  1. hey Sparks, I had a bit of a similar problem. I wanted to place a cache in a really neat location but when I sent it off for approval, I found out that I was 28 feet TOO close for my approver's liking. Fortunately, instead of archiving my requests , He held it in the queue until I could find a location that did not infringe on that other cache's "space". ( I also found out that I was only 200 ft +/- from yet another cache). I learned that it is best to shoot my coords, then check the coords with a cache search to show all the closest caches to those coordinates THEN submit for approval. Don't trust your own sense of distance... it will seldom be correct. oh, yeah BTW KYAdmin, Keep up the good work
  2. Yeah, i am good at red herrings myself... it helps to take advantage of the " where would I hide a cache" technique. Place the decoy in the most likely location near those coords. tee hee... My latest does have a huge red herring... a 30 ft sign with all sorts of electrical boxes and other nooks and crannies. While the actual cache is several feet away. "I KNOW the GPSr zeros out over there, but it MUST be wrong!"
  3. IMESHO--so long as it's top is above ground, and you do not have to dig to access the cache, then it is fair, forest litter or fallen leaves and/or snow not withstanding
  4. hmmmm...okay then has been 4 days so far ..was two days before weekend... I thiunk I can hold out till Monday;)
  5. How long should one wait for a new listing to be approved before one has to start reminding the approvers of it's being in the queue?
  6. recently ( I believe it was June) one of the better cachies in my area, Pratum, It is assumed that it was pirated by one of a group of teenage boys that play paintball in the park where the cache is located. they left everything behind and took the ammo canb. Hmmm...what some peolpe consider of value, huh?
  7. I know Quid's question has been well and long in replies. I just want to throw in my advice... Buy the best you can afford. My old maggie 310 doesnt have any maping features, does not have d-load capabilities, doesnt have a magnetic compas and is limited to a two decimal Lat/Lon precision HOWEVER I got it for $88USD NEW at walmart..along with my first set of batteries and sales tax..total was an even $100USD. Sure, if you can afford a $650 GPSR that does everything byt sign the log for ya, go for it Be nice if I could
  8. I am showing 0 new messages ... am I doing something wrong or do I have to reformat my C: drive AGAIN!
  9. Oh and lots of dark colored clothing
  10. Oh I could not pass this thread up.... Night caching, especially in parks ... well, I would have to say that it all depends on how the locals in your area/area of the park respond to night 'guests'. the local parks authority where I reside USED to have folks who went to all the parks and shut both closed AND locked the gates. Now with well over 100 park properties and a police department that has far better things to do than patrol parks and arrest folks for being there at night, that policy is faily much ignored. NOW the caveat is this, if you don't make a ruckus and don't do anything to get the neighbors (if any) to take notice, then there is a very good chance you will not get in trouble with it . Not that I would condone such a thing Oh and a word of caution... if you are caching at night and it looks like you will be in a wooded area MARK THAT JEEP! I once got turned about caching near the Nashville Int'l airport and found myself lost about 50 feet from the road. Happy I didnt panic
  11. Fly 486.. I was just going by what was posted at the where's george forums AND the link in the WG.com FAQ's concerning defacing currency. But since those regulations do not specifically include writing or stamping bills with the Where's george URL, then I stand corrected.
  12. even if the paint weathered away, the embossing would still be there. I considered using the pet tags route however I am a cash (not cache) poor cacher and aim for price points of $0 or less
  13. Well, not so much hypocritical as so much as oxymoronic
  14. seeing as the stage in question is the FIRST stage of the multi, I would most probably do both, post the change AND tag the old location with the new one... at least for a month or so... IMESHO, anyone who doesnt update their queries a min of once a month should oughta go through the extra work
  15. listen to all of ya, trying to go all fancy and high tech... take an aluminum soda can.. cut the ends off, cut into strips. emboss the coords on it with a pencil or such attatch with whatever you would care to attatch it with. If you want the coords to have a bit more contrast Use a modeling paint pen to fill in the numbers
  16. I'll probably suffer the wrath fo GC.com BUT Keenpeople is a good source for stats... I do not know about downloading them and they do not have EVERY cacher's stats by a long shot. Each 'member' has to take care of their own stats tracking ,so I am sure there are a few cheaters. navicache and GPSgames and 'personal' caches are also reconized
  17. Oh! and let us not forget the seldom used but thanks for listing this format as well.. UTM!! Maptools.com using UTM Intrinsically precise to one meter (3ft 3inches) provided sats are not feeling'puckish'. Most newer units with 3 digit accuracy are typically precises to only just over 5 feet ( .001 deg = abt 5.28 feet) older units ,IE my trusty magellen 310, only carry two digit accuracy(no 1/100ths Min) reducing their precision to 52 FEET! When I carry a copy of the cache coords and use the navigation mode to allow me to 'match' coords, i can often find myself standing on top the cache. this is , provided of course, the original coords were accurate to begin with
  18. welcoime Welcom Welcom , Buffalow! Nad likewise very very important DEET! Prefferably a one gallon sizze with 2 inch applicator brush
  19. Yep legit trade items... just log them in at www.where'sgeorge.com and move them one. and try to remember, Where's george bills are tp be traded and not 'released into the wild', even though many folks do so.
  20. If I see somone poking about a cache site, I simply ask, "have you found it yet??' If they ask me, "Found what?" or look at me like I have lost my mind, then I simply go on. Otherwise, I introduce myself, give them a tip, if they want it, find a place to sit and wait till they have found the cache. Oh, and holding up your unit ( gpsr that is ) is a pretty well universal caching ID/handshake...
  21. to best of my knowledge, Grounspeak.com store caries "geo-rocks" that may be just the thing. They come in three colors. limestone, sandstone and granite. Only come in a size suitible for micro
  22. Could be a sort of dont ask dont tell thing. If an authority doesnt know prescicly where it is at, how would they know? not that I would advocate such a thing
  23. Now kosarin, you already know the answer to that... MORE THAN ONE THINKS! And if a tree falls on a cacher in the woods and know one else is around . . . would it count as a no find?
  24. Then on top of any initial iinaccuracies of a caches coords, you have to also add in the fact that the cache hunter's GPSr may also have the same amount of (in)accuracy. If your coords are good to witn ,say, 5 meters and the cacher's is off by 5 meters as well, then it is probable that that cacher can be up to 10 meterrs ( abt 15-20 feet) off. I have learned to be very very retentive about my coords... I shoot 20 different readings and average them out . I also like to use UTM coordinats then convert them over . Partially becaue my ancient Magellan 310 only has 2 decimal accuracy using Lat Long... and because I know it will be precise to within 1 meter/yard. my advice is to take different readings ( at different days if you like) average them out then go back and check them at leat once more. Yep... is aggraviting to go looking for a vcahce for well over an hour ( and a 2/2 at that) to discover that the original coords were 20 to 30 feet offf to begin with also a good idea to use a service such as topozone.com to double check the location with nearby landmarks ( streets, roads, streams...) You have bitten of a pretty big bite with making your first cache a multi team bah Humbug. best of luck
