  1. FWIW, I'll tell you how I use GSAK and the PQ system. I have regular GPX deliveries for found and unfound caches in my area coming weekly, and then more frequently for new and watched caches. When I am planning a trip, I start getting weekly GPX files for the area(s) in question. This is so that I can start preparing for the trip. I start marking caches which look like they are in the right location using GSAK userdata. Right before the trip I get updated GPX files, but the old logs are there in GSAK, so that when I am on the trip, I do have the full history of the cache. This is going to be important going to Orlando in the wake of Hurricane Charley. I usually set the number of caches to 500 just because I don't know the geography yet, and then I can fine tune it later. This was especially useful on my trip to England in July, as I had PQs centered on Cambridge, Waddesdon and London, and 500 caches out from Cambridge didn't really reach too far into Hampshire, but the London query gave me a bunch in Hampshire where we were for a few days. This environment is so dense that in the span of two weeks of short day trips we covered a bunch of different caching areas, but in a relatively small area. The current system for PQ doesn't really allow a lot of interactivity in terms of defining areas geographically according to a trip. Since I rely on GSAK to do that and there is no real integration as to GC.COM know which caches GSAK knows I'm filtering on, much info in the PQs is being wasted. I'd have thought that there are a number of ways to improve this process, but I do find that having the past logs is important - especially for very chatty logs on difficult local caches with a lot of no finds and notes.
  2. No joy, I restarted the DNS, I tried a laptop in the DMZ, and nothing - same errors or no errors, just waiting for the browser to get a response. I don't have time or desire to do packet tracing today to see why the form posts aren't working - I get enough of this during the week. My whole department will be over tomorrow for a baby shower (two of my programmers are pregnant and due within weeks of each other!), if it still isn't working, perhaps that can be one of the games for my peeps. Who will win, the netadmins or the programmers, external tech support or internal tech support?
  3. Same problem from server in the basement when attempting to remove cache from my watchlist - eventually I get Cannot find server or DNS Error. Also can't post a log, either. And my stats page from my profile isn't coming up either down here - can't tell why it might be bailing out on DNS, though because it isn't a simple HREF - it's an ASP.NET postback. I have my own DNS running, but you'd think the DNS wouldn't be changing. I will restart the DNS server completely. I will research some more from a computer in the DMZ - could also be a net problem with upstream DNS (at BellSouth) or routing.
  4. Definitely getting emails from caches on my watch list. Deleted cookies, temporary Internet files, flushed DNS and rebooted. No joy (and no error - luckily I've typed all my logs in GSAK, so I just have to paster). I'm going to try from the basement on my server.
  5. I'm about to reboot the computer, because I keep getting emails from items on my watch list - so I know people ARE logging, but I just tried again and after several minutes got the old server not found. I can understand this if there are Round Robin DNS issues or whatever, but I'm also seeing no response attempting to look at my profile, either - so it seems to be more than just one page. Well, I'm back off to ipconfig /flushdns and a reboot and we'll see how it goes.
  6. Can't remove items from my watchlist this afternoon. Can't post logs. No meaningful error messages - one on the removing items, after clicking yes to confirm, it eventually came back with a 400 Badly formed request. On one of the logs, eventually came back cannot find server (but no connection problems or DNS weirdness here, and the site was accessible in other browse windows which I was using to line up other logs to get ready to post). TIA, Cade
  7. Automating GSAK: I know this has come up in the past. I've recently modified my batch file which I use to unzip my GPX files to call GSAK automatically using start WHERE .GPX FILES MUST BE ASSIGNED TO GSAK. What I've found is that the /wait option only needs to wait until the command line is handled, so this will launch GSAK if it isn't running, but in subsequent start invocations, the existing GSAK instance is used! This batch file requires: wzunzip - the WinZip unzip command line utility (or change it to your preferred version) .GPX files to be assigned to GSAK (which must be installed) My automation batch file (called geoprep.bat in the same directory where I drop my zip files): :begin if not exist 31327.zip goto next1 del 31327*.gpx wzunzip 31327.zip start 31327.gpx /wait ren 31327.gpx "31327 - Unfound.gpx" del 31327.zip :next1 if not exist 40314.zip goto next2 del 40314*.gpx wzunzip 40314.zip start 40314.gpx /wait ren 40314.gpx "40314 - Watched Caches.gpx" del 40314.zip :next2 if not exist 40315.zip goto next3 del 40315*.gpx wzunzip 40315.zip start 40315.gpx /wait ren 40315.gpx "40315 - New Caches.gpx" del 40315.zip :next3 if not exist 40940.zip goto next4 del 40940*.gpx wzunzip 40940.zip start 40940.gpx /wait ren 40940.gpx "40940 - Found Caches.gpx" del 40940.zip :next4 if not exist 66973.zip goto end del 66973*.gpx wzunzip 66973.zip start 66973.gpx /wait ren 66973.gpx "66973 - Hawaii.gpx" del 66973.zip :end Enjoy, Cade
  8. New Question: Anyone here using GSAK for keeping track of new caches you are making? Right now, I use Mapopolis with my iPaq and sleeve, making it a very convenient package for caching. I go GPX->GSAK->GPX->Maplet. Mapopolis lets you save new locations in your maplets, but they have to be manually entered back into GSAK, and they get lost when you overwrite your maplet with new files from GSAK/GPXToMaplet. I've been making a few new caches (the first is a multi-cache), and I enter the new cache with my own waypoint ID and then make up similar ones for the legs of the cache. I think it would be nice to either have multiple waypoints assigned to a single cache, or to be able to chain waypoints together - right now, I'm using UserData. I was curious as to what other people are doing to make this easier? I know with a traditional GPS, you can use the Receive Waypoints feature, but I don't have a regular GPS.
  9. I think it's certainly a good question to ask - "What are the most watched caches in this area?" I usually watch only caches I haven't found, so clearly I don't think this is a good way to do a popularity or recommendation ratings (although searching for the most watched cache is still a valid question, it's just that the answer is not the same as what is the most popular cache, or what is the cache gc.com thinks I would most like in this area). Off-topic, there are a lot of systems out there which could work for popularity measures or recommendations. There's the Zagat style rating system?: Food, Decor, Service. You rate each on a scale from 0 to 3. The final restaurant rating is on a scale of 0 to 30 and I believe is the average of all three, but you can get top lists just based on food, etc. Cache categories could be some of things like: Fun, Difficulty, Originality, Location, View, etc. For a Zagat-style rating, I doubt you'd want to include difficulty in the factor that make a cache the "top cache", since people may not want that to factor into what they like about caches. A Netflix-style recommendation system would also be a possibility, where you simply give a single rating to the cache. Then a correlation is done to show caches with high ratings by people who liked the same caches as you. Interesting in a different way. Because caches are geographically separate, this may not be useful, because when planning a trip, it would only be able to recommend caches which people who had hit the same caches as you also liked - but that's only able to pull from the people who have hit the same caches as you have and have hit caches in the area you are planning to visit. And then there's a decision whether to descend the recommendation tree (how many?) levels to gather a bigger population.
  10. I started using Watcher recently, but I've found GSAK to be very useful, particularly as GPX files can be automatically opened and merged, and on the last few runs I've made, it is running on the passenger seat. I use the user flag to plan routes to hit caches in bunches. Right now, I select all the ones I plan to hit on Saturday and export a GPX for Saturday (for the PocketPC, with Mapopolis Maplet), then unselect all those and select the ones I plan to hit on Sunday and export a GPX for Sunday. Then I go back and select all for Saturday and Sunday, so my "hitlist" filter will show all. Then I drive around and hit the caches, making user notes when I find them. I think a routing tool would be useful, where you can assign caches to a group, like Sat or Sun, so you can plan trips. I can see where this would be useful for trip planning further out, as it would be nice not to have to go back and re-select all the caches for a trip coming up, they would just stay in a group called "March Trip", and then if any more popped up in that area you could easily add them. As I am still several months from clearing out all of New Orleans, this will not be as important until then, when I will have to be planning several longer runs if I am to maintain my addiction. Having mentioned Mapopolis, I would also vote for integration with the GPXToMaplet tool. I really like Mapopolis so far.
