, a very nice thing to have.
